Hello, I'm hunting around for work by anyone who's taken a critical look at the idea of memetics in relation to the learning that goes on in virtual environments. (and i'm conceiving of virtual learning environments rather broadly, although some obvious examples might be weblogs, mailinglists, etc.) even a brief mention in passing in a paragraph would be of interest. Couch Internet Research Award Sponsored by the Carl Couch Center for Social and Internet Research http://www.cccsir.org/ The Carl Couch Center issues an annual call for student-authored papers to be considered for Carl J. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Center welcomes both theoretical and empirical papers that (1) apply symbolic interactionist approaches to Internet studies, (2) demonstrate interactive relationships between social interaction and communication technologies as advocated by Couch, (3) develop symbolic interactionist concepts in new directions. Papers will be evaluated based on the quality of (1) mastery of Symbolic Interactionist approaches and concepts and Couchs theses, (2) originality, (3) organization, (4) presentation, and (5) advancement of knowledge. Evaluation will be administered by a Review Committee of four: Dr. Mark D. Johns, Luther College Dr. Katherine M. Clegg, University of Illinois, Chicago Dr. Lori Kendall, SUNY-Purchase Dr. Shing-Ling S. Chen, University of Northern Iowa Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines. Works that are published or accepted for publication are not eligible for award consideration. The top three papers will receive Couch Awards to be presented at the 2002 International Conference of the Association of Internet Researchers at the University of Maastricht (the Netherlands), International Institute of Infonomics. The top paper will be awarded a certificate and a cash prize of $150, runner up will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $100, and a third paper will receive a certificate and a cash prize of $50. All three authors will have the opportunity to present their work at a session of the 2002 A.o.I.R. conference. Perhaps the list can give me some suggestions for discovering more about the politics and ideological approaches of specific search engines. I'm familiar with Hargittai's work on channeling content online as well as Introna and Nissenbaum's research on the general politics of search engines. However, does anyone have any knowledge/references about the specific ideologies and politics that affect how search engines such as google, excite, goaskjeeves and yahoo index particular web sites? Workshop "Main Issues in Designing Interactive Mobile Services" 17 September 2002, Pisa, Italy, in conjunction to Mobile HCI '02 http://giove.cnuce.cnr.it/mobilehci02.html The new 3G communications technology providing mobile access to context-dependent services will strongly enhance and extend communication possibilities in mobility. Therefore, new design approaches, HF studies, behavioural theories and evaluation techniques must arise in order to be able to design interactive mobile artefacts that provide the user with a positive experience. The workshop intends to explore and analyse the main aspects in the design of scenarios of context dependent services for the incoming 3G mobile communication technologies. It is designed as a one-day practical activity with relevant theoretical discussion, ending with a poster design session. Goals ***** Development of a HF research agenda for this specific issue of interaction with mobile devices, to identify and extend the research community in this topic. Moreover, to sensitise designers to the particular interaction-design issues in these kind of communication scenarios (mobile and contextual learning models, interface evaluation, etc.) Background of the perspective participants ****************************************** The workshop is intended for practitioners working in the wireless industry (telcos, device manufacturers, service providers, etc.) and for HF academics and students with interests in human computer interaction, technology-enhanced learning and mobile interaction. Participants will be asked to submit a brief position paper of 2-4 pages, or a reference to a mobile product/project in which they have been involved. Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest in and familiarity with the topic. Detailed description of workshop ******************************** Participants will be invited to choose a format of context-dependent mobile service and hypothesise a scenario of use (mainly when he is 'on the move' - e.g. in a train, using a pocket PC or a mobile phone) that will enhance users' interactive experience with their mobile devices. Once the usage scenario is well defined, participants will required to know (assume) the expectations, limitations and behaviour of mobile users and design appropriate interaction models. Trans-cultural adaptability and ethic aspects will be analysed. Good communication with the service provider is a key factor to add value to the user, possibly involving personalized services. A coerent and relevant multi-channel identity, for example with related website, will be analysed to ensure user's fidelity. Anything about art or artists online will be considered, although we will only be selecting one such chapter. Work on art or artists who make use of the unique properties of the World Wide Web in some way would be particularly welcome. The piece should be 3,500-4,000 words and written in an accessible, introductory style, suitable for undergraduate students. Thank you very much. LAST DATE FOR EMAILING US: 17 June 2002. A FEW DETAILS: The first edition of "Web.Studies" was published in August 2000. Several reviewers have described it as an "excellent" introduction to new media issues for students of media, communications, cyberculture and cultural studies. The website about the book (first edition) is at: http://www.newmediastudies.com/book The publishers, Arnold in the UK and Oxford University Press in the USA, have asked us to prepare a Second Edition for publication in August 2003. The first edition was edited by David Gauntlett (me). This time around I have invited a co-editor aboard -- Ross Horsley, also based at the Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds. The second edition of the book will be a combination of substantially updated versions of the best chapters from the first edition, plus several all-new chapters. The target audience is primarily undergraduates, but of course we would expect postgraduates, academics, and interested other people to learn something from it too. You get a small fee for writing the chapter -- for 3,500 words it would be UK £35, which is around US $52. Obviously that's not much, but most academic journals pay zero, so this is much better (!). Contributors are likely to be academics or PhD students. If you think you can provide the kind of chapter we are looking for, please send a short summary of who you are and what you would be able to cover. Of course we will be happy to answer any questions that potential writers may have.
