CFP:Inaugural issue of Journal of Research Practice (JRP): Innovations and Challenges in Multiple Domains

Dear Members, On the behalf of editors of JRP, I would like to bring to your attention a new journal that focuses on Research Practice in multiple domains. Information about JRP and Call for Papers can be found at http://home.ximb.ac.in/~dpdash/JRP.htm. Editorial focus of JRP is provided below: Editorial Focus The Journal would seek to develop our understanding of research as a type of social practice, evolving in contact with other practices within a complex and changing environment. Therefore, the journal would seek to sustain a healthy engagement with the generic issues of research practice as they arise in multiple domains of research. A broad aim is to learn about research from the experience of researchers in multiple fields, focusing especially on how they have been adapting to respond to new demands and challenges. The journal should develop appreciation of the practice of research as it keeps unfolding in various domains. It would explore why and how different activities, criteria, methods, and languages become part of research in any domain. The aim would be to enrich research practice as a whole by considering the challenges facing researchers in different areas and the interesting innovations developed by them to respond to those challenges. Learning from the successful and unsuccessful innovations may guide us in meeting new challenges and resolving new puzzles in the future. More specifically, the journal's focus and preferences can be stated in the following terms: (a) Research as a Social Practice: In presenting research as an evolving social practice, the journal should call attention to the evolution of the generic principles and conventions guiding research practice. The responsibility of the research community to itself and to the public must also be considered, especially in cases where a research process (or product) leads to negative externalities for any group of stakeholders. (b) Open Inquiry: A sense of open inquiry should characterise the journal. This will involve engagement with multiple areas of research, building awareness of the changing nature of problem contexts, acknowledgement of the researchers' involvement and risk, openness to encountering the unexpected, re-conceptualisation of existing ideas, and commitment to reach beyond existing institutional or traditional blinkers. This should draw upon the interdependence and synergies among individual and collective accomplishments in science, art, design, intervention, etc. (c) Connecting Researchers: The journal should help create reflective conversations across disciplinary boundaries, thus linking research communities. Because the journal spans a number of different research fields, the writings should be accessible to readers from different disciplines. Authors need to be careful with the jargon and the embedded assumptions peculiar to a discipline. The journal should promote work that combines or compares multiple knowledge systems, bridges disciplines, stretches existing paradigms and methodological frameworks, and asks new questions about research. (d) Contexts of Research: The contents of the journal should not be discipline oriented, but focus on the variety of contexts in which researchers find themselves. The journal should focus on the challenges and opportunities these different contexts present before researchers and the kinds of innovation developed in research practice. The problems and prospects of these innovations for future research practice should also be assessed. (e) Evaluation and Support: The journal should be a source of support for researchers and reflective practitioners in different domains. It should generate evaluations of the practical methods followed in different disciplines and practices. It should aim to develop alternative perspectives for researchers and reflective practitioners to explore in their own domains. (f) Contemporary Relevance: The journal should connect with the human and social conditions of our times, help bridge multiple global divides, address institutional malfunctioning, explore the power of connective (and cooperative) technologies, and advance lifelong learning. The journal should seek contemporary relevance by striving to specify, contest, and extend the perspectives involved in the multiple practices that define our world. The focus should be on enhancing our capacity to observe and act more effectively in that world, using results characteristic of research. In short, the Journal of Research Practice aspires to become a common window to the world of research, thus contributing to a culture of open learning and mutual support among researchers, reflective practitioners, and users of their service. I'd like to see an empirical analysis and objective study of the limitations of so-called Internet "freedom." In other words, instead of talking about cyberspace and it's wonders in the utopian abstract, the post was designed to elicit some potential thoughts and ideas on the need to map out just how bound by the real world the Internet is, especially in regards to issues like freedom of speech and expression. In particular, while there has been prior research done that looks at so-called totalitarian and dictatorial societies like China, I'm curious to see how Herman and Chomsky's theories regarding the Manufacture of Consent in so-called Democratic countries like the United States play out in cyberspace and how that intersects with traditional broadcast and print media. In the U.S., which is more prevalent: governmental, corporate, or individual censorship of unpopular voices on the net? Stuff like that. That's imprecise and I'm rambling, but I think you get the point. If someone's done these type of in-depth studies already, please point me to them. I'm not an academic, so I depend on you highly trained folks to do this work for me, so that I can then go out and apply it to my activism and advocacy work. Thank you. Art

