Hi everyone, I would like to invite interested students to an information session about our Ph.D. program at the Department of Communication at UMass Amherst. We expect to admit seven students with full funding for Fall 2024, and *the application deadline is January 2, 2024*. The information session will be over Zoom and take place on Friday, November 3, 2023, from 10 AM to 11 AM (EST). On Monday, 23 October from 11AM-12:30PM EDT/UTC+4: "Building Equitable and Sustainable Game Development Education" Workshop led by Kenzie Gordon (University of Alberta), Dr. Sean Gouglas (University of Alberta), Dr. Alison Harvey (York University), Vishal Sooknananl (Western University), Dr. Johanna Weststar (Western University), and Dr. Jennifer Whitson (University of Waterloo). With recent waves of layoffs, high-profile workplace harassment cases, and a notoriously short career length for gender minorities and people of colour, the transition of new workers into the game industry involves navigating a spate of barriers to equity and success that have been understudied in academic research. The First Three Years is an ongoing longitudinal study of graduates of game programs in Canada and the United States, following the journey of 207 students as they move into the game industry. In this workshop, our research team will summarise the primary challenges students have identified in their game programs. This summary includes equity and diversity issues inherent in common curricular practices such as the efficacy of capstone courses and internships, the inclusion of crunch-like practices in the classroom, the systematic failure to inform students of actual workplace conditions, and the mismatch between student preparation and industry hiring practices. Afterwards, participants will address whether/how these problems manifest in their own institutions, and what solutions might improve equity outcomes for students seeking careers in games.? 2. On Tuesday, 31 October from 3-4PM EDT/UTC+4: "The Case for Paratopian Design" lecture by Dr Rilla Khaled (Concordia University). And what if we could do so through interactions with familiar digital interfaces set in alternative presents and near futures? The work I will discuss sits at the intersection between the design traditions of speculative and critical design on the one hand, and the philosophies and best practices of game design, playful media and interaction design on the other. It turns out, though, that an arranged marriage between these traditions produces unusual offspring. In this talk, grounded in examples including outsourcing religious tolerance to technological solutions, Indigenous Hawaiians undertaking space travel, matrimonial websites from the near future, and flirtatious AI chatbot therapists, I make the case for paratopian design, which is neither utopian nor dystopian, but proposes paradigm shifts that invite us to reconceptualise and reconsider the building blocks of "here" & "now".

The 20th International Conference on Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things (DCOSS-IoT 2024) will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The conference is always co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and by the IEEE Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP). The conference was previously known as DCOSS. Starting in 2023, the event is broadening its scope beyond sensor networks to include smart systems in general and the Internet of Things (IoT). The updated name is "Distributed Computing in Smart Systems and the Internet of Things" (DCOSS-IoT). In the last few years, we have witnessed significant growth in the use of IoT and distributed sensor systems in several application areas, including smart transportation, smart energy systems, smart homes and buildings, smart healthcare, and environmental monitoring. For smart sensor systems to truly become useful and pervasive, we need to address several research challenges, including the tight integration of sensing and machine intelligence, reliable and efficient networking, interoperability and scalability, the need for dependable autonomy, interaction with humans, and important aspects of security, privacy and trust. Call for participation: public interest AI networking event at AoIR 2023

Dear Fellow Researchers, We would like to invite anyone attending AoIR 2023 and interested in the topic of public interest tech/AI to a transatlantic networking event that we will be hosting (as a pre-conference workshop) on October 18th. We—the research group on public interest AI at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin <https://www.hiig.de/en/project/public-interest-ai/>—have been focused on ways to develop and implement AI in order to serve the public interest. We have also been seeing an increase in the number of projects that aim to do just this. However, many researchers working on this topic don’t know each other or these other projects yet. MIT Press is delighted to announce the publication of “Mainstreaming and Game Journalism” by David B. Nieborg & Maxwell Foxman in their Playful Thinking series. The book is available at