Dear colleagues, may we draw you attention to the following CfP? The Semiotics of Celebrity Fallouts: Questioning Power, Morality, and Fame Special Issue Social Semiotics Guest editors: Simone Driessen (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Gaëlle Ouvrein (Free University Brussels), and Eve Ng (Ohio University) The past years have illustrated how cancel culture has emerged as prominent socio-cultural, and even political phenomena. More so, the rise of these phenomena has challenged traditional notions of fame and celebrity, but also of accountability, power relations, and societal values. Think about how the #MeToo-movement and particularly the allegations against Harvey Weinstein shocked Hollywood, how certain celebrities, like Ellen DeGeneres or Kevin Spacey, have fallen of their (symbolic) pedestals, but also how the trial-by-media led to fans and media still putting Johnny Depp in a more favorable position than Amber Heard. In all these cases of celebrity bashing or allegations against celebrities, issues like (gender) inequality, power relations, but also morality play a role. And precisely these issues are foundational in and to many cases we would consider core examples of cancel culture or celebrity bashing. This Special Issue delves deeper into the complex dynamics of cancel culture, like the practice of celebrity bashing or boycotting stars from the public debate, by exploring and critically examining these phenomena, their implications and consequences from different perspectives (e.g, media-psychological, legal, commercial, etc.) and from a multi-disciplinary approach. Is it, in today's world and creative industries, necessary to revise how we consider or think of cancel culture? Should we view celebrity bashing in a trend of celebrity in crisis, or as an effect of increased (and continuous) para-social relationships not living up to expectations? In this Special Issue for Social Semiotics we invite researchers to explore the roots of cancel culture and celebrity bashing, its mechanisms and consequences, as well as contributions investigating the role of (social) media fueling or mitigating these phenomena. Furthermore, this Issue aims to look at the ethical and moral dimensions and implications of cancel culture and celebrity bashing, but also its impact on those involved, the industries in which this happens, or the social structures which they touch upon. Anchored in the journal's aims and scope, to scrutinizing societal organization and everyday lives, contributors are invited to undertake semiotic analyses that focus on the interconnected nature of words, images, behaviors, and various other signifying elements. We encourage scholars to explore how these semiotic phenomena contribute to the construction of societal narratives, and particularly, how they may perpetuate biases, imbalances, or legitimize and sustain power interests - issues laid bare by cancel culture and celebrity bashing. The analytical frameworks for articles may draw upon linguistic analysis, visual analysis, content analysis, ethnography, interviews, or production studies, anchored in the principles of Social Semiotics. A critical aspect of the submission should lie in its ability to unveil and critique the limitations and variations in how (semiotic) resources related to or practices like canceling and celebrity bashing expose potential reinforcement of societal power dynamics. We look forward to including a global perspective, contributions discussing particular cases, cultures, countries are most welcome. This Special Issue wishes to contribute to a nuanced and critical understanding of these phenomena, but also enrich the scholarly dialogue on the social-, cultural-, and political framework of fame, celebrity, morality, and social accountability. At this stage, we solicit abstracts of max. 350 words length. We will then select a number of submissions, to be developed in an article of 7/8000 words (bibliography included). Dear all, The Flashlab seminar is thrilled to announce the first session of its new quarterly *“Bodies and Digital technologies” series* which will be held in hybrid format on* Thursday April 18, 2024* from *4pm to 5:30pm Central European Time (CET)*. We will welcome *Zelly Martin* (The University of Texas at Austin) for a presentation entitled: *“End-to-end encryption as sociotechnical process: How pro-choice activists construct security beyond material tools.”* *Abstract*: On June 24th, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and thus the federal right to abortion for people who can get pregnant in the United States. In the nearly two years since, 21 U.S. states have restricted or banned abortion, resulting in a cascade of suffering, including people forced to travel to access abortion care of even wanted pregnancies with fatal fetal abnormalities. Concurrently, our increasingly datafied society and related surveillance capitalism poses dire threats for people who use the internet to access abortion or do abortion-related work. Social media platforms share data with law enforcement that can–and has–negatively impact those seeking care, as in the infamous case of a Nebraska mother and daughter’s Facebook messages being used as evidence to criminalize the daughter’s self-managed abortion. As such, encrypted messaging apps, or chat apps which ensure only the sender and receiver of a message may view its content, have become crucial tools for abortion-seekers and abortion activists. Yet, there are potential harms associated with such a heavy reliance upon exclusively technical security. As part of my dissertation research, I conducted interviews