Extended submissions deadline (18th June!) Workshop on "HCI design aspects for applications of m-commerce" - 8 September 2003, in adjunction to MOBILE HCI 03, in Udine (Italy) The topic of the workshop M-commerce is one of the most challenging problems regarding interaction with mobile devices. The workshop intends to explore and analyse the main features in the design of scenarios of mobile commerce for the incoming 3G mobile communication technologies. One of the main problems to the diffusion of m-commerce in Europe was the applications' lack of usability. Furthermore there are other m-commerce related aspects as micro-payments, wireless authentication for proximity transactions, interactive-ads for mobile devices etc that deserve special attention by HCI designers. Mobile scenarios which are a fertile area for new applications and services, require an original approach to user centred interface design. Therefore, new design approaches, HF studies, behavioural theories and evaluation techniques need to arise in order to be able to design interactive m-commerce applications and services that provide the user with a positive experience. This workshop aims is to sensitise participants to these specific HCI design issues for mobile applications of m-commerce; to share the experience gained in several case studies; to explore the most appropriate techniques of interface design and evaluation in this type of device range and to identify possible areas of exploration to extend the HCI research community in the proposed topic. ------------------------------------------ The activity organization The workshop is designed as a one-day practical activity with relevant theoretical discussion, ending with a poster design session. After the presentations and discussion, participants will be invited to choose a particular format for mobile-commerce (book payment, cinema booking, etc.) and hypothesise a plausible scenario of use (mainly when he is 'on the move' - e.g. in a train, using a pocket PC or a mobile phone) for these services or applications. It is indeed a sad time. Rob Kling was among those who introduced me to this field when I was an undergraduate at UC Irvine. I was lucky to be there when the intersection between the social sciences and computer sciences was a rare occurrence on American campuses. I crossed paths with Rob at a symposium on scholarly communication a couple of weeks before his death, and had wanted to find some way of thanking him for that early encouragement, but couldn't find the words. Pat and I were colleagues in the Ph.D. program at the University of Washington, and given our shared interests, we would often talk about the direction of the field and sometimes lecture in each other's classes. She had an extensive network of friends and colleagues, and was never shy about connecting together those whom she thought would share interests. The last time I heard from her, earlier this year, it was to introduce me to someone she thought would be able to help me with some of my research on blogs. Both of these people, in very different ways, affected the direction of my studies and the way I think about the academic world. I know I am not alone in this--their personal influence was widely felt in our community. Since I have missed the opportunity to thank the two of them directly, I thank them here. Although relatively new as an academic, Pat had a long career as a science journalist specializing in new technologies. I got to know her when in the course of doing her Ph.D. work she approached me as someone with overlapping interests who lived near her research contacts in Nova Scotia. We believe she died of a heart attack. It comes as a shock to all of us, and we've been trying hard for the past week to understand how something like this could happen, and where to go from here. Many of you have sent cards, flowers, and e-mails expressing your sorrow at her passing, and for that we are very grateful. It has been uplifting to know how she impacted so many people's lives in such a positive way. The support has been invaluable to us in a very difficult time. The past five days have been a whirlwind, like a very long nightmare, and I'm sending this out today just to let you know that your messages, letters, and cards are not going unread. We are planning a memorial celebration of her life for Sunday, June 29th (it would have been her 58th birthday). We have not worked out the details yet, but we hope to have plans made by the end of next week. It will be in the Bay Area, and will likely run all afternoon. Everyone is welcome to join us. I will send an e-mail out once we have details to share with you. Pat's school, Cal State Hayward, is in the process of setting up a Memorial Scholarship in her name. We think this is a wonderful way to keep her legacy alive, and would prefer any donations be made to this cause. Again, I will pass on information regarding this when it becomes available. My mom had so many friends in so many corners of the world that we felt e-mail would be the best way to keep in touch with everyone. We have tried to gather e-mail addresses from many of her sources, but I'm sure we have missed many people. PLEASE SEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO YOU DON'T SEE ON THE RECIPIENT LIST WHO YOU KNOW WOULD LIKE TO BE INFORMED OF THIS. Give them my e-mail address, and ask them to send me a note so I can add them to our address book. I was thinking today about what metaphors might be appropriate for internet security. I was considering primarily metaphors based on current technology. If you had to think that the internet security was most like a the security issues surrounding another technology, would you think that it was more like keeping a house secure, or a wallet? a car secure or a toaster secure? thoughts? other ideas?

The Couch Award is presented annually to recognize competitive papers produced by students at undergraduate or graduate level who make use of the theories and/or methodologies of social research advocated by the late Carl J. Couch, founder of the "New Iowa School" of symbolic interactionism. The winning paper is "Social Interaction and Meaning Construction among [Pro-Anorexic] Community Websites" by Camille Johnson, M.A. candidate, University of Illinois at Chicago Department of Communication. The Runner Up is "A/S/L Everyone!: The Presence of the Body in Web-Based Chat Rooms" by Sarah Michele Ford, Ph.D. candidate in sociology, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Third place paper is "Virtual Religion: a Study of Spiritual Webmasters" by Terra McDaniel, based on her M.A. thesis, University of Houston, Department of Sociology. CCCSIR congratulates these winners, who have been invited to present their papers at the annual meeting of the Association of Internet Researchers, to be held this year in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, October 16-19 2003. The Information Society (TIS) update

The Information Society (TIS) update Rob's sudden passing away on May 15th was a shock for everybody, especially so for those of us who had been interacting with him almost on a daily basis. It felt so unreal. For a while we kept TIS humming on an ad hoc basis. We now have a more formal arrangement for TIS operations. I will be serving as the interim editor till the end of this year. I will do my best to preserve the orientation that Rob gave to TIS. Since I had the privilege of working with Rob over the last three years, I have been asked: What was Rob's vision for TIS? In my opinion, it was not so much a vision but an attitude that Rob brought to TIS that made all the difference. He had no methodological fetish and welcomed works from any perspective as long as they opened a window in the mind. The results of this openness are evident on the pages of TIS where juxtaposition of papers drawn from disparate research traditions generates a surprising harmony. We are promoted to think beyond the confines of our own cubbyholes. Our challenge is to prolong this moment of openness for as long as possible. TIS continues to welcome good ideas from diverse sources. If you have an exciting project going, we look forward to hearing about it.
