Overview -------- The Workshop on Online Abuse and Harms (WOAH) invites paper submissions from a wide range of fields, including natural language processing, machine learning, computational social sciences, law, politics, psychology, sociology and cultural studies. We explicitly encourage interdisciplinary submissions, technical as well as non-technical submissions, and submissions that focus on under-resourced languages. We also invite non-archival submissions and civil society reports. The topics covered by WOAH include, but are not limited to: New models or methods for detecting abusive and harmful online content, including misinformation; Biases and limitations of existing detection models or datasets for abusive and harmful online content, particularly those in commercial use; New datasets and taxonomies for online abuse and harms; New evaluation metrics and procedures for the detection of harmful content; Dynamics of online abuse and harms, as well as their impact on different communities Social, legal, and ethical implications of detecting, monitoring and moderating online abuse In addition, we invite submissions related to the theme for this eighth edition of WOAH, which will be online harms in the age of large language models. Highly capable Large Language Models (LLMs) are now widely deployed and easily accessible by millions across the globe. Without proper safeguards, these LLMs will readily follow malicious instructions and generate toxic content. Even the safest LLMs can be exploited by bad actors for harmful purposes. With this theme, we invite submissions that explore the implications of LLMs for the creation, dissemination and detection of harmful online content. We are interested in how to stop LLMs from following malicious instructions and generating toxic content, but also how they could be used to improve content moderation and enable countermeasures like personalised counterspeech. To support our theme, we have invited an interdisciplinary line-up of high-profile speakers across academia, industry and public policy. Submission Guidelines -------- Submission is electronic, using the Softconf START conference management system. Submission link: https://softconf.com/naacl2024/WOAH2024/manager/scmd.cgi?scmd=submitPaperCu… The workshop will accept three types of papers. 1) Academic Papers (long and short): Long papers of up to 8 pages, excluding references, and short papers of up to 4 pages, excluding references. Unlimited pages for references and appendices. Accepted papers will be given an additional page of content to address reviewer comments. Previously published papers cannot be accepted. 2) Non-Archival Submissions: Up to 2 pages, excluding references, to summarise and showcase in-progress work and work published elsewhere. 3) Civil Society Reports: Non-archival submissions, with a minimum of 2 pages and no upper limit. Can include work published elsewhere. All submissions must use the official ACL style files. Submissions that do not conform to the required styles, including paper size, margin width, and font size restrictions, will be rejected without review. Self-references that reveal the author's identity, e.g., "We previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...", should be avoided. Instead, use citations such as "Smith previously showed (Smith, 1991) ...". Following the NAACL 2024 guidelines, we believe that it is also important to discuss the limitations of your work, in addition to its strengths. The “Limitations” section will appear at the end of the paper, after the discussion/conclusions section and before the references, and will not count towards the page limit. CFP: Care-ful convening "Fantasize" and "Actualize" sections

Dear Colleagues, A reminder that 500-1500 word submissions to the "Fantasize" and "Actualize" sections of the Journal of Environmental Media special issue 6.2 "Care-ful Convening: towards low carbon and inclusive knowledge sharing” are due May 15th. As per the CFP: The consequences of human-induced climate change, the extinction of flora and fauna, pollution, environmental predation, and injustices are causing a spectrum of constraints, shrinkage, alteration and loss (Murphy, 2017; Elliott, 2018; Dokumaci, 2023). In response, people are figuring out how to think, communicate and act differently to account for damages done by systems whose human, more-than-human, and planetary harms are fueled by petrocultures (Chapman & Ahmed, 2021; Gomez-Barris, 2018; Táíwò, 2022). Carbon-concerned researchers, professionals, and citizens are advancing necessary shifts, including the design and implementation of alternative forms of communicating and gathering. Our call invites scholars across disciplines to explore the articulation between media and new forms of collaborative and non-extractive ways of knowledge exchange and communication. Rodwell argues that at the dawn of a potentially transformative moment in television history, content conservatism has triumphed over technological innovation. Despite the ambition and idealism of Japanese TV professionals and independent journalists, corporate media worked to squelch interactive broadcast projects such as smartphone-playable television and live-streamed and open press conferences before they caught on. Instead, interactive programming in the hands of major TV networks retained the structure and qualities of most other television and maintained conventional barriers between audiences and the actual space of broadcast. Despite their lack of success, the innovators behind these experiments nonetheless sought to expand the possibilities for mass media, national identity, and open journalism.

============= Queer Data Days ============= A Wikidata Gender Diversity Project Event 15 & 16 March 2024 at 14:00 - 19:30 GMT A two-day virtual event hosted on the Zoom platform The Wikidata Gender Diversity project (https://wigedi.com) is proud to present Queer Data Days, a two-day virtual event hosted on the Zoom platform. The aim of the event is to provide an opportunity for researchers, activists, and artists investigating or applying queer approaches to data and technology to meet in an open and inclusive venue, share their latest work, and engage in fruitful discussion. During the event, speakers with different backgrounds — both academic and non-academic — will share short papers on a broad range of topics including queer data, queer identities, queer language, data justice and power, queer design, and queer communities on digital platforms. The event will be held on Friday the 15th and Saturday the 16th of March 2024, from 2:00pm to 7:30pm GMT. The first day will be primarily centred on the Wikimedia ecosystem. DSA Data Access Audit and Survey

Dear colleagues, First, a TL;DR: Today's announced CrowdTangle shutdown demonstrates the urgency of gathering systematic evidence that can be shared with the European Commission and other policymakers regarding the efficacy of platform data access programs that are required under Article 40.12 of the Digital Services Act. *Please take and share this survey <https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qqOhoz3tVut3E2>* (jointly launched by IDDP and CITR) to help us understand 1) which of the programs you were aware of (there are a lot!), 2) your experiences applying for access to these programs, and 3) other concerns and considerations*.* *This is relevant to researchers living and working anywhere, not just in Europe.* Now for the full details... By now most of you have probably heard that Meta has announced an end date for CrowdTangle: August 14, 2024. That Meta didn't shut down CrowdTangle earlier, and that they've created a replacement tool--the Meta Content Library (MCL)--is itself a real, if bitter, victory. A victory made possible by the tireless efforts of so many academic researchers and civil society organizations, including many AoIR members. More specifically, after listening to researchers, the European Union introduced Article 40.12 of the DSA, which requires Meta and other very large online platforms and search engines to provide real-time access to public data to academic and civil society researchers. The MCL is Meta's response. Twelve other services run by seven companies have launched data access programs as well <https://iddp.gwu.edu/platform-transparency-tools-brussels-effect>. *However, the MCL is far from perfect. It's certainly nowhere near an adequate replacement for CrowdTangle. And we have real reason to be concerned about the programs that the other companies have established.* With that in mind, George Washington University's Institute for Data, Democracy & Politics and the Coalition for Independent Technology Research have collaborated to launch the *DSA Data Access Audit <https://independenttechresearch.org/introducing-the-dsa-data-access-audit/>* . As a first step, we're fielding a survey <https://utexas.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qqOhoz3tVut3E2> that's focused on gathering information about 1) people's awareness of all these data access programs, 2) experiences applying for them (or deciding *not* to apply for them), and 3) broader data access concerns you might have. We'll also be conducting interviews and undertaking more traditional audits of the data access programs, but this survey will allow us to gather some initial data to begin informing the Commission, other policymakers, and the public about the current state of affairs.
