Call for #AoIR2025 and #AoIR2026 Annual Conference Host

The Executive Committee of the Association of Internet Researchers is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from prospective Conference Hosts for the annual meetings of the Association for October 2025 and 2026. With this call, AoIR will return to our regular rotation schedule: the 2025 conference will take place outside of North America and Europe, and the 2026 conference will take place in North America. EOIs are due to the AoIR Executive Committee by July 18, 2023. EOIs will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee, who will then gauge feasibility through a series of follow-up discussions with proposers. Proposers for the 2025 conference will be informed of decisions regarding conference hosting by September 2023. The AoIR membership will be informed of the 2025 conference location during the AGM at AoIR2023 in Philadelphia. The AoIR conference draws an international group of 500-700 researchers and practitioners to present and discuss work at the cutting edge in understanding the individual, social, political, economic and cultural aspects of the internet and related technologies. The Conference Host Committee is a regional group of scholars that may be part of the same or different organisations. They are also invited to propose a Program Chair. The Program Chair oversees the submissions and review process of papers, panels, workshops, and preconferences, and schedules the conference sessions. The Program Chair may be a member of the organization that acts as Conference Host. Members of the Conference Host Committee should have a strong existing connection to the Association of Internet Researchers. Serving on the Conference Hosting committee is a large commitment. The role of the Conference Host and committee is to make contributions to the conference theme and call for papers, identify keynote and plenary speakers, plan and provide crucial local knowledge and connections, and oversee region-specific fundraising (where possible, provide venue space at cost or in kind). AoIR will assist with the practical conference planning, including negotiating contracts with hotels, meeting venues, catering, and the like, and will partner with the host committee on many of the administrative details of the conference, such as reception and meal planning, AV and wifi provision, and exhibitor displays. Organizations or consortia that may be interested in serving as Conference Host should contact President Tama Leaver at prez (at) aoir.org by 18 July 2023 with a brief expression of interest. The EOI should include the following and be no longer than 5 double spaced pages: 1. the individuals and organization(s) involved, and their proposed roles; 2. the connection of proposers to internet research and to AoIR; 3. a description of any prior experiences proposers have had with organizing or hosting a conference, and the roles played in this; 4. an argument to support the proposed conference location, especially with respect to ease of travel for AoIR’s multinational community of conference participants; 5. initial thoughts on local venue options (AoIR has in the past held the annual conference at a variety of venue spaces including universities, conference centers, and hotels); 6. prospective conference dates, keeping in mind any major local, national, and international holidays, semester schedules, or other aspects that might affect the timing of the conference; 7. a firm indication of whether you will be attending AoIR2023 in Philadelphia and are available to meet for further discussions about hosting AoIR2025 or AoIR2026. AoIR 2023 Dissertation Award Announcement

We are delighted to announce the winner of the 2023 Dissertation Award! This year, the committee evaluated 38 dissertations. It was a long and challenging task, made even harder by the exceptional work submitted by all the candidates. After careful deliberation, the committee has reached the following decisions: The winner of the 2023 award is *Tuğçe Bidav* of Maynooth University for her dissertation, "Global Platform, Local Labour: Precarious YouTubing in Ireland and Turkey". Congratulations, Tuğçe! Bidav's dissertation offers a unique perspective by comparing creative digital labor in two countries, Turkey and Ireland. This comparative analysis makes significant contributions to internet research by situating creator labor in relation to platform affordances, regulatory frameworks, and diverse geopolitical contexts. It challenges Western-centric understandings of YouTube and provides theories grounded in localized experiences, drawing upon data from underrepresented national contexts and shedding light on creators from peripheral digital cultures. The dissertation also employs an innovative mixed methods approach that spans multiple disciplines. Tuğçe’s work is truly deserving of our recognition. The committee has also awarded an Honorable Mention to *Julian Posada*, a student at the University of Toronto when he wrote, "The Coloniality of Data Work: Power and Inequality in Outsourced Data Production for Machine Learning". Posada's work examines the working conditions of outsourced workers in the AI industry, with a specific focus on lower-income countries in South America. This focus makes a significant contribution to internet research by decolonizing theory and research, and bringing underrepresented linguistic communities to the forefront of scholarly debate. Furthermore, the dissertation makes policy suggestions, further extending its contribution. Posada's work employs an intriguing and novel approach by integrating multiple disciplines and methodologies in service of his research. Both of these dissertations make remarkable contributions to the field of internet research, addressing new problems (and, particularly, the theme of digital labor) through the lens of marginalized cases, and with innovative approaches. They impressed the award committee greatly, and will undoubtedly have a substantial impact on the field. AoIR is deeply grateful to Rafael Grohmann, Christian Ritter, Chikezie Uzuegbunam, and especially Raquel Recuero, Chair of the Dissertation Award Committee, for the hard work that they invested in this process. (In the spirit of transparency, we note that no committee member evaluated dissertations written by students from their own institution.)

