Xerox split a group at PARC and sent some of them to Portland (Seattle) to force them to create innovative support applications. The (mixed) results are written up in: Margrethe H. Olson, Sara A. Home from Maastricht

Hi, Ronda and I are home after attending the Maastricht conference. We met some very nice people there and hope we will all try to stay in touch. I appreciated the lively discussion and attention given in the pre- conference workshop that I presented. Some of the presentations I attended were valuable as well. One observation, the submitted papers were not available at the conference. If they could not have appeared online, it would have been good to have had a few compilations of them available in printout form for those of us who value reading a paper before attending the session. After coming home, Ronda sent a post concerning Internet governance to some mailing lists. I think some readers of the AoIR would be interested in it as well. Introduction & General (Jones) Ulla has already sent the minutes of the meetings that took place in Maastricht and those serve in the place of the usual monthly reports from the executive committee. I did, however, want to add a post-Maastricht post-script. There are many people to thank for the success of the conference in Maastricht. I could create a list that would be longer than the longest air-l daily digest: The Infonomics Institute and its Director, Luc Soete, The Cal Company and the MECC (which I still think stands for "Monica's Excellent Conference Center"), the members of the program committee and our terrific program chair this year Klaus Bruhn Jensen, the members of the executive committee, our keynoters, Apple Computer, Sander Pomme, Herman Pijper, Sage Publications for sponsoring a refreshment break...and on and on. Nevertheless, the primary "mover and shaker" behind it was Monica Murero and she deserves all of the thanks and credit in the world, certainly far more than I can convey. It was through her hard work and dedication that the stage was literally set for the several days we were able to meet, talk, think, share, eat, in some cases dance, and for many us rarely get some sleep. The conference was splendid, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of the attendees, as well as many who were unable to attend, in addition to myself, by saying that Monica has earned her place in AoIR history. Given this, she and the others of you, whether in Maastricht or not, have assured AoIR a strong and vibrant future. Two years ago when we met for the first time at the University of Kansas it was not entirely certain that we would have another meeting. The good people at the University of Minnesota ensured that we would, and I was more than heartened by the turnout there, in the face of great unease about travel - some of which continues to this day, and if not unease about travel then unease about the prospect of war. I continue to be grateful that so many are willing to spend time away from family and other loved ones to be with colleagues and friends for some days. Spending time with one another is a gift I suspect we do not think about as much as we may have before we had the Internet and widespread use of email, but it is cherished. It is my hope that many of you will again spend some time together, with me, in Toronto, October 16 - 19, 2003. There is a productive and spirited discussion on air-meet already going on concerning planning for the conference, and I encourage you to join in if you would like (http://www.aoir.org/mailman/listinfo/air-meet) Liss Jeffrey, David Mitchell and Matthew Allen are already leading us toward another excellent gathering in a year's time. We will need reviewers for conference paper, panel, workshop, etc., proposals - I cannot stress enough how much we will need your help for that! And I encourage you to consider hosting a future conference, so I will be re-posting our Call for Hosts in a moment. It is, of course, a lot of work to host a conference, but with each one we are better able to plan and anticipate the needs. Given our rapid growth we need to be planning still further ahead, and I will look forward to our 2004, 2005 and beyond meetings,too, with great anticipation. It is on such a note of encouragement that I will end this report. AoIR has grown phenomenally, and to make it an association that you like, you need to be involved in it. If you like something about it, please work with us to make it more to your liking. If you don't like something about it, work to change it. Whatever you do, do not walk away from it - neither we, nor you, I venture, can possibly gain that way. We have a diverse group of members, and we could diversify still further, but diversification, like anything else, will not happen if we look for someone else to do it for us. Tell people you think might be interested in AoIR about us. Join in on air-meet or on a working group. Propose a working group to start a new initiative. Propose panels, papers. Post to air-l. This association sprang from the desire of a few people to do something and from the follow-up actions they took, and it can continue only if others act on their interests and desires. Norway Conference on Mobile Communication

An announcement of a conference that may be of interest to members of AOIR: Front stage/Back stage: Mobile communication and the renegotiation of the social sphere Announcing the fourth in a series of international conferences to examine the social and economic meanings of mobile communication. The conference will be held in Grimstad, Norway 22 - 24 June. Deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 November 2002. A link to the conference web site is http://emarkets.grm.hia.no/semoc/ Purpose of the conference: Mobile communication in its various forms, has arrived on the scene in a dramatic fashion. SMS, voice telephony, mobile Internet, WLAN technology, Bluetooth, PDAs and many other technologies and services are being used by broader and broader sections of society. Their general social acceptance and the increasing economic accessibility of mobile technologies have meant that they have been adopted and used by ever more groups in society. The use of these technologies has altered the way we interact, the way we present ourselves in both public and mediated communication and how we use our telecomm budgets. Taking a page from Goffman, we wish to frame the conference around mobile communication's impact on our front stage facades, our back stage interactions - as well as the blurring of these two. Our goal is to provide a forum wherein social scientists, economists, policy makers and industry representatives can meet to examine the ways in which social practises and routines related to mobile communication have and will influence the way that we go about our everyday lives. A limit of approximately 20 papers will be accepted for the conference.

