Bringing Together Interdisciplinary Approaches" which will take place from April 10 to 12, 2024, in Munich, Germany. The workshop will bring together researchers, experts, and individuals interested in hybrid human-AI systems to discuss how different disciplines understand and address these hybrid systems, and how these individual perspectives can contribute to an interdisciplinary understanding of the collaboration between humans and machines. Bringing Together Interdisciplinary Approaches  Johannes Moser, Libuše Hannah Vepřek, and Leonie Thal  The research fields of /Human Computation/ and /Hybrid Intelligence/ investigate how the capabilities of humans and computers can be combined in novel ways, thereby overcoming the limitations of today’s strictly computational /Artificial Intelligence/ systems, and yielding the ability to address problems that neither can solve on their own. Such hybrid human–AI systems are of interest to several scientific disciplines, including computer science, philosophy, sociology, design, and cultural anthropology, as they not only enable new computational and engineering capabilities while posing interesting new problems on their own but also influence societies on a structural level and our everyday life at the micro level. They elicit questions on the human–AI relations in these hybrid systems that are ethical, judicial, social, cultural, logical, algorithmic, practical, and material in nature. This workshop brings together scholars, experts, and interested parties with an interest in hybrid human–AI systems to learn how different disciplines understand and approach these systems. The aim is to discuss how each discipline can contribute to an interdisciplinary understanding of the collaboration of humans and machines in such hybrid systems. With this workshop, we want to spark new conversations between different disciplines, addressing, among others, the following questions: * How does human computation and hybrid intelligence relate to pursuits of and discourses on /Artificial General Intelligence/ / /Strong AI/? * How can we grasp human-technology and societal relations unfolding within these systems? * How is trust established and (re)negotiated in such systems? * What forms of ethics arise in and with hybrid human-AI systems? * What are the unique perspectives of the different disciplines, and how can these inform one another? * How can we arrive at understandings that consider the disciplines’ different approaches and modes of reasoning? * How can we work together on these topics?  The workshop is organized as part of the research project “Playing /in the Loop/: New Human-Software Relations in Human Computation Systems and their Impacts on the Spheres of Everyday Life” funded by the German Research Foundation. Dear all, *Call for chapters* *Handbook on Anthropology and Artificial Intelligence* Edited by Sahana Udupa, Michiel Baas and Peter Hervik We are pleased to invite chapter contributions for the upcoming handbook on “Anthropology and Artificial Intelligence” (contracted with Edward Elgar Publishing, London). The handbook is designed as a comprehensive collection of anthropological studies on AI, covering empirical, methodological, theoretical and reflexive works emerging within the discipline of anthropology. We welcome submissions that may include original ethnographic fieldwork, conceptual or theoretical developments, methodological discussion or a combination of these. All Things in Moderation 2024 puts the age of crises under the microscope, and seeks to examine the role and impacts of online moderation in this era, with the goal of generating critical research and promoting greater understanding and visibility of diverse moderation practices. We will have one speaker per each event and all events will be hosted online, via Zoom. Every speaker will share their digital methodology/methods and the project in which the methodology was applied or developed, with a particular focus on the innovative aspects of that methodology, including benefits, challenges, ethical dimensions, challenges, etc. The audience for these workshops are members of the Digital Society and Economy Interdisciplinary Research Theme, including peer scholars and doctoral students. Abstract: We all play games, whether consciously for entertainment and education, or in interacting with digital systems that increasingly ‘gamify’ modern society, hinting towards an unseen future ‘metaverse’. However, how may we further use video games and simulations as research tools? University of Glasgow Games and Gaming Lab runs or hosts different cross-college projects promoting research into games themselves, but also into finding new ways of translating research and data into game form, or using games as innovative research tools. Whether modelling space missions or gaming the effects of generative AI, what are some possibilities and challenges posed by games? Equally, how may our uses of ‘history’ in such games critically change our ways of approaching future simulations? About our speaker: Dr Timothy Noël Peacock is a Lecturer in History and War Studies and Co-Director/founder of the University of Glasgow Games and Gaming Lab (UofGGamesLab). He leads up to 35 researchers, interns and programmers as Principal Investigator for funded research and educational cross-disciplinary innovation projects. Historicizing state quantification in disciplinary and control societies Luke Stark (Western University) Melissa Adler (University of