with pro-choice activists, anti-abortion activists, pro-encryption activists, and Texas law enforcement to understand the sociotechnical processes of creating privacy and security in a post-Roe America. In this talk, I will explore the continued necessity for feminist community-building beyond mere technical security, and the need for reframing encryption ideology beyond its techno-libertarian, white, patriarchal roots. *Flashlab is an independent hybrid seminar led by and for early-stage social science researchers interested in digital technologies. C2i2 Summer 2024 Fellowship Call: Internet Democracies We are interested in work on the intersections of democracy/democracies and the Internet, broadly conceived. We are open to a wide range of disciplines, methods, approaches, theoretical traditions and standpoints including but not limited to: critical Internet studies, critical data studies, science and technology studies, technology law and policy, equity and justice-oriented work on technology and or democratic processes and governance, etc. We are excited to welcome a diverse cohort working across local, regional and global scales. Applicants should have an approved prospectus by the start of the fellowship. This program is designed to release students from any employment obligations that might act as a barrier to dissertation work and awardees should consider it as their primary summer activity. Fellows will have the opportunity to meet with mentors associated with C2i2 in support of their projects. We aim to facilitate close working relationships between the C2i2 broader network and awardees to expand student networks during a crucial time in their graduate school career. Awardees are expected to meet monthly with their peers and mentors in order to present works-in-progress, receive feedback and address needs that might arise over the summer. All meetings for Summer 2022 will be virtual. Although the fellowship is confined to the summer (July-September), fellows will have access to the C2i2 network and C2i2 affiliation for the entirety of the academic year. All fellows will receive a stipend of $8,000.00. All meetings will be virtual. The main technical program at GROUP will welcome submissions in a variety of forms. Traditional Papers report on high-quality, rigorous research results. We will also continue the submission category of Design Fiction, which may use a variety of speculative methods to explore the futures toward which technology research and design are working. Finally, we explicitly encourage shorter Notes style submissions, which maintain a high level of quality and rigor while focusing on a more circumscribed result that can be presented succinctly. To help set expectations, authors will have the opportunity to indicate to reviewers that their submission should be reviewed as a paper, a note, or as a design fiction. All papers, design fictions, and notes will be published in the Group track of Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction (PACMHCI). Paper length should be commensurate with contribution, and typical submissions are: * Note: between 4,000 and 6,000 words * Full Paper: between 7,000 and 10,000 words * Design Fiction: between 4,000 and 10,000 words. Design fiction should clearly state that the paper is a design fiction in the abstract. Papers that are widely over the typical length (e.g., above 12,000 words) will be examined carefully to ensure that the size of the contribution warrants the length of the paper. Papers whose lengths are incommensurate with their contributions will be rejected. Papers are subject to anonymous review. Submissions must have authors’ names and affiliations removed, and avoid obvious identifying statements. Any grant information that identifies the author(s) and their institution should be removed as well. Citations to authors’ own relevant work should be done without identifying the authors. For example, “Prior work by [authors]” instead of “In our prior work.” If you for some very specific reasons have challenges with writing the paper in an anonymous way, please contact paper chairs and ask for advice, Papers that clearly violate the anonymization policy, including within the supplemental materials, will be desk rejected. Please check in particular the front page, headers and footers, and the Acknowledgement section. Also, check the meta information in papers prepared using word. GROUP does not have a policy against uploading preprints to SSRN or arXiv before they are submitted for review at the conference. In recognition that research happens more frequently than a biennial conference, GROUP 2025 will offer authors two waves of submission opportunities. Both waves will undergo a rigorous two-round review process, to guarantee that the accepted submissions comply with the quality standards of a journal submission. Initial submissions that are reviewed positively will be invited to be revised and resubmitted. The second wave submission deadline is May 8, 2024, and accepted submissions will appear in PACMHCI in early 2025. Submissions that are accepted after the revision process from both waves will be invited to present at the conference (likely to be held at Sanibel Island, FL, in January, 2025). It will be required that at least one author for each paper registers for the conference by the time the camera-ready version of the accepted paper is completed for each submission wave. Remote presentation will not be possible, authors who are not planning to attend the conference will be required to pay a publication fee (registration and publication fees will be indicated later on the conference website).
