Dear colleagues, We are pleased to share the call for papers from the international conference “Big Tech as an Actor of Global Security and Geopolitical Conflicts”, organized by the Center for Interdisciplinary Media Research and Analysis (CARISM, University Paris-Panthéon-Assas) and the Centre Internet et Société (CNRS), with the Strategic Research Institute of the Ecole Militaire(IRSEM) as a scientific partner. The conference will be held in English on May 2 and 3, 2024 at the Centre Panthéon in Paris. This conference aims to foster a reflection on the roles of large digital companies in matters of international security. Their services having become arenas of controversy, these firms are the subject of conflicts between powers and are even, in several cases, security actors, on their own initiative or in conjunction with public authorities. In order to bring together the various relevant approaches on this subject, communication proposals may fall within international relations, political science, information and communication sciences, security studies, science and technology studies (STS), and political economy. Please forward before 26 October. We will notify you with the outcome of your abstract by November 27. Cultural Production and Generative Artificial Intelligence - A matchpoint for creativity? Generative AI has recently received strong attention especially as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion models are increasingly integrated into different digital services, such as Microsoft’s Bing, Google’s search functionality and many more. Beyond the obvious responses surrounding the ethical boundaries, or its encroachment against creativity and copyright, there are, we argue, more significant areas that require scholarly inquiry. In many ways, this is a return to the late 2000’s debates that surround the role of digital media technologies in supporting innovation, while also protecting the rights of creators within their industries. Yet, these emerging discussions move beyond supporting innovation and towards the potential impact on the industries that stand to flourish or perish as generative AI models become more intelligent and user-friendly. How then, can generative AI (even from the audience perspective) be integrated into the creative process in ethical and innovative ways? Journalists, tech-futurists, policymakers and scholars all question the risks of generative AI. But in the same moment, there are also examples of artists encouraging uses of generative AI for co-creation with fans/users. This suggests a broader approach towards generative AI beyond technological determinism and one that genuinely seeks to integrate the benefits of this emerging media technology for an improved and informed society. In addition to discussing the ethical use of AI, it is equally important to discuss industry practices in concert with how it has been used, and how creators or users make sense of their experiences with this technology. Based on these provocations, this panel aims to extend our knowledge of generative AI within the creative space. Beyond the scope of ethics, we incorporate the creative use of generative AI alongside its moral and legal implications. It emphasises the parameters of artificially generated cultural production under this context to highlight how we can incorporate generative AI without prohibiting the creativity of humanity, and how that might generate flourishing ways to spark additional creativity. The TikTok Cultures Research Network (TCRN) is excited to announce our second online satellite roundtable event, "Latin American Cultures on TikTok" or "Culturas Latinoamericanas en TikTok," featuring bilingual availability in Spanish and English through live translation. Book announcement: Reconstructions of Gender and Information Technology: Women Doing IT for Themselves

Dear AoIR members, I am thrilled to share the news about my new book: Reconstructions of Gender and Information Technology: Women Doing IT for Themselves, about how women find their way into tech careers. This open access book explores what makes women decide to pursue a career in male-dominated fields such as information technology (IT). It reveals how women experience gendered stereotypes but also how they bypass, negotiate, and challenge such stereotypes, reconstructing gender-technology relations in the process. Using the example of Norway to illuminate this challenge in Western countries, the book includes a discussion of the "gender equality paradox", where gender equality exists in parallel with gender segregation in fields such as IT. The discussion illustrates how the norm of gender equality in some cases hinders rather than promotes efforts to increase women's participation in technology-related roles. After each session, the Society for the Philosophy of Technology (SPT) generates a volume featuring the Lifetime Achievement Award winner. For 2023, the winner was Langdon Winner. Myself and Dr. Darryl Cressman (Maastricht) will be receiving submissions and editing the collection called *Arrangments of Power: Traving Langdon Winner's Legacy Within and Beyond the Philosophy of Technology*. To celebrate this achievement, Springer Press will publish an essay collection inspired by Langdon Winner's work. As the title indicates, Winner challenged philosophers, social scientists, and political theorists to reconsider the neutrality of artifacts and the traditional notion of politics. His work examining the persuasive and influential nature of artifacts and social orders continues to help students, new and old, to reimagine these relationships as complex melodies of socio-political negotiations. By rendering these tensions visible, Winner formats politics as arrangements of power and provides an opening for others to remix the status quo. For this volume, we want to represent the breadth of Winner’s influence, both in content and length of time. In this sense, we are particularly interested in featuring scholarship that hails not only from philosophy, STS, and political theory but also music studies, internet research, gender & sexuality studies, design studies, engineering, critical race studies, indigenous studies, and beyond, as it relates to technology and technological artifacts. Further, we encourage all career-stages of scholars to submit work, from graduate students to advanced researchers to show the ways Winner’s work is interpreted and enacted. Apologies for cross-posting! --- CFP: ICA 2024 PANEL SUBMISSION ‘CUMULATIVE PATTERNS AND EFFECTS IN ONLINE OPINION FORMATION’ We cordially invite those who study online discussions and opinion formation on social media to submit an abstract to the prospective panel for the ICA Annual conference of 2024 at Gold Coast, Australia, on June 20-24, 2024. The panel focuses on cumulative patterns and effects in online opinion formation and the factors that shape opinion cumulation, both discursive, structural, and contextual (including platform affordances and outer socio-political contexts). In our approach, we follow the concept of cumulative deliberation (Bodrunova 2021, 2023) that sees opinion formation on social media as primarily non-deliberative, and sees the latter more as normal than as negatively deviant from the classic views on public sphere. We also see the temporal dimension of opinion formation as crucial and focus on linking temporal patterns of opinion formation to patterns of user participation (including participation of political and media actors), polarization of views, discursive features of online talk, parasocial relations that emerge in time, dissipative and viral logics etc. We try to show that emergence of online influencing, majority/minority formation similar to ‘spirals of silence’, echo chambering and other effects are manifestations of the cumulative, rather than rational deliberative, nature of online opinions, and aspire to discussing the new socially-normative and democratic dimensions of the cumulative part of public deliberation. The topics for the panel are (not limited to) the following ones: • Detection of cumulative patterns in opinion formation: Methods and suggestions • Negativity vs. opinion cumulation: The effects of online (in)civility • Network structures and opinion cumulation: Is there an independent ‘network logic’? • Time in opinion cumulation: Discussion outbursts, polarization, reputation crises, cascades, and viral spread of information seen in time • Opinion cumulation vs. connective action: The thresholds – from protest spillovers to emergence of social action • Affect vs. opinion cumulation: Affective publics and their inner patterns • Normativity in cumulative deliberation: Distinguishing between natural user behavior and strategic distortions • Previously known as ‘the spiral of silence’: Effects and micro-effects in opinion cumulation • Cumulation of publics: From ad hoc discussion milieus to transnational diaspora • Contextual dependence of opinion cumulation: Comparing patterns of opinion emergence across media systems and cultures The abstracts of 150 to 200 words (in free format) should be sent to Svetlana Bodrunova (s.bodrunova(a)spbu.ru) by October 24, 2024; notifications on inclusion to the panel will be sent out by October 27.
