Mito, Have a look at some of the findings from the Netville study. One of the key findings was that Internet use facilitated the formation of weak neighborhood ties and that this had implications for local collective action. I also have an article, "Place-Based and IT Mediated 'Community'" (Planning Theory & Practice 3(2)), that provides a social network argument for why ICTs are particularly likely to build weak neighborhood social ties. In the very near future I should also have a paper with results from my new "E-Neighbors" study of four Boston neighborhoods. Some very interesting findings related to Internet use, social networks, and neighborhoods. In particular a positive relationship between email use, but a negative relationship for Web surfing, and network diversity for both neighborhood and personal networks. NCA get together

Dear AIR friends: I've been exchange emails with several AIRers about a possible NCA get together. Having just seen each other last month, I'm sure we could not possibly want another bawdy night of drinks, dancing, fine food, and arguments over the difference between the web, new media, internet, cyberspace, etc. New Orleans seems like a quiet town, unlike Maastricht. We'd like to start at Napoleon House, 500 Chartres Street in the French Quarter 9ish on Saturday night. They don't take reservations, so whenever the the departmental parties end we can descend and demand more than carrots and canapés. I do research on micro-interaction and am advising an undergraduate senior thesis on the topic of email communication -- specifically, on the opportunities and challenges that define email as partially distinct from face-to-face communication. She's having some predictable trouble getting undergrads to share their email, and I'm looking around for other email corpora that she might use. She's especially interested in comparing formal-organizational with informal messages. I began using these concepts to make sense of forms of sociality observed in communities (both "virtual" and offline) I am studying. I read a few papers that make reference to these concepts, But I do not know anything really good. Other than suggestions for readings, I appreciate your thoughts on this matter as well. This is an area of particular interest to me--and my research, so I'd like to add a few refs and take some from what others have added. Hammonds, E. (1997). New Technologies of race. In J. Terry and M. Calvert (Eds.), Gender and technology in everyday life. (pp. 107-122). Burkhalter, B. (2000). Reading race online: discovering racial identity in Usenet discussions. In M. A. Smith & P. Kollack (Eds.), Communities in cyberspace. London: Routledge Mark Poster also wrote an essay on Virtual Ethnicity in Steve Jones' edited book (I believe it was Virtual Culture, but it might be Cybersociety 2.0). I know of others that are less explicit than Burkhalter about addressing race in online interaction . For instance, there are many books that address the larger (mostly from a political economic view) issues that structure race and technology, in particular those that address the digital divide. I'm thinking here of Gerald Sussman's book 1997). Communication, technology and politics in the Information Age. Thousand Oaks: sage Brian Loader's book on the Digital Divide, among others This is all i have on hand. Hope it helps.