Call for Papers Special issue of Feminist Encounters on ‘Digital Activisms and Intersectionality in Context.’ Spring 2026 In the past two decades, there has been a great deal of visibility for marginalised populations from many parts of the world via social media platforms (whether through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Tumblr, YouTube, and other platforms). We have seen protest movements focused on gender, race and caste issues, for instance, utilising these privately-owned communication technology infrastructures to build networks, reach global audiences, and demonstrate the influence of digital "publics," "contrapublics," "alternetworks," "counterpublics," and so on. At the same time, these platforms are equally accessible to trolls and groups that use them to spread hate speech, fake news, propaganda, misinformation, and divisive rhetoric in the name of freedom of speech. Misogyny and cooptation of feminist languages of choice happens side-by-side with brand-feminisms and feminist activist callouts. Oppressive governments also use social media surveillance to silence dissent, enforce bans, and suppress opposition voices. In this seemingly chaotic digital space, activists, influencers, and advocates attempt to simultaneously speak to their local, regional, national audiences while broadcasting outwards transnationally to garner solidarity and support. These outcries, callouts, and protests in digital publics create nuanced awareness around the particularities of social inequalities in the regions from which they originate. Therefore, we invite submissions that examine the cultural and political contexts of digital activism and how they shape practices, strategies, and considerations of activism and online engagement. We welcome papers that nuance intersectionality as theory or method and those that deploy situated, contextual, intersectionalities to flesh out how activisms and solidarities can be forged based on shifting temporal, social, and geopolitical dynamics. We encourage contributors to deep-dive into how digital activisms conceptualise intersectionality within and beyond activists' contexts and the nuances made visible in activists' use of intersectionality as critical praxis or analytical strategy. While this is not a mandatory condition for submitted papers, we welcome co-authorship across an academic-activist spectrum, caste contexts, racial contexts, or global north and global south contexts. We also encourage submitting authors to explain how these collaborations occurred. Dear all, I am writing as part of the editorial board of Digital Culture and Education<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/> (DCE) as we enter our 5th year running the journal. In that time we have put out 6 standard issues of the journal (including our latest ongoing edition<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/volume-14-4>), 4 special issues, and our COVID conversations<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/covid-19-conversations> with researchers from around the world. In this time we have tried to play with the form and format of journal articles, and continue to push for new and creative ways of sharing research. For example, our special issue exploring 'shelfies'<https://www.digitalcultureandeducation.com/volume-14-2> played around with the format and form of selfies and shelfies, producing exciting and thought-provoking art, writing, and audio recordings. As a proudly fully free and open access journal we believe in the importance of developing and challenging academic writing and scholarship, and in highlighting thoughtful and engaging work around the overlaps between technology, education, and cultural issues. This is only possible with the support of the team around us, and with the continued support of our associate editors and the excellent community of digital researchers as a whole. With this in mind we are currently seeking statements of interest in joining the board of DCE as associate editor. The success of DCE is dependent upon the high quality of its papers and its reviewers, upon its relevance to leading researchers and professionals in the field as an important site for publishing and encountering new work, and its capacity to nurture new and emerging scholarship, ideas and practice. This is a collaborative endeavour in which the editorial board plays a critical role. As associate editors we would invite you to: * Continue to improve the quality of papers published in DCE through regular, high quality reviewing for the journal - We are aiming to ask associate editors to review at least two papers per year. * To develop the field by proposing and taking a lead in editing special issues in emerging areas of interest. We have been notably successful in this area over the past 5 years, with another special issue currently in the works, and would be keen to work with you on issues you are interested in pitching. * To share in the debate as to the futures of the field and of the journal, and to provide constructive challenge and advice to the editors by joining at least one editorial board meeting per year. * To broaden and encourage the community of scholars contributing to DCE by actively promoting the journal to colleagues and within professional communities, including via social media (where appropriate) * To generate engagement with networks of people in relevant fields by encouraging them to submit articles and special issues on significant topics * To share the activities related to the above fairly across the Board membership Your involvement in DCE is absolutely central to the development of the journal, and we hope to the development of the field more broadly. Does the model perform accurately enough? Is the error rate low enough? Such questions of ‘good enough’ are at the very core of the process of Machine Learning (ML) evaluation and can also be considered a highly political process in the development of ML systems. There is already a growing interest in the political implications of ML in relation to, for example, dataset construction and the political capacities of specific ML models or foundational algorithmic techniques. However, there has been less focus on the politics of evaluation practices and techniques in ML. To further explore this issue, we invite contributions to a workshop on ‘The Politics of Machine Learning Evaluation’ at the University of Amsterdam in November 2023. The aim of this workshop is to collectively engage with conceptualisations and the methodologies of how to study ML evaluation techniques. Nominations are open to members and non-members of LaborTech. We welcome self-nominations especially, but also nominations from publishers, colleagues, and others familiar with the projects. We encourage submissions from women, people of color, queer communities, and those from the global south. *Prizes* Winners receive a small cash award and a certificate (which we hope to expand further in years ahead, as we are still a growing nonprofit organization :). In addition, we offer our infrastructural supports at LaborTech to promote visibility of your projects: by connecting with our 400+ expert members; by making a video of winners and distributing it both in and outside of our network to enhance public attention and exposure; and by creating a space and opportunity for sharing your work at out end of year virtual celebration. BOOK AND GRADUATE STUDENT PAPER AWARDS *Submission Details* Please submit the following items in English to labortechresearchnetwork(a)gmail.com: 1. An electronic version in PDF format (contact us if only print form is available for books) 2. The author's contact email address 3. A one-page nomination letter stating the significance and contribution of the work 4. For Graduate Student Paper, please also include in the cover letter: a) when the PhD was started and, if applicable, granted b) if the paper was published, then state when and in what journal c) if co-authored with faculty/advisors/other PhDs, please include a paragraph attesting to the student's dominant role in generating the paper (such as working on its theoretical components, doing the research, and writing it up). In addition, we ask that the cover letter is signed (digitally, or otherwise) by all co-authors, so that they are aware of this submission. *Book Award Criteria* - Monographs only (no edited volumes or anthologies) - Multiple authors accepted - Published in the last three years (2021-23) *Graduate Student Paper Award Criteria* - