When you're told that getting a book published is not easy, you expect a lot of hard work, but be advised that a lot more can and, inevitably it seems, will go wrong. You'd hardly expect that the first shipment of your books actually goes up in flames, but in this case it did. It wasn't because of inflammatory content or fiery argument as a friend joked today, but because the freight container that was sitting in the Liverpool docks and held, amongst other things, my books, was broken into and set on fire. Less dramatic, but adding to the constant delays are the database problems the international distributor is having, preventing the book from getting listed in their online system. Possibly as a result all online bookstores insist on listing the book with a wrong subtitle. Never mind that both I and my publisher have mailed them about the problem numerous times. Government = 1:0. A decision of the criminal courts of Thessaloniki two days ago held that the law that had banned electronic gaming in public and private places is unconstitutional, under the rationale that it is contravening article 5 of the Hellenic Constitution pertaining to the Free Movement of Ideas. With the same decision two owners and one employee of Internet Cafés that had been arrested under the said unconstitutional law were found not guilty. According to all indications, the next step will be an attempt to overturn the controversial law before the Hellenic Conseil dEtat, i.e. the supreme administrative court of the Hellenic Republic, but also before the European Court. I also found it interesting but totally sensible that there was a category for online community. I encourage you to pass the information along. Here is the event information from the organizers: The III International Arts Festival of the City of Valencia, Venezuela, sponsored by the Fundacion para La Cultura and the Mayors Office and Fundación Solaris, a private non-profit organization dedicated to the arts, is an event whose goals, since inception, have been to show recognized as well as emerging forms of artistic expression in the Citys public spaces. The Festival encourages works that span gender, linguistic and disciplinary backgrounds. Journalist looking for Expert

Hi, I am a reporter with The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC who is working on a story about fantasy sports -- fantasy football in particular. Specifically, I'm focusing on how the Internet has helped drive the growth of the industry. I'm looking for anybody who has done research on these games and could offer insight on the role the of Internet in the space, how the games have affected offline activities, i.e. changed the way people watch sports on television or affected productivity at work, or any other sociological-type biproducts of these fantasy sports. I'm on a relativley tight deadline and looking to talk with someone before Thursday, Sept. 12 at noon EDT. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Does anyone use IRC for student classroom exercises - eg practicals of virtual participant observation? If so, I'd be interested in what kinds of exercises you set students. At MSc level, this is an example of a current exercise which I set, but I'm wondering whether to be more explicit about use of particular clients, sites etc. (1) Select a topic of sociological interest and investigate the UK online resources about this topic (You can refer back to Hine's study for an example). This might include web pages, email discussion lists, chat spaces, usenet newsgroups, etc. Outline how you might collect data and analyse this topic using ONE of the online sources which you have found (ie either a chat space OR a discussion list OR a set of web pages). Bear in mind the following potentially significant issues: a. The sources of the data (eg who hosts the site, or organises the mailing list) and the effect on the kind of data which can be collected b. Ethical problems in data collection or analysis c. How your study compares to the studies in the assigned reading list d. Any methodological issues which arise which are specific to your topic\ (The 'Hine' book is Christine Hine's excellent book 'Virtual Ethnography') In general, students seemed to enjoy the exercise, although some found it hard to limit themselves to UK resources on more marginal topics.