Association of Internet Researchers 3rd Annual Conference, Maastricht, The Netherlands, October 13-16, 2002 Minutes (short version) of the Executive Committee Meeting (October 13, 2002): Attendance: All members of the executive committee (Steve Jones, Nancy Baym, Ben Bates, Ulla Bunz, David Silver, Barry Wellman, Leslie Shade, Matthew Allen, Lisbeth Klastrup, Jeremy Hunsinger, Charlie Breindahl) The meeting convened at 7 pm. 1. Welcome by Steve Jones (President) 2. Executive Officers' Reports 2.a) President, Steve Jones - Steve informed us that we could expect 400-450 people at the conference. - Based on a suggestion by Steve, the exec committee decided that based on individual performance and merit, the association will award program and conference chairs life membership in AoIR if their service is "above and beyond." This is awarded retroactively. So far, all previous program and conference chairs qualify. This motion was passed by acclamation. 3. Association Action Items 3.a) Website - Jeremy reported that due to security issues, he will have to re-do the members site soon. - The URL http://aoir.org/2003/ is directed to the conference website for 2003. 3.b) Elections - Nancy reported from the elections working committee, who's still hard at work. The working group will submit their final report to the executive committee by December 1, 2002. The executive committee will make final decisions based on this report by January 15, 2003. 3.c) Report of work committees 3.c) 1. Ethics committee - The statement of the ethics group will be presented during the conference. It will be further discussed during the General meeting. 3.c) 2. Web Resources Working Group - Charlie reported slow going due to limited participation. He said we need active members. Discussion and suggestions are great, but action is better. He asked that people interested get in touch with him. 3.d) Awards - Currently, we have the Couch Center award. This award is for the best paper on/related to symbolic interactionism. Conversations with the Couch Center are underway concerning establishing this award as a regular award at our annual conference meetings. - We also have keynote recognition plaques, but not retroactively. - We also have best student paper award, consisting of a plaque and a book selected by the program chair. - The committee is investigating other possible awards under the leadership of Matthew Allen. 3.d) Membership/Recruitment - Currently, we have between 350 and 400 members. - We are offering institutional memberships, but only have one such member. - Steve encouraged us all to continue our own, personal recruitment. This will also help to grow in a diverse fashion, which is something the entire exec supports. - Suggestions were made by several exec members about spreading the word and sustaining membership. The suggestions (mostly sending various messages to various audiences) will be put into effect. - Flyers etc. are still available on the website. 3.f) Spring Meeting - The executive committee will meet in Chicago in the Spring. 4. AoIR Conference Items 4.a) 1.-5. We decided to form a conference organizing workgroup to look into the following items: conference roles and responsibilities, program chair selection, hosts vs. internal planning, conference themes, programming mechanics, incl. reviewing. Nancy will chair this committee. Other volunteers include Barry, Ulla, Jeremy, Leslie. 4.a) 6. Call for Hosts, 2004 and beyond - We've had suggestions, though no ultimate proposals. Proposals/applications for 2004 & 2005 are due by December 1, 2002. 4.b) AoIR 2003 Specifics 4.b) 1.- 2. Status Report and Funding - Barry reported that Liss as the conference chair has great support, including Katherine Parrish. They are hard at work. - The grant proposal is due by November 1, 2002. We will find out in March. 4.b) 5. Book Exhibitors - We are currently evaluating different options. 4.b) 6. Program committee - air-meet is and air-con are ready (air-con focuses on reviewing issues) 4.b) 7. Timeline for conference organizing - AoIR 4.0 in Toronto: October 16-19, 2003 - We decided on requiring 500-750 word extended abstracts. In the CfP, we should include guidelines for what goes into abstract, i.e.: purpose, approach, contribution - Call for papers: Dec 1 - Deadline for submissions: Feb 15 - Notification of acceptance: April 1 - Date of pre-conference: Oct 14&15 5. New Business 5.a) Raising Dues - Steve reminded us we need to maintain our membership, but will also have to consider increasing membership dues. Hi there Enrique, welcome to the list I don't have stats directly, but have found the following two sites, both of which are industry oriented, useful in teaching about online Market Research. They might help http://cyberatlas.internet.com/ Primarily a site that gives LOTS of the stats which MR and opinion polls discover; however there might be material that is on the process of MR online itself. Lots of free basic info, ads for the very expensive detailed reports beloved of market research firms. http://www.quirks.com/ "Marketing Research Review" An online trade magazine, with good short articles, and resources; has had a lot of good discussion for and against online MR. Distributed Research labs - any examples/links ?

Hello At our department of Documentation Studies at the University of Tromsoe (the northernmost university in the world) we are working with the idea of making a distributed research lab, called The Document Academy, by linking a number of groups/departments/people from different places together with the aim of working together on document analysis, document development. It should not only be a place for presentation of research, but a place where the actual research work take place, sharing documents, editing documents etc. It should also include all kind of media/means like writing, images, video and sound. We are planning this together with people at our local center for tele medicine around the case of electronic patient record and people at SIMS/UC-Berkeley.
