democracy & culture; political flash apps

AIR Friends: I am a big fan of describing the role of the internet in political life as a story of democracy and culture. For a candidate, the bottom line may be winning. For candidates, the bottom line may be winning, but I would disagree with JSG if she means that the 'bottom line' for those of us studying political culture should be candidate victories. Stories about politics online always involve some exciting new innovation and some disheartening stories of ugly political tricks. So both McCain and Bradley campaigns were innovative in that they used the Internet to organize decent campaigns in states where they had no paid full-time staff. They raised big bucks online, but only after media blitz on the possibilities of an upset and many of those "pledges" were taken over the phone and processed through webforms by volunteers sitting at campaign HQ. I don't think its going out on a limb to say there are a number of legislative campaigns, both elite lobbyist and grassroots campaigns, that have won _because_ of the internet. If this is out on a limb I'd hope it can be part of JSG's tree. It is really important to move beyond win/loss measures of the internet's role in political culture. Looking for internet effects the traditional polisci way means treating a bunch of phenomena additively, such that campaign communications strategy is one of a dozen factors (along with charisma, financing, platform) that add up to a explain a candidate's victory. Will the internet be making a difference when a wired campaign strategy (wired/not wired) provides 51% of the explained variation in electoral outcomes (candidate win/loose)? Even if you could create the database for such a model, I'd bet that the role of the internet in candidate campaigns is increasingly important yet increasingly ubiquitous, not increasingly pronounced and distinct. Being interested in political culture should mean looking for the contours of complex interaction between the variables. As a Ventura IT guy said, they "didn't win because of the internet, but wouldn't have won without it." With the traditional, additive analytical frame, this statement from the Ventura campaign would make their case unworthy of study. I think the internet made a difference in the 2000 Presidential election, where difference = deep part of political culture, not wired campaign = victory. I think secondary candidates like McCain, Bradley and Nader got further than expected; campaign communications were significantly more agile than in 1996; online posturing became a crucial part of impression management in the 48 hours after the Florida recount debacle. Activists dreamed up some really effective apps, including vote-swapping apps, candidate-citizen affinity matching apps, campaign finance tracking apps and more. They also generated a huge volume of political humor in the form of jokes, art, flash ads etc, which circulated well beyond activist networks. I agree Dean's campaign is innovative and seems to have really integrated internet-based apps into its campaign communications strategies. But will he or the richer campaigns be using the bots that join lists to promote and 'engage' list members? What kind of datamining will they do online? What are the internal power relations like between IT consultants and other campaign workers? Talk-backing

Dear Jacob, and others members, In Vietnam, “talk-backing” is becoming more and more common among about 400,000 Internet users (quite a small number in comparison with a population of 81 million.) Sorry that I am replying a little late. I am a newcomer to this interesting forum. I have been Director of one of the two most popular Vietnamese News sites, www.vnn.vn. By the way, I hope you all have gotten the second annual report on cyberspace: "The Internet under Surveillance - Obstacles to the free flow of information online,” (19 June 2003, Reporters Without Borders.) (http://www.oneworld.net/external/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rsf.fr%2Farticle.php…) In the part about Vietnam, our site has been noted as a “government information site.” As one of the developers of this news site from a portal of an IT company, I think this is an overgeneralization. It seems typical that when we don’t have enough information, we paint situations with a broad brush. I am now studying at an American university, and I would be very happy to share what I know from my practical experience in our online journalism, if some of you are interested. Back to the “talk-back”: the Vietnamese are used to discussing news in offices, on the streets, everywhere. But though the Internet was introduced into VN in 1997, by the end of 2001, there were only the interactive form of forums (on or off-line). Not too much about responding to news items. The first “news” discussion online could be seen in the forum “Today’s issue” of vnn.vn since the day it was established in September 2001. The September 11th tragedy made the forum come into its own. An average of 200 opinions was received each day, and they were very opposite opinions. Another news site, “Readers write,” then opened, and found success too. The news networks from this time on became more interactive. We know that Vietnamese users like topics such as human interest, international politics (war, peace, conflicts ), and, of course, topics concerning their own lives (policies, prices, diseases). Human interest stories brought the audience to a new stage of interactivity. People wanted to help those in trouble. Our office even had to set up a group to receive donations and offers to volunteer. This is real interactivity! Another new common form of “talk-backing” is the online interview. In this, the Web sites invite people to appear as guests and interact with the public. This is done one or two times a week. An example is the interview with the president of IDG Patrick McGovern, who came to our office in Ha noi and responsed in the real time to questions of the VNN readers (http://www.vnn.vn/507/2003/7/18868/) These online, interactive interviews elicit a good response, especially if the topic or person is interesting, such as about hot issues. One thing I can see as a difference in the behavior of Vietnamese users is that they like to talk about macro issues and, most of the time, talk from an optimistic perspective. It seems like “talk-backing” is the kind of active political expression that the Vietnamese historically have been used to. There are about 400,000 internet users inside country and who knows how many from the2.5 million overseas. At the present time, “talk-backing” in all its forms should contribute to citizen involvement. I hope I could help a little, Jacob. And I would like to learn much from your opinions too. History and architecture of chat rooms/spaces