Western Ontario) David Nemer (University of Virginia) https://nomadit.co.uk/conference/easst-4s2024/p/14425 Short Abstract: Numerical techniques and technologies used to inscribe and circulate differences—racial, gendered, class, caste-based, and others—are everywhere in disciplinary and control societies. This panel interrogates the history of these quantitative mechanisms of power, and the ways they have been resisted. Long Abstract: Numerous thinkers (including Fanon, Foucault, Deleuze, Crenshaw, Hartman, Freire, and others) have theorized the ways in which the political arithmetic of the capitalist state and its agents has prompted the development of numerical techniques and technologies to inscribe and circulate differences—racial, gendered, class, caste-based, and others—about populations intended for exploitation and dispossession. In this panel, we aim to further interrogate the history of these quantitative, statistical, and inferential mechanisms of power. >From the Enlightenment calculation of early American enslavers to the contemporary deep learning transformations of artificial intelligence (AI) practitioners, and even the human infrastructures that transmit disinformation through messaging apps, numbers have never been neutral nor free from narrative. This panel will focus on the continuities in thinking and practice around the use of numbers as a tool of oppression across both space and time, and the often-nuanced strategies of resistance and cooption that progressive social movements have deployed in response. Some of the questions we hope to see addressed by the panel include the following: • How have historical discourses and ideologies of inequality, oppression, and supremacy prompted, shaped, and refined quantitative or technical metrics and mechanisms of scientific or social differentiation? • How have the developers of these metrics and techniques drawn on transnational or global circuits of oppression? • What are examples of such technical metrics and mechanisms being developed in an overtly oppressive context and then laundered into more general scientific practice? How have professional fields such as medicine, statistics, and psychology grappled with or ignored these historical genealogies? • How have people and communities targeted by such numerical mechanisms resisted, responded, refused, and coopted these technologies? Platforms and Infrastructures in a Global Context*, deadline:* 15 February*. This conference will be held at the University of Sydney in a hybrid format. https://www.icahdq.org/mpage/ICA24-DigitalSovereignty Digital sovereignty refers to a countries’ autonomy and control over its digital data, systems and infrastructures. It is a term that has been deployed widely—by liberal states to assert citizens’ rights over the data they produce and by authoritarian states to justify surveilling and controlling their populations. At the same time, flows and forms of digital life offer new constructions of territoriality, governance, and identity, on more personal and humanistic terms. This post-conference brings together interdisciplinary perspectives to assess how new actors, technologies and global power struggles have shaped the discourses, architectures, and practices through which nation-states exercise and experience digital sovereignty. Recent geopolitical crises necessitate a re-thinking of digital sovereignty and its implications for digital policy and international affairs. In contemporary armed conflicts, like in the case of Russia’s war against Ukraine, where battles unfold across all layers of the digital communication spectrum, control over digital data flows has become a key strategic objective. In this context, digital sovereignty can be used to justify policies that facilitate the expansion of state power beyond established territorial borders. At the same time, how critical socio-technical systems are governed and by whom also determines experiences of digital sovereignty. UNESCO's 2023 *Internet for Trust* report calls for the inclusion of diverse perspectives in the global governance of digital platforms. While this recommendation is admirable, it remains unclear how it can be achieved in practice. As we have seen from the last twenty years of internet research, well-meaning governance principles often lack meaningful consultation with the Global South and can be derailed by market forces. Moreover, the continued decentralisation of key internet technologies and postcolonial data practices suggest sovereigns might be reconfiguring away from statist assumptions. By bringing together researchers from diverse jurisdictions, this post-conference aims to explore a range of inclusive and decolonial approaches to digital platform policy and governance, as well as global perspectives on human rights, state power and territoriality under various digital sovereignty regimes. We invite participants to submit a 500-word abstract on topics that fall within the scope of platforms and infrastructure in a global context via email to sicss.admin(a)sydney.edu.au by 15 February 2024. Este panel tiene como objetivo explorar las últimas tendencias y avances en técnicas de machine learning aplicadas a los ámbitos político, comunicativo y social, proporcionando una visión general de cómo estas herramientas pueden enriquecer y transformar nuestra comprensión de la realidad. Temas a tratar: - Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural, Minería de Texto y Análisis de Discurso: Una aproximación