I recently wrote a review of three software packages. The packages were chosen to represent three "kinds" of web survey systems. The three included Perseus SurveySolutions for the Web 4.0, zTelligence 2.0, and SPSS mrInterview. The review is in press... due to be released in the August 2002 edition of Field Methods. Full citation as follows: Crawford, S. (2002) "Evaluation of Web Survey Data Collection Systems." Field Methods. Vol. 14, No. 3. August. pp. 349-363. If you are interested, let me know and I'd be glad to send you a reprint when you get them. But in summary... there are a lot of low cost web survey systems out there. However, the adage "You get what you pay for." definitely applies in this area. And that is enhanced by the fact that the more it costs, the more complex/robust/capable the system is... which means the support costs (in internet infrastructure and people) greatly increase. Organizations that committ to maintaining a high quality web survey system with the proper infrastructure to support it shell out over $100k annually to do so. Because of this cost, another alternative (outsourcing), becomes very attractive for those who need to do web surveys to high academic standards, but don't have the volume to justify such an infrastructure. Community Informatics/Community Networking Research Mini-Conference Montreal, Canada, Oct. 8, 2002 (Second Call: Note Revisions) At the recent 'Shaping the Network Society' Conference in Seattle sponsored by CPSR (Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, http://www.cpsr.org, it was agreed to organize a day long Mini-Conference on Community Informatics/Community Networking Research on Oct. 8 in Montreal, Canada in conjunction with the World Forum on Community Networks (Oct.7- 12 ) <http://globalcn2002.ca> This is a follow-on to a successful series of research panels organized in conjunction with the Global Congress of Community Networks held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, <http://globalcn2001.org> in December 2001. Interested researchers are invited to submit proposals, short position statements, posters, panel sessions, project reports,and/or completed papers for peer review for presentation at the conference and for possible future publication as proceedings or as a special issue of an appropriate journal (remembering that space and time for this event is severely limited). As appropriate, research panels, workshops, and other presentation/discussion formats will be made available. It is also the intention to work initiate a more formalized research CI/CN research network at this meeting. "Community Informatics" is understood as being the study of the use of Information and Communications Technologies to enable community processes and "Community Networking" is understood as the study of community networks, their development, operation and their influence in support of community processes and community empowerment. [announcement] Digital Arts and Culture::2003 MelbourneDAC::streaming wor(l)ds The 2003 iteration of the Digital Arts and Culture (DAC) international conference series is to be held on the city campus of RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia from May 19 to 23, 2003. MelbourneDAC:streaming wor(l)ds will bring together an international cohort of artists, practitioners, developers, theorists and teachers to define and explore major themes and ideas confronting contemporary new media practice. [what is the Digital Arts and Culture conference?] DAC was founded in 1998 by Espen Aarseth as an international conference focusing on new media theory and practice in critical contexts. DAC seeks to bring together new media artists and theorists in a spirit of collaboration and exploration. It has nurtured a significant international community of young and innovative researchers, artists and scholars in the interdisciplinary field of new media, and has become the benchmark conference for research and collaborative endeavour in new media. DAC offers a forum that recognises the importance of bringing together leading practitioners from art and theory for the exchange of ideas and to develop international professional networks and knowledge economies. MelbourneDAC:streaming wor(l)ds intends to continue this role through the papers, panels, forums, and exhibition it hosts, and the innovative series of collaborative workshops and events that will be undertaken by all conference participants. The mission of MelbourneDAC is to exchange ideas and promote new developments in digital arts and culture and to ensure that all participants develop relevant and sustainable professional communities. A call for papers will be distributed shortly. A call for entries for the MelbourneDAC::streaming wor(l)ds exhibition will be distributed shortly. All conference material will be published (all participants will receive their copy during MelbourneDac). A mentoring process will be available to postgraduate students and new academics who wish to have feedback in the development of their contributions.
