IRB permissions for online gaming studies?

Hello - I have a student conducting a thesis on the communicative behavior in online games (one will be a U.S. game such as Everquest and another will be a Chinese game). She would like to conduct participant observation. We are having difficulties with our IRB (Committee that approves research on Human Subjects), primarily because players may be children. Research that involves children requires parental consent. Another problem is that the IRB at my university does not have experience with this type of research, and so they don't have models to draw on (or to guide us). I am interested in hearing from anyone who has been able to gain approval for this type of research - your help is much appreciated - mj Michele H. Looking for book on Internet Research Methods.

I am an Associate Book Review Editor for the prestigious Journal of Marketing Research. I am currently looking to review books that illustrate and analyze the issues involved in research methods that are based on the Internet/Web (e.g. analysis of textual data available in blogs/web sites/chat rooms/USENET groups, social network analysis, e-mail surveys, online focus groups, clickstream analysis, data mining). I am interested in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. I am interested in books that are designed for beginners and for advanced readers. I am interested in books written for small technical audiences as well as larger audiences (e.g. social science researchers). Greetings: I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as can make it at the upcoming AoIR 2003 conference in Toronto, our fourth annual conference. The quality of papers and presentations promises to be outstanding, and I am grateful to Matt Allen, our program chair, and the numerous reviewers who looked over the many paper and panel submissions this year. As most of you know this will be my final conference as AoIR president, and it has been a privilege and an honor to oversee four of the best conferences I have ever attended. I will look forward to participating in future ones as a member! As has been the case the past three years I am nearly overwhelmed by the breadth and depth of the program, and cannot wait to begin the meeting. A great deal of effort has gone into the planning of the conference, and much has particularly been contributed by Liss Jeffrey and volunteers and colleagues in Toronto. Johannes Birringer "reappearcances and oracles" Film installation by Johannes Birringer (editor) The first international Interaction Laboratory at the former Coal Mine Göttelborn took place in July 2003, produced by Industrial Culture Saar and organized by director/choreographer Johannes Birringer. Göttelborn is projected to become a future high tech location of the Saarland, a small state in southwest Germany bordering on France and Luxemburg. The Laboratory was designed as an experiment in the re-utilization of the abandoned site which now anticipates economic and architectural development. In this changing landscape of industrial culture, an innovative platform was seeded for integrated research in media and technologies, especially interactive performance and telecommunications. The film reflects the project introducing some of the poetic interactions with the location in the work of the 21 participants of the laboratory who came from four different continents. Camera: Jim Ruxton, Maria Stamenkovic, Beatrice Sauberbrey and Johannes > Birringer. Editor/Producer: Johannes Birringer 2. Lisa Naugle "Songs of Sorrow, Songs of Hope" (2001) A performance commemorating September 11, 2001 tragedies was conducted in real-time at New York University and the University of California, Irvine. At UCI, The Dance and Digital Performance Ensemble, directed by Lisa Naugle, explored new ways to work with technology, sending high-bandwidth audio and video back and forth using Internet 2. Internet 2 allowed each venue to receive sound and video simultaneously. The performers on each coast interacted in a structured improv isational mix using VBrick Systems' television-quality video-over-IP system, which enables each venue to receive sound and video in real time. One of the visual threads created with John Crawford was "The Machine Meeting Its Reflection" or the image of airplanes crashing into the World Trade Center, meeting their own reflection in the windows; also creating a conceptual reflection on technology, the disaster of it and its power to bounce back and effect us.