Hello AoIR list-ers: I am trying to find some background materials on the history and origins of chat rooms, as well as some more technical information about their architecture/software. To my mind this includes IRC, MUDs, MOOs as well as your standard AOL-style chat room, but I am open to expansions or contractions of this definition. At the moment, I'm leaving out IM, but I could be convinced otherwise. Anyway, if anyone has any articles, web sites, books, or other resources that they know of, I'd be most appreciative. email extraction program

Hi all: Does anyone have a suggestion for a program that turns email messages (I use Netscape 7) into text files? I tried mail2txt but it included all the hidden html codes, which means I'll still have to strip each one individually. I'm trying to find the most painless way to get 4 months of listserv messages into text files so I can import them into QSR N6 for analysis! I was led to believe that this latest version of NUD*IST had a utility to do this itself ("swift data import"). But no! All documents must be text files, which was the case when I used it last a few versions back. Grrrr. Studies on K-12 reading, reading comprehension, and/or learning on the Internet

Hi everyone. I have really enjoyed following the posts to this list and exchanging information and ideas with a number of members. We seem like a wonderfully diverse and supportive group. I am hoping to get to my first conference this year in Toronto so that I can begin to make personal contact. I am writing to let interested individuals know of a project we are working on at the University of Connecticut and to request advice. First the work. This year we are conducting a reanalysis of the 2002 US National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data on reading (national data of reading achievement in the US). We seek to develop a factor analytic model of relationships between reading achievement and technology use by race, class, and gender. Part of this work also involves completing a research review of experimental and quasi-experimental studies of reading, reading comprehension, and learning among K-12 (roughly ages 5-18) students within Internet contexts. The purpose of this review is to inform both the factor analytic model we are developing as well as to inform the development of the next NAEP assessment, with an eye to possibly expanding NAEP’s current definition of reading to include reading on the Internet in their assessment. Now the request for advice. We have started an extensive review of the literature for this last part of the project using the traditional tools: PsychInfo, ERIC, Soc Abstracts, etc. As part of our procedures, we are also querying experts as to the most important journals where this type of work appears and to the most important studies with which they are familiar on reading, reading comprehension, and learning within K-12 Internet contexts. If you are familiar with this area of study, could you provide the titles of the most important journals publishing this type of work and/or any critically important studies that we should not overlook. Workshop on 'UbiDesign, HCI aspects in scenarios of convergent media', 14th March, Orlando, Florida (USA)- in adjunction to PerCom 2004. Abstract The workshop intends to explore and analyse crucial issues in the design of the interaction in scenarios of ubiquitous communication (multi-device interaction). Theme and interest of the topic The recent developments in communication technologies (3G, iTV, broadband, etc) will strongly enhance and extend communication possibilities in ubiquitous contexts. In this sense, convergent media is becoming one of the main relevant HCI issues. Therefore, new design approaches, HF studies, behavioural theories and evaluation techniques must arise in order to be able to design interactive mobile artefacts that provide the user with a positive experience. Objectives Development of a HF research agenda for this specific issue, to identify and extend the research community in this topic. Moreover, to sensitise designers to the particular interaction-design issues in these kind of communication scenarios (learning models, interface evaluation, etc.). Target audience The workshop is intended for practitioners working in the communications industry (as telecom and iTV: device manufacturers, service providers, etc.), for HF academics and for students with interests in human computer interaction and mobile interaction. Participants will be asked to submit a brief position paper or a reference to a Related project in which they have been involved (max 5 A4 pages). Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest in and familiarity with the topic. Although not particular skills are required, basic knowledge of interaction design issues are recommendable. A group not bigger than 20 participants will be very suitable to a positive share knowledge and experiences. However, if the interest in this topic significantly increases and request to participate warrant, then it would consider reformatting the workshop to accommodate larger numbers. Duration and organization The workshop is designed as a one-day practical activity with relevant theoretical discussion, ending with a poster design session. After the presentations and debate, participants will be invited to choose a format of interactive service for ubiquitous contexts and hypothesise a suitable scenario of use that will enhance users' interactive experience with several devices. Each team will be asked to summarise its findings with a poster presentation. Expected outcomes This workshop will evaluate the evolution of HCI for convergent media and discuss new challenges for the industry in this field. Posters will summarise findings from groups' works. Results of the Workshop will also be made available on the Workshop's Web site. Wright Mills, _The Sociological Imagination_ Bourdieu and Wacquant, _An Invitation to Reflexive Sociology_ (really just the third section for a methods course) Neither is comm or method specific, but they are, in my opinion, two of the most important books ever written on research design. Mills attacks the fetishization of theory and method, and closes with a really derisory description of his work patterns. Some of the book is dated, but it's amazing how much of it ISN'T dated. The third section of the _Invitation_ is about doing research that matters and learning to ask intelligent and important questions before applying method. I've taught both books at the graduate level with great success. You'll need some methodologies as well (remember: a methodology is a theory or description of a method, not the method itself), but these Mills and Bourdieu will give you something many methodologies don't.
