Dear all Mark Carrigan and I are organising a workshop on the future of LLMs in Manchester on July 7th. The title is almost self-explanatory: 'Waiting for the Crash – Sketching the Enshittified Future of Large Language Models’. The idea is to invite colleagues, at any stage in their career, to come up with speculative case studies on how LLMs will transform vis-à-vis expectations of the AI bubble bursting and emerging monetization strategies. Dear colleagues, Media, Technology & Governance invites submissions for a special issue titled “Algorithmic Accountability and Ethics—Bias and Fairness in Algorithms.” Abstract submissions are due May 1, 2026. Media, Technology & Governance is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to critical inquiry into the regulatory, ethical, and societal implications of emerging communication technologies. The journal centers on pivotal innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, algorithm-driven decision-making, and other information and communication technologies (ICTs). *** Last Call for Journal First Papers *** International Conference on Software and Systems Reuse, Product Lines, and Configuration (VARIABILITY 2026) 29 September - 2 October 2026, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina Limassol, Cyprus https://conf.researchr.org/home/variability-2026 The VARIABILITY conference series brings together the communities previously served by ICSR, SPLC, and VaMoS, forming a unified venue for research on variability, configuration, customization, and related disciplines in software and systems engineering. VARIABILITY 2026 invites Journal-First presentations of papers recently published in leading software engineering journals, including TSE, TOSEM, IST, EMSE, JSS, ASEJ, SoSyM, and reputable open-access journals. This initiative provides authors with the opportunity to engage directly with the VARIABILITY community, while offering attendees a richer and more diverse program. The Journal-First papers remain published in their respective journals, and a one-page summary will be included in the VARIABILITY 2026 proceedings with a pointer to the original publication. Scope To qualify for a Journal-First presentation at VARIABILITY 2026, a paper must meet these criteria: • It was published on the publisher’s website between May 2024 and March 2026. • It fits within the scope of VARIABILITY 2026, as described in the research track call (https://conf.researchr.org/track/variability-2026/variability-2026-papers#C…) and can bring new insights or directions to the community. • It presents new research results or significant extensions of prior work that have not been presented at SPLC, VaMoS, or ICSR before. • It has not been presented at, and is not under review for, Journal-First Tracks of other related conferences. How to Submit Authors of papers that meet the above criteria are invited to submit a short proposal for presentation. Three postdoc positions open

Dear colleagues, I am delighted to share the news that we have opened three postdoc research positions within the framework of the ERC Starting Grant project DIGIWEB - The effects of artificial intelligence on migrants' access to welfare. Two posts are for ethnographers / social scientists (one conducting fieldwork in the Netherlands and the other in Sweden). One post is for a data scientist / critical STS researcher. DIGIWEB is a 5-year interdisciplinary project examining how artificial intelligence (specifically predictive analytics) is transforming the relationship between welfare systems and migration governance. As governments increasingly use AI to make decisions about welfare eligibility and fraud detection, these technologies are reshaping how migrants access social rights and services and may create new forms of 'digital borders' within welfare states. The project combines data science and social science approaches to investigate how welfare algorithms function, how they are implemented by street-level bureaucrats such as social workers, and how they impact migrants' experiences of welfare systems. The research involves comparative work across the UK, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The posts will be based in the research team of Prof Rachel Humphris (PI) within the School for Society and Environment at Queen Mary University of London. The data scientist will have a joint appointment with the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering with Dr Dimitrios Kollias. We'll be joined by editors Tugce Bidav and Smith Mehta, as well as several of the contributing authors, to talk about creators cultures and economies around the world. Rather than placing creator cultures in the Global South against those in the Global North to produce a series of binaries, it prioritises expanding our frames of reference for studying creator labour. It does so by examining creator cultures in India, Turkey, Brazil, Chile, Pakistan, Nigeria, Hong Kong, and China through approaches from media, communication, and cultural studies, as well as internet, platform, and creator studies. ****************************************************** 1st INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ON THE COGNITIVE, ETHICAL AND SOCIETAL DIMENSIONS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AIces 2026 Porto – Maia, Portugal March 30 – April 2, 2026 https://aices.irdta.eu/2026/ ****************************************************** Co-organized by: University of Maia Institute for Research Development, Training and Advice – IRDTA Luxembourg/London ****************************************************** Regular registration: March 27, 2026 ****************************************************** SCOPE: AIces 2026 will be the first in a series of research training events aiming at updating participants on the most recent multidisciplinary discussions about the foundations, meaning, challenges and risks of AI. The event will have a global scope along 3 thematic lines: cognition, ethics, and society. It will cover current debates about: AI and philosophy of mind; cognitive architectures; machine learning and cognitive development; large language models and visual information; robotics and embodied cognition; neuroscience-inspired AI; algorithmic bias and fairness; transparency and explainability; accountability and responsibility; privacy and surveillance; autonomy and control; AI impact on human values and social inequalities; the future of work and automation; governance, regulation and public policies; AI, human rights and democracy; AI and global development; information and AI education. The event will consist of 10 courses, 2 keynote lectures, 3 symposia collecting short contributions from participants, and 2 individual presentations on debated topics. Renowned academics and industry pioneers will lecture and share their views with the audience. The organizers are convinced that outstanding speakers will attract the brightest and most motivated students. Face to face interaction and networking will be main ingredients of the event. It will be also possible to fully participate in vivo remotely. ADDRESSED TO: Graduate students, postgraduate students and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of participants. However, there are no formal pre-requisites for attendance in terms of academic degrees, so people less or more advanced in their career will be welcome as well. Since there will be a variety of levels, specific knowledge background may be assumed for some of the courses. Overall, AIces 2026 is addressed to students, researchers and practitioners who want to keep themselves updated about recent developments and future trends. All will surely find it fruitful to listen to and discuss with major researchers, industry leaders and innovators. VENUE: AIces 2026 will take place in Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, recognized by UNESCO in 1996 as a World Heritage Site.