bookstores and as an open access PDF: https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5657/Mainstreaming-and-Game-Journ… Mainstreaming and Game Journalism addresses both the history and current practice of game journalism, along with the roles writers and industry play in conveying that the medium is a “mainstream” form of entertainment. Through interviews with reporters, the authors examine the bumpy process of what they think of as “mainstreaming,” which encompasses three overlapping factors. First, for games to become mainstream, they need to become more ubiquitous through broader media coverage. Second, an increase in ludic literacy, or how-to play games, determines whether that greater visibility translates into accessibility. Third, the mainstreaming of games must gain cultural legitimacy. The fact that games are more visible does little if only a few people take them seriously or deem them worthy of attention. Ultimately, Mainstreaming and Game Journalism provocatively questions whether games ever will—or even should—gain widespread cultural acceptance. ***Apologies for cross-postings*** Call for Workshop Proposals The 19th Annual ICA Mobile Communication Pre-Conference 2024 Mobilizing Communication Rights for Humans, More-than Humans, and Beyond Location: HOTA, Home of the Arts (135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, QLD 4217, Australia). Date: Wednesday 19 June 2024, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Deadline for Submissions: 15 January 2024. Mobile communication went from being new and revolutionary to a taken-for-granted and deeply embedded part of everyday life. However, very rarely has it been considered a human right, despite the fact that mobile communication has been co-extensive and deeply wound into the evolution of human rights. Whether related with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights’ Article 19, the rights of children and persons with disabilities, information, cultural, and sexual rights, or the rights of the environment and species—including the rights of the biosphere and more-than-humans--, mobile communication has offered platforms, ecosystems, cultures, practices, tools, and assemblages that enriched lives and worlds. This pre-conference considers mobile communication as a human right, while also recognizing ways in which mobile media use can suppress human rights. In the current post-smartphone era, in which mobile communication is much more pervasive and widespread, connecting humans, spaces, and things, we witness the perpetuation of enduring injustices, inequalities, and threats that emerge and develop in conjunction with the use of mobile communication devices. And in the ‘transition’, who sets the terms for mobile equalities and sustainable, inclusive futures? And what about the human right to ‘disconnect’? We invite scholars from diverse disciplinary, methodological, and theoretical backgrounds to join us as we explore the emerging trends and practices that connect mobile communication and human rights. We welcome a diversity of scholars at different stages in their careers: Ph.D. students, postdocs, junior faculty, along with more senior scholars to consider these issues in an open, informal, and conversational setting. Practitioners in the field are also encouraged to apply. Similar to previous editions, the pre-conference will be organized in the form of several interactive Blue-Sky workshop sessions where teams of scholars will present ideas at various levels of gestation. We welcome research ideas that are just being formed, open questions to the field, as well as the sharing of research results, as long as they are presented in an interactive manner. We also welcome explorations of practical projects, such as mobile applications, mobile media artworks, and mobile games. This pre-conference is designed to cultivate a supportive and integrated community of mobile communication thinkers. Workshop themes can focus on any dimension of mobile communication, including, but not limited to: Uses of mobiles for activating or violating human rights; Mobile theory/methods; Mobile communication and activism; Photography, mobile media art, and entertainment; Mobile communication in organizations; Mobile privacy; Well-being; AI, algorithms, and robotification; Mobile social networks and location-based games; Parenting and surveillance with mobiles; mHealth; mLearning; Mobile technology use by the elderly, children, and/or minority/racialized groups; Mobile communication in the Global South; Urban mobilities and migration; Mobile journalism. In short, we are open to a wide variety of themes associated with the social uses of mobile communication and mobile media, especially ideas related to emerging trends and practices. Guidelines for Submissions: Each in-person workshop will be allocated a time slot of 60 minutes and should include “hands-on” or active audience participation. A workshop will typically be organized by four or five participants, but we will accept more or fewer organizers. Pre-conference attendees will be able to attend multiple workshops throughout the day.
