What are the implications for future political engagement when media content is at once youth-focused, consumerist, and escapist? Is the intellectual a historical phenomenon like the troubadour or the condottiere - or a vital cultural resource in the consumer world? How do the media drive the interests and values of some locations and suppress those from elsewhere? Is metrocentrism a major form of parochialism of developed media societies? What is the collective geographical subject of news producers, and who is defined through otherness? What are the demographics of inclusion and exclusion, and how do geographical identities relate to ethnicity, gender and class? How do national metrocentrisms map on to international media coverage, not least of the new category, 'asylum seeker'? Getting past 'post-feminism': the spectacle of the female body is as never before a standard component of the economies of tv, cinema, and the web, with even pre-teens now the target of legal as well as criminal image-producers across several media. What is the political meaning of these developments? In what ways may we comprehend alternative responses to female spectacle - for example, within some domains of Islam? Does the growth of spectacle of the male body 'equalize' the politics of the image or does it only make it easier to oppress women? Has the reach of techno-economic power made progressive sexual politics irrelevant? The media and the end of history - a view from several continents: if political action is based on historical consciousness, how do the media affect historical knowledge? Do they help to obliterate history? How much resistance can there be to powerful media-borne versions of history? Does the web liberate individuals from institutional oppression, or increase Western/Anglophone ownership of history? Does computer technology exile history by intensifying the present? BAD SUBJECTS SPECIAL ISSUE: PROTEST CULTURES CALL FOR PAPERS In the wake of the demonstrations against the Iraq War that met George Bush, Jr. in London, and the anti-FTAA demonstrations in Miami, Bad Subjects [http://eserver.org/bs] is publishing a year-end special issue on Protest Cultures. This issue will be dedicated to examining the role of public protest in confronting the dominant orders of the American Empire and capitalism; economic, cultural, and media globalism; and the modalities of state violence, visible and less visible. What current strategies of confrontation and protest are most effective in creating a shared resistance to the normalization of imperial culture? How do mobilizations occur and to what effect? How does staging protests contribute to the creation of peaceful civil societies and social justice? What forms of political organization and collective action emerge from protests to energize democratic practice and confront anti-democratic authority? This special issue emphasizes the co-location of many political movements and cultures within a broad, transnational oppositional camp. Essays might address protest planning, staging geographies, personal experience, spontaneous protests, anti-capitalist and labor protests, independent and corporate reportage, internal organization, ideological conflicts among protestors, artwork and creative protest, or policing and control, and should articulate some argument concerning protest praxis and politics. Relevant essays on historical protests are also invited. The Social and Cultural Movements Group, Edge Hill College, UK 2nd International Conference: Imaging Social Movements Thursday 1st July to Saturday 3rd July 2004 Call for Papers Following the success of its 2002 conference: Making Social Movements: The British Marxist Historians, the Social Movements Group is organising a 2nd International Conference for Summer 2004, exploring the theme of the construction of images, representations and articulations of social movements. The effectiveness of social movements has always relied not only upon the political activity and its theoretical conception, but also upon its cultural representation and aesthetics. The changing media, cultural and technological landscape has transformed the means and media by which social movements can create and contest their 'image', and how others create and contest images of them. Social impacts of digital "piracy"

Hello (This is my first time posting to the list, so I guess I'm officially "de-cloaking"!) As part of a soci/anth field research course I'm taking at Concordia University, I'm doing a small-scale research project on digital appropriation tactics among young Canadian males, a practice that is often called "piracy". However, I don't use that term, because it seems laden with negative sterotypes and pre-conceptions. I'm particularly interested in how these youth integrate their music downloading/ripping, software "softlifting", image/text/slogan/logo lifting practices, etc. into their identity, sense of agency, power relations with society and attendance of social norms. These are areas of research and inquiry on this topic that don't seem to have much done on them yet, which is largely why I chose this topic over other digital culture research possibilities. As part of the research project, I am expected to do an analysis and report on at least 6 academic journal articles from peer-reviewed publications. So far, though, there doesn't seem to be anything written in the soci/anth/psych/cul.studies literature about the identity and social/personal aspects of these practices. All hits to date have revolved around authorship, financial/legal/civil impacts and the like. Thus, I'm putting out the call to all of you -- are you aware of any academic-focused articles written about this topic, particularly with same focus as my own? Do you know of anyone who has done qual./quan. Research on the topic? Have you perhaps presented something yourself at a conference that isn't yet published? If you'd be willing to share your research/article or point me to a resource or individual, I would be very grateful. While I'd also appreciate referrals to certain books or websites, my list of these resources is fairly long already. It is primarily academic journal articles, scholarly conference proceedings and scholarly-focused articles/research that I now require. Thanks in advance for any and all help! I attended the conference of the Society for Chaos Theory in Psychology and the Life Sciences this past summer and one member presented a software for analysing information. He did some analysis of on-line text for me and it was useful re thematic counting and could possibly do participation as well if the analytical text was set up for that. It does numbers and diagramatics and probably could track chaotic formulas. It is called "Crawdad" and is accessible for academic use. The man's name is Kevin Dooley and he is based at Arizona State University http://www.eas.asu.edu/~kdooley/ This isn't my area really so hopefully this is of use, and I know of a few more interactive interfaces that visualize interactions that is of nearer my interests.
