Dear colleagues: A few weeks back I asked you via this mailing list to participate in a 2 minute Web experiment. Here are the results and some background information. During Subjective Probability, Utility and Decision Making (SPUDM) conference I had the pleasure of listening to a fascinating talk by Craig McKenzie on information leaking as an alternative explanation of the framing effect. (The framing effect describes the phenomenon that people make remarkably different decisions if the same fact is described "positively", i.e. "the cup is half full", from when it is described "negatively", i.e. "the cup is half empty"). As my own methodological goal for that conference I had set an overnight replication of one of the experiments in first day's presentations using our group's tools for Internet-based experimenting, to be able to present the results along with our methodology on the second day of the conference. Kavanaugh The use of the Internet in homes rivals the advent of the telephone, radio, or television in social significance. Daily use of the World Wide Web and e-mail is taken for granted in many families, and the computer-linked internet is becoming an integral part of the physical and audiovisual environment. The internet's features of personalization, interactivity, and information abundance raise profound new issues for parents and children. Most researchers studying the impact of the Internet on families begin with the assumption that the family is the central influence in preparing a child to live in society and that home is where that influence takes place. In The Wired Homestead, communication theorists and social scientists offer recent findings on the effects of the internet on the lives of the family unit and its members. The book examines historical precedents of parental concern over "new" media such as television. It then looks at specific issues surrounding parental oversight of Internet use, such as rules about revealing personal information, time limits, and Web site restrictions. It looks at the effects of the Web on both domestic life and entire neighborhoods. The wealth of information offered and the formulation of emerging issues regarding parents and children lay the foundation for further research in this developing field. Title: An Exploration of Web Manifestations of University-Industry-Government Relations in the UK Academia, government and industry do not and cannot operate in isolation in a modern economy. Academic research is now also conducted inside industry as well as in partnerships between industry and universities. An important new role of government is to promote university-industry collaboration and practice-oriented, problem solving research (Mode 2 Science) rather than more abstract and theory oriented research (Mode 1 Science). As with any area in which the government spends enormous amounts of money, there is a need to assess value and to understand the processes that links funding to desirable outcomes (increased national competitiveness). The object of the PhD is to explore a source of information about UIG connections: the web sites of the organisations concerned. The objective is not to assess the quality of connections, but to evaluate the extent to which such connections are visible on the web and can be used to extract useful knowledge. How to Apply This post is available to an Information Science or Social Science graduate, Internet Researcher or other graduate with relevant expertise. The research is of an interdisciplinary nature and the student will need to gain knowledge of areas outside of their discipline. This will include learning web page creation and studying selected statistical techniques. The studentship is to run for a three years with a bursary of £7,500 p.a.
