Clifford Nass and Byron Reeves out of Stanford University do some interesting work on how humans will sometimes treat computers as people, or at least machines with a personality. This is the first of two messages. For some reason the first post did not go up. Citing online sources. >Give your best effort to provide the reader with a guide to where to find it. And for Internet stuff, the date accessed (or should it be the date posted >to the Web, if avai[l]able?) This is a great example of a 'renversement' brought about by new relations of mediation and distribution. The date produced (which very often may not be known) or the date read? It seems this is a significant difference in the authority of the text (and this 'authority' of the text is marked by its citation in scholarship). It foregrounds the context of the production of the citation while rendering the general 'context' or general historical (given) media background less relevant in an understanding of the governance in knowledge that applies to this field. Scholarship of Internet, ethically and legally, must cite both the date of production of digital files (where known - and if not known this merely indicates the place of further productive scholarship - Internet hermenuetics?) and the date of consumption. The outcome is an institutionalisation of a subjective/objective collective scholarship. The same method can be applied to conventional (scriptural economy) scholarship. Oh, I almost forgot... If the production of knowledge is to be the growth industry we are led to believe it will be, and clearly expect it to be where we have investments in the field, there is an additional complication to help provide endless work for the scholars of the future, particularly those concerned with the heremeneutics of the digital file. Not only the date of production and consumption of the online work must be cited, but the date, in specific instances, where these instances cast light upon the politics of the production of knowledge, and insight into the 'megla-media' aspirations of particular scholars, of erasure of files must also be cited. One suspects feminism(s) might extend their inquiry to The Archive to extend the domains of feminist inquiry to the very basis of the University and of Scholarship. I love scholarship. This workshop brings together teachers, administrators, support staff, and 7th11th grade students to learn and develop critical approaches to using appropriate technologies in the classroom. _Approaches to Integrating Computers into Writing Classrooms (CIWICAIC)_ In its seventeenth year, CIWICAIC provides a space for participants to explore the thoughtful integration of technology in composition classrooms, by examining the value of such tools as networks, online course management tools, electronic conferencing, composition software, lab management, and the World Wide Web. _Integrating New Media into Writing Classrooms (CIWICNM)_ CIWICNM participants learn graphics and authoring software for composing multimedia texts. They also use those textsas well as student- and commercially-produced multimediaas grounds for discussing and developing compositional and rhetorical approaches for teaching both the interpretation and the development of new media texts in writing-intensive classrooms. _Individual Projects (CIWICIP)_ CIWICIP is an institute for past CIWIC participants who want to take on a more focused project. Past participants have worked on designing distance-education courses that use email, the World Wide Web, and Instructional Television; and designing a Web-based student publication realm using Perl, JavaScript, and CGI scripting. CIWIC staff provide intense, one-on-one support. DATES AND FACILITIES CIWICECAC runs June 921, 2002 and is a one-week onsite workshop, followed by a one-week virtual workshop, and year-round online support offered by the ECAC support staff. CIWICAIC, CIWICNM, and CIWICIP run concurrently for two weeks, June 1728, 2002, consisting of 10 six-hour days with optional lunch and evening sessions. All four institutes use a state-of-the-art computer facility, Michigan Techs Center for Computer-Assisted Language Instruction (CCLI). In addition to attending regularly scheduled sessions, participants have 24-hour access to the lab/classroom for additional explorations and practice. Cynthia Selfe, Anne Wysocki, Richard Selfe, and a team of knowledgeable student consultants provide one-on-one instructionon both Macintosh and IBM platformsin developing and using applications suited for participants own classrooms and Writing/English programs. Here's a belated response (I was at a conference) to the debate over referencing URLs which may disappear. It strikes me that we face the same thing in the print world, especially for conference papers, reports, less-famous newspapers, and short-lived journals. Even books may disappear (national libraries are not all comprehensive, and not all countries have one.) Nevertheless, we cite them and hope the reader can find them. Altho the probability of URLs disappearing is higher in some fields -- but probably not all -- I think the same rules apply, Give your best effort to provide the reader with a guide to where to find it. And for Internet stuff, the date accessed (or should it be the date posted to the Web, if avaiable?) A problem rarely faced in the print world, except for the Great Soviet Encylopedia.