multidisciplinar al Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural (PLN) que profundiza en el papel interdisciplinario de la ciencia política y la comunicación en el desarrollo de esta área. Se dará especial atención a trabajos que utilicen técnicas de traslación del lenguaje humano al lenguaje de máquina, con enfoques en el estudio computacional de elementos como el discurso político, programas electorales, documentos legislativos y análisis de medios de comunicación. - Análisis de Redes Sociales y Política: Exploración de técnicas de análisis de redes sociales para la extracción y minería de datos. Además, se podrán plantear enfoques teóricos a través de trabajos empíricos para analizar cuestiones como la polarización política o la radicalización en plataformas digitales. - Speech to Text del carácter cualitativo de las entrevistas, debates y noticieros a su cuantificación: Discusión y presentación de técnicas algorítmicas sobre cómo la transcripción automática de discursos políticos puede facilitar el análisis de entrevistas o debates, permitiendo la búsqueda y cuantificación de temas y argumentos clave. - Computer Vision en Política: Presentación de investigaciones que aplican la visión computacional para el estudio de imágenes y videos políticos, incluyendo la detección de sentimientos, así como el análisis del lenguaje no verbal y la identificación de objetos y figuras políticas. - ¿IA?: Un debate multidisciplinar sobre las cuestiones que atañen a la ciencia política en el desarrollo e implementación de modelos computacionales. Objetivos: Este panel tiene como objetivo fomentar la discusión y el intercambio de conocimientos entre académicos, investigadores y profesionales de la Ciencia Política interesados en la aplicación de tecnologías avanzadas como minería de texto, procesamiento del lenguaje natural, computer vision, speech to text y el análisis de redes sociales. Pretendemos destacar las oportunidades y los desafíos de estas tecnologías en el análisis político y promover la colaboración multidisciplinar, además de reflexionar acerca del papel que los algoritmos desempeñan hoy día en los debates teóricos y empíricos. Formato del Panel: El panel contará con presentaciones de expertos en los temas mencionados, seguidas de una sesión de preguntas y respuestas con la audiencia. También se animará a los asistentes a participar activamente en la discusión y a compartir sus propias experiencias en la aplicación de estas tecnologías en la Ciencia Política.

If you are conducting collaborative, participatory, and/or community-driven work, and/or experimenting with new forms participant collaborative methods and authorship, consider submitting to Panel #257: Examining, designing, and building knowledge with: Methods for amplifying and integrating excluded perspetives. Short Abstract: “This panel will describe, demonstrate, suggest, and workshop methods of approaching research and design that share the authority over knowledge or outcomes with the participants or communities involved in their generation. Workshop element will incorporate the experience and priorities of attendees.” This panel will be a mix of more traditional panels and interactive workshop sections with emergent elements based on who is presenting and who is attending. Dan Gardner Currently: Chapman University Soon: Robert Gordon University Full Abstract: The academic industrial complex thrives and encourages authority through inhabiting the position of author. Publish or perish, we hear, and make sure you are “first!” Even in this abstract, I strive to perform some semblance of authority to suggest credibility. Author and authority fittingly share a Latin root referring to mastery and leadership. STS has a lengthy history of reflecting on our personal positionality, privileges, and situatedness related to the phenomena we observe and generate knowledge about. Our community is well-versed in considering how our own experiences and perspectives shape the kind of analysis we can produce. As our interdisciplinary pursuits adopt increasingly sensitive and reflexive approaches, there is still need to grapple with the inherently privileged and authoritative positionality of the basic mode of scholarship in the form of authorship. When is it appropriate to describe ourselves as the author(ity) of the lives and experiences of others? How can integrating the diverse perspectives of those with lived expertise related to whatever phenomena evolve our scholarship? There is a wealth of scholarship (especially in design research) on “participatory” methods or that suggests alternative means of disseminating knowledge. This panel invites, and celebrates, submissions that attempt to move beyond participation or cursory collaboration in their approach, to create analysis, designs, or knowledge with or within communities. Submissions should demonstrate or suggest methods of sharing authority over knowledge generation, especially to amplify historically under- or mis-represented communities, or around other critical topical areas. The panel will include more traditional talks and workshop activities. Submissions should: •Describe traditional scholarly looking work, where participants or community members shared authorship or were otherwise given an active stake in how data was analyzed or presented. •Present or suggest alternative, creative, artistic, or performative modes of disseminating knowledge that stem from and prioritize community-driven values or ontologies.
