Three Tenure-Line Faculty Positions in Telecommunications Indiana University, Bloomington The Department of Telecommunications seeks three additional tenure-line faculty. One of the hires may be at the associate or full level. Candidates should hold the Ph.D., M.F.A. or other appropriate terminal degree, and present a promising program of (1) scholarly research using social scientific, legal, or historical methods related to electronic media/communications, or (2) creative activity in interactive new media. They also must be able to teach effectively in one or more of our undergraduate or graduate areas of concentration. On the undergraduate level, these are Media and Society, Design and Production, and Industry and Management. On the graduate level, these are Processes and Effects, Law and Policy, Management, and Interactive New Media Design. In light of the departments current needs, we especially seek individuals with teaching and research or creative interests in the following areas: * Electronic media / telecommunications law and policy. Scholars with expertise in Internet law and policy (and related areas) or in global/international telecommunications law and policy are encouraged to apply. Candidates for this position may have a background in legal/historical research, economics, political science, or other appropriate disciplines. * Management of media enterprises. The department is especially interested in scholars of traditional or new media, with a background in management, organizational communication, economics, or any other appropriate discipline. We seek applicants who can teach such courses as telecommunications management, media entertainment/programming, broadband and web economics, and/or media advertising/marketing/e-commerce. The ideal candidate will strengthen our media management curriculum, especially at the master's level. * Computer game design and interactive storytelling. Candidates for this position will have interests in interactive entertainment design and with demonstrated competence in linear script-writing for television and/or non-linear script-writing for interactive storytelling and game design; interactive sound and music; 3D modeling for character animation and level design, or networked game programming. Applicants must be able to teach effectively in the departments Design and Production undergraduate area as well as in its Interactive New Media Design graduate area of concentration (MIME). Beyond this, our overriding objective is to attract the best applicants in the field. We encourage qualified applicants who would contribute to any of the graduate or undergraduate areas of concentration indicated above. The department offers a B.A. in Telecommunications as well as M.A., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. It features a special program on the graduate level in new media (MIME) and a joint M.S./J.D. degree with the IU School of Law. It also offers an undergraduate Certificate in New Media and Interactive Storytelling. Applicants should submit 1) a cover letter summarizing their qualifications for the position, 2) a current vita, 3) selected publications or a portfolio documenting recent creative work, including recent student work if relevant and 4) evidence of effective teaching. I'm starting to work on a 400 level (senior) undergraduate seminar for the spring focused on non-commercial uses for multimedia. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to use Rich Media Poor Democracy as one of the texts (the one that "establishes the nature of the problem") . . . but I'm not having much luck finding the "and here's what we can do about it with new media" text for the other side of the equation. Any suggestions? Our students are very very practical . . . the program itself is a production major at a comprehensive institution . . . the students aren't very well positioned for "critical theory." I'm looking for practical ways to leverage what we do with web/cd/dvd authoring as positive contributions to our culture as opposed to only showing students how to make stuff that works in commercial products and projects. thanks for any suggestions. Please circulate to interested colleagues. -- Mobile Entertainment: User Centred Perspectives A conference organised by CRIC, University of Manchester Supported by the European Commission: mGain (IST-2001-38846) 25th - 27th March 2004 Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester Liverpool Road Manchester, England. www.mobile-ent.org The international conference Mobile Entertainment: User Centred Perspectives is being organised by the ESRC Centre for Research on Innovation & Competition (CRIC) in Manchester as part of the European Commission funded mGain project. It aims to bring together research on technologies, services, content, policy and consumption in relation to mobile entertainment. Papers are invited on all areas of mobile entertainment and user needs from researchers in academia, industry and policy areas. The conference organisers particularly welcome empirically-driven, case-study based and practitioner-motivated research. Paper presentations should be planned to take 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes of questions and discussion. Posters will be displayed throughout the event but time will also be dedicated for authors to answer questions of the work presented. The submission process is the same for all type of presentations. Abstracts providing an overview of the work to be presented and details of data or models used should be no more than 4000 characters long (approx 650 words) long and must be submitted via the conference web site at www.mobile-ent.org. The conference language is English. The Student Paper Competition Registered students will have the opportunity to win a free place at the conference and contribution towards travel and accommodation expenses. Papers for consideration for this competition can be on any theme relevant to the conference and must be submitted by 12th Jan 2004. Full details will be made available on the conference web site. In addition to paper and poster presentations a varied programme of events will take place during the conference: Workshops: A workshop exclusively for students and researchers at the beginning of their careers will take place prior to the conference on Wed 24th March. This is free to registered delegates and support with accommodation costs for the night of 24th March may be available. A number of thematic/birds of a feather workshops and a session exploring industry/academia links will take place at the conference. Further details of these will be made available on the conference web site as they are confirmed. Social & Networking Events: 24th March: Pre-registration welcome and showcase. This event will involve short presentations from developers and solution providers and informal networking. This event will be organised in conjunction with the International Games Developers Association (IGDA). 25th March: A wine reception in the newly opened Money Gallery of the Manchester Museum with key speakers and buffet. 26th March: The conference dinner followed by night at a top Manchester club for the younger (or young at heart) delegates. Good Technology Proposal Models?

Hello All, I am working with Health World Children's Museum to develop a proposal for a project I am developing called Sports Smarts. The goal is to develop web-based, standards-based, online/print/live teaching activities focused on sports for K-12 students. The content will be health and safety activities for boy and girls, with simulation and chat components, with a focus on traditionally underserved, high risk students. I am working on a demo now. I am wondering if anyone on this list has seen good models for executive summaries for funding proposals relating to educational technology projects such as this. I am trying to consolidate 1000 pages of research into a 3 page outline describing the project goals, objectives, and proposed outcomes. Based in the heart of Oxford, this new department in the University's social sciences' division aims to become the world's leading multi-disciplinary academic centre studying the societal implications of the Internet. You will have a postgraduate degree in a discipline relevant to social research on the Internet, knowledge of Internet technology and industry and excellent oral and written expression, including public speaking.
