Re mediation of National identity on the Net, this is in someways trans-national, but Ananda Mitra has done good work on the e-disapora and has a forthcoming summary article in the Encyclopedia of Community, and Don Slater's book on Trinidadians overseas links is expressly on this issue. There are huge opportunities to look at how websites, discussion lists, etc help organize both diasporic and within-country identity and information. I think that these sources mean that more is known informally in Toronto (the most multiethnic city in the world) about the rest of the world than the formal media knows. The networks will work on topics related to the program's focus on the uses and applications of information technology (IT) among transnational civil society organizations, on the international policies and decisions about IT that affect those uses and applications, and on the potential for civil society to shape those policies and decisions. Scholars and activists with expertise on these topics should submit a CV, a relevant writing sample and a one-paragraph description of research interests via e-mail by May 15, 2003 to Ms. Marcela Sabino at sabino(a)ssrc.org. A report by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2001 stated that the estimated change in the total size of the worlds elderly population between July 1999 and July 2000 was more than 9.5 million people, growing at an average of 795,000 people each month. This trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Recent research shows that more older adults are beginning to incorporate Web use in their daily activities, mainly because the Web presents an opportunity for them to maintain a high quality of life. However, as a robust body of research shows, various issues arise when older adults use the Web. FOCUS AND AIMS ============== The main objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers, academics and practitioners from various disciplines who are interested in web usability and ageing. Methodologies, theories, products and design guidelines as well as case studies that investigate these issues will be presented. Furthermore, through the presentations and discussions out of this workshop a taxonomy of issues and methods related to web usability for the ageing population will be proposed and formulated. SUGGESTED TOPICS ================ 1. Information architecture and the older user. 2. Empirical studies on web usability and older users. 3. Analytic studies & computational modelling of the older web user. 4. Social aspects of web and aging SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ======================= Each participant is asked to submit and present a short 2 page long position paper. Apologies for any cross posting 1st Call for Papers: Deviance on the Internet: New Challenges for Social Science Special Issue of Social Science Computer Review: Fall 2004 This special issue of Social Science Computer Review will bring together a collection of high quality academic work that extends, refines and challenges our understanding of 'deviant' behaviour on the Internet. Across the globe, there are increasing legislative, technological and surveillance efforts - all seemingly aimed at deviant (and sometime benign) Internet use. Not only does the Internet pose novel challenges in affording new forms of 'deviance' that need to be understood, but it also poses a unique opportunity for social scientists to influence policy aimed at such 'deviance'. This special issue will bring together papers that investigate specific cases of 'deviant' behavior, as well as theoretical work that discusses the notion of deviance as applied to the Internet, policy and legal implications and methodologies. Papers from a broad range of social science perspectives are encouraged. Submissions can be in the form of full papers (maximum 20 printed pages) or in the form of short papers (5 printed pages). Post-graduate students are particularly encouraged to submit early work in the form of short papers.
