Apologies for cross-posting The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation Postdoctoral Research Associate Starting Immediately The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Candidates should possess a strong interest in broadening career development for PhD students. This is a full-time position for an 18-month grant, located at the Foundation's headquarters in Princeton. The position will contribute greatly to the Foundation's efforts to promote innovations in doctoral education, and it reports to a Program Officer in the Office of Program Development. The candidate will be responsible for developing a methodology to assess innovative approaches to training doctoral students in the arts and sciences for careers outside of academe as well as in teaching and research. As the primary lead for this effort, the candidate will interact with the leadership, graduate faculty and doctoral students at major research universities, as well as with leaders in non-academic sectors of the economy. Chief Responsibilities: Design a method for analyzing the efficacy of alternative approaches to the preparation of PhDs; conduct research using appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods; organize and coordinate the administrative aspects of the project; develop and maintain a database of best practices; plan and organize a best practices conference; prepare manuscripts (reports, presentations, white papers, articles) and promotional material through production and release; promote the project through various media (a web site, listservs, etc.); and participate in efforts to cultivate outside funding. The ideal candidate will have: * A PhD or equivalent in experience, preferably in a discipline of the Arts and Sciences, especially the social sciences (e.g., economics, political science, sociology, anthropology or others), or public policy, higher education administration/leadership; * Experience with educational program assessment and evaluation, preferably with programs at the graduate level * Applied research and/or gov/private sector experience a plus * Excellent organizational and administrative skills * Keen interest in improving graduate education processes and outcomes * Ability to manage complex, fast-paced projects individually and as a team member * Strong desire to learn the world of grant writing, grant making and fellowships * Polished oral and written communication skills * Proficiency with standard office computing and database management Compensation is competitive, commensurate with experience, and well above the national average for post-doc positions. Folks, I'm putting together a roundtable for AIR 3.0 (aoir.org/2002) which as most of you know will be in Maastricht on October 13-16, 2002 and whose deadline for submission as most of you may wish to forget is, eeks, February 15. I have assembled a number of participants who will discuss RESEARCH GAPS in the field of Internet studies. We are interested in discussing not necessarily what has been done, but rather what hasn't been done, what needs to be done, and what directions can and should be taken by today's and tomorrow's Internet scholars. I am looking for a few more participants to fill out our roundtable. In particular, I am interested in someone who can speak to research gaps in: a) scholarship from outside the USA and English-speaking countries; b) issues of cultural diversity, including race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, and class; and c) questions regarding 'next generation' Internet (cellular phone-based messaging, massively multiplayer games, etc). We are looking for folks who feel comfortable talking about The Big Picture, folks who have a rich grasp upon (and opinions about) where we've been as an emerging field and where we should be going. Dear Ben & others, you asked what 'personal goals' like getting status and making contacts have to do with structural properties of e-groups: the point is that structural properties of electronic groups can influence whether active participation in electronic discussions can be a successful means for a researcher to obtain status or to make new contacts. We do not have to regard a researcher's goal to make new contacts or to gain reputation as personal in nature. These are social goals that are induced by the research system and its career system. If we assume that obtaining reputation and making contacts, to some extent, are intrumental for every researcher's career advancement, the question is which properties of electronic groups link the pursuing of these goals to active participation in e- discussions. An example: Let's assume that a researcher's active participation in e-discussions is driven by the wish to obtain reputation in the academic system. We could then expect that academic mailing lists that are embedded in well-integrated research communities with face-to-face meetings stimulate active participation more than academic mailing list consisting of a less integrated community of researchers, since in the latter you cannot obtain much reputation that is helpful for your career advancement. The idea that a hope for reciprocity may stimulate participation in discussions of electronic group can be traced back to <paraindent><param>out</param><color><param>0100,0100,0100</param><FontFamily><param>Times New Roman</param>Thorn BK, Connolly T. 1987. Indeed this is making the rounds online, and I received a hard copy via old-fashioned post about six years ago. CMC is quite good a mediating older scams. BTW, the breast cancer site and the hungersite--while not scams, per se--encourage people to solict by email traffic for their websites, ostensibly to help raise money for those causes. However, both sites are run by a for-profit company with dubious accounting practices. I can send my clips on it if anyone is interested. --g. This is a very welcome and an important statement concerning social inclusion and particpation, taking into account r+d in our universities, in industry as well as, obviously, the public sector. It is a helpfully misaddressed email. One that surely should not in any case have been confined to the executive of Aoir. I would be extremely interested to know the present demographics of AoIR, if these are known. Even a rough estimate will do.
