call for chapters on mobile phones and young people

Dr. Nina Wakeford and I ran a workshop at the Annenberg Center for Communication in October 2002, presenting the results of our research on mobile phones and the cultural worlds of young people. We presented some of these findings at AOIR 2002. We are now in talks with a publisher about a volume on mobile phones and young people. Before we finalize the proposal, we would like to invite researchers with recent, empirically-based work in this area to contribute. We are particularly interested in research that might be considered innovative, for example, in terms of methodology, areas of the world or types of people discussed. If you would like to suggest a chapter for consideration, please send either one of us an email by JUNE 1 with a few sentences describing your possible contribution. Thank you. - For STS scholars in the Southern states and beyond, The Mid South Sociological Association (MSSA) is calling for papers for an 'Internet and Society' session. The conference is November 5-8 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At the present, the Internet and Society session is penciled in for November 5. It hopes to attract a broad range of multi-disciplinary work in this new and growing field. That means you don't have to be classified as a sociologist to attend or present. Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Media Practice (2 posts) Ref: 226 £26,270 - £33,679 or £35,251 - £39,958 (pro-rata for 0.5 post) (one full time and one 0.5 permanent) The successful candidate will have a strong record of critical practice and experience of practice teaching in Higher Education. Preference will be given to candidates offering at least one of the following specialisms: photography/digital imaging, fiction production, sound/radio, documentary (still or moving image), interactive media. For the senior position, an international level of research performance would be expected, together with evidence of academic leadership in learning, teaching, or quality assurance. The academic specialism of the post is open, however the candidate?s work would be expected to be compatible with the Cultural Studies re-orientation of the Departmental Research Strategy. Also below you will see a link to a workshop proceedings on open source held at ICSE 2003 which I had the privilege to co-organize with Joe Feller, Brian Fitzgerald and Scott Hisham. ********************************* Paper 1 Authors: Fitzgerald, Brian & Tony Kenny Title: Open Source Software can Improve the Health of the Bank Balance - The Beaumont Hospital Experience http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/fitzgeraldkenny.pdf Abstract: This study describes the implementation of open source software in a large Irish public sector organization, Beaumont Hospital. The findings reveal a radical shift in open source deployment from invisible horizontal infrastructure systems to highly visible vertical applications. The case study describes the implementation of these systems, the difficulties encountered, and also the benefits in terms of astonishing cost savings of €13m over 5 years. . Given that Beaumont were already receiving academic pricing discounts for many of their original proprietary closed source applications, the savings for a typical commercial organization could be even higher. The study also identifies the primary drivers in the move to OSS, namely principle, pragmatism and practicality. The study also indicates how a typical company can contribute back to the OSS community in their own unique way, by distributing applications form their own domain of expertise, rather than having to make detailed code contributions to the original code base. Paper 2 Authors: Narduzzo, Alessandro & Alessandro Rossi Title: Modularity in Action: GNU/Linux and Free/Open Source Software Development Model Unleashed http://opensource.mit.edu/papers/narduzzorossi.pdf Abstract: Organizational and managerial theories of modularity applied to the design and production of complex artifacts are used to interpret the rise and success of Free/Open Source Software. Strengths and risks of the adoption of a modular approach in software project management are introduced and are related to the achievements of the GNU/ Linux project. It is suggested that mindful implementation of the principles of modularity may improve the rate of success of many Free/Open Source software projects. Invitation to "Visit" an online dialogue

Folks, There is an online dialogue currently underway in California that you might find interesting. http://www.webdialogues.net. This is a public dialogue on education policy: It is the second policy dialogue with CA legislators about California's long range education Master Plan. The first dialogue, about the Plan, was conducted last spring, almost 1000 people registered. The current dialogue is about the legislation being developed to implement key aspects of the Plan. Almost 700 people are participating from throughout the state. Panelists include nine legislative sponsors of the eight bills plus other experts. The dialogue is being hosted AND conducted by the CA Education Master Plan staff. They are using a dialogue environment that is easy to manage for the non-technical. The site is managed (and all content is added) through web forms accessible by administrators. Announcements, summaries, feedback surveys, etc. are automated. I've been developing and producing large-scale online dialogues for years and this is very smooth. You don't have to register to look around. You do have to register to post. And, your contributions would be welcome in the discussion. The discussion will be going on through the end of this week, May 23. The Web site will be available for at least a year. Cultures of Techno science - Ethnography, Humans/Machines, and Objectivity Anchor teacher: professor Lucy Suchman Centre for Science Studies Lancaster University WTMC Summer school 8-12 September 2003 Since the first laboratory ethnographies at the end of the 1970s, science and technology studies have developed unique insights into the heterogeneity of scientific and technological cultures. This work made clear that 'science' is not a unified phenomenon, living a life of its own separate from other social sectors. This contradicted the tradition, still strong today, to speak of science as a unique, unified way to produce knowledge. Many claims on behalf of science or high technology are based on this image. Science studies has made clear that knowledge is situated knowledge. Objectivity is bounded, contextualized, and therefore relative objectivity. Instead of the scientific culture, it seems more productive to speak of scientific cultures. Even the sub domain of techno science, presently the most prestigious form of knowledge production, is carried out through a variety of ways of living and forms of knowing. This year's WTMC Summer School takes as its central theme techno scientific cultures and ways to study them. Ethnographic studies of techno science will be presented and discussed, with a focus on new insights into the changing relationship between humans and machines. And we will take a closer look at how scientific objectivities are being produced in the context of the techno sciences. Professor Lucy Suchman is a founding contributor to the ethnographic study of techno science. She has acquired fame as a specialist in human-machine interaction and in theories of the relationship between humans and machines. Suchman is a Collaborating Editor of Social Studies of Science. She has received a number of awards for her work, among them the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science.
