Hello, my name is Lachlan Brown and I do Cultural Studies. Anyone got a problem with that? My research based at Goldsmiths College, University of London, traced some of the meanings of technology as a symptom of broader social and cultural forces among several producer and consumer constituents of Internet from March 1993 through to mid-September 2001. The research was carried out with respect to the fields of ideas, aesthetics and belief; policy, governance and politics; regulation, legislation and the law in a number of institutional locations appropriate to each field: early digital cultural art, publishing and idea contexts; educational contexts; industry contexts. The methodology involved a participant action research that included developing an early online publication called 'difference engine', teaching, and work in the industry. This research was conducted part time within the constraints of work and family life. I live in Toronto, Canada, where I worked as editor prior to beginning research into the field at Goldsmiths College, University of London and spend a couple of months per year in London, England. Having completed my research I am now implementing a non-profit online publishing initiative as well as a commercial publishing company focused in arts and education. Contributions are invited from all relevant fields including history of arts, architecture, history, popular music, the media, advertising and PR, sociology, economics, political lobbying, WTO-GATS, food, education, linguistics and others. Publication of the proceedings is intended. The Conference on Cultural Imperialism (working title) will begin on Thursday october 17, 2002, with diner and perhaps a first evening session. We will have two working days, Friday 18 and Saturday 19, and participants will depart on Sunday 20 october after breakfast. The venue is Robert Schuman House, Trier, a well-equipped new conference center above the city of Trier where participants will also stay overnight. At this moment we think about a more symposium-like beginning (Friday) aiming at sorting out the multiple facets of cultural imperialism and pulling strings together, and a public event on Saturday aiming at media coverage. We will have three blocks for discussion: (1) Cultural imperialism in history,(2) present cultural imperialism, its different aspects, working mechanisms and effects, and (3) what are alternatives (including European positions in WTO, IMF etc.). Workling languages will be German, English and French, with simultaneous translation. A maximum of 50 participants are expected from all parts of the world. We will try our best to raise funds for travel refunding and for hosting participants. Hello, I'm a doctoral student at Pepperdine University and am kicking up the dust trying to get started on my dissertation. Originally I was going to research online friendship evolution, but am now looking at the more meatier subject of how friendship affects online cooperation (in learning and working situations). My chair has pointed me toward Peter Kollack as a resource for online cooperation and Warren Sack for mapping Usenet... I've read much of the work of Steve Jones, Nancy Baym and others that frequent this list. I'd love to receive any other resources that might be helpful, particularly in the area of online cooperation, to which I am a bit new. A few people asked me to share the answers to my question on newsgroup analysis, so here they go (although these are more questions than answers): 1. Several people shared links to Network analysis software, I have used this software for email but I still have to find an useful way to use it on newsgroups because most of the postings are to the group as a whole. 2. Off-the-shelf qualitative data analysis: great but all of the packages from Sage can't work with more than 500 records (unless you are willing to wait 20 min to rename a document). I have 3000 (which is small as far as newsgroups go) Any suggestions Joao