One outcome of the September conference was that participants said they wanted a conference/workshop devoted completely on Internet Research Ethics.... and this is that conference! Charles Ess, who conducted the ethics session in Minnesota, has agreed to lead our discussions for this conference, which will be held June 17-19 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Elizabeth Buchanan, editor of the book Readings in Virtual Research Ethics: Issues and Controversies, also will give a presentation and assist with discussions; as will Annette Markham, University of Illinois at Chicago, who will talk about IRBs and research methods; and Phil Weiser, University of Colorado at Boulder, will talk about legal issues and Internet research. I am writing to invite your participation in the "Understanding Internet Research Ethics" symposium/workshop June 17-19 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Digital Generations: Children, young people and new media 26-29 July 2004 London, England A major international conference organised by The Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media Institute of Education, University of London Computer games, the internet and other new communications media are often seen to pose threats and dangers to young people; but they also provide new opportunities for creativity and self-determination. This international conference will present the most exciting and challenging new research on children, young people and new digital media. We aim to bring together researchers from a range of academic disciplines – including media and cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, psychology and education – and to promote dialogue within and across research traditions. We also aim to develop dialogue between researchers, practitioners in digital media, and educators. Keynote speakers include David Buckingham (University of London), Mizuko Ito (University of Southern California), Henry Jenkins (MIT), Gunther Kress (University of London) and Sonia Livingstone (London School of Economics). The last day of the conference will be an education day featuring new research and strategies for teachers, as well as workshops led by practitioners, such as games and web designers. We have accepted around 100 papers from over 30 countries, covering topics such as video gaming, online communities, video and music production and mobile telephones. CALL FOR PAPERS TO DOCAM '04 The Document Academy presents: DOCAM '04 on: Documents in Convergent Media Environments The Second International Conference on Document Research and Development in Sciences, Arts and Business October 22-24, 2004 University of California, Berkeley DOCAM '04 is the second annual meeting of The Document Academy, an international network chaired and cosponsored by The Program of Documentation Studies, University of Tromsoe, Norway and The School of Information Management and Systems, UC Berkeley. This year we have the pleasure of presenting our French partner: Key-note speaker: Jean-Michel Salaün, ENSSIB - RTP-DOC the chief manager of the «Réseau Thématique Pluridisciplinaire 33», "Documents et contenu : création, indexation, navigation" (2002 - ), a national network in Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies, CNRS (http://rtp-doc.enssib.fr) The main goal for DOCAM '04 is to develop a space and offer time for interdisciplinary and international research cooperation. The multidisciplinary approach in the project enables us to study the problem of converging media from different perspectives, both theoretical and experimental. Announcement: Community Work Symposium - May 21

On Friday, May 21 2004, The ITU's Center for Computer Games Research will be hosting an all-day symposium entitled "Community Work: Managing Multiplayer Culture." Multiplayer game designers and administrators are not simply engaged in creating stable game structures and systems of play but are deeply involved in the creation of communities, cultures, and behaviors. While much has been discussed around the technical challenges MMOG's pose, this symposium takes up the subject of community management and suggests that the design and maintenance of these vibrant worlds pose some of the most interesting challenges facing games today. Speakers for the event are Richard Bartle, Edward Castronova, Julian Dibbell, and Jessica Mulligan. The symposium is free but registration is required by May 14. suggestions for consultants?

Dear AoIR-ists: this is a bit off the mark of this list - but I'm looking for suggestions for independent consultants who could help my university in the review of our help desk, network, email, and PC/Mac support. The administration has invited Collegis - described as "the largest independent provider of technology solutions to higher education" - to review our existing Computer Services organization and infrastructure as well as the current use of technology on campus. Collegis will then submit a proposal for providing these services on an outsourcing basis. The independent consultant will be asked to review our current technology operations and the proposal from Collegis. The consultant would provide recommendations which could range from investing in our own department to other corporate providers. Any suggestions for such folk - including contact information - would be greatly appreciated.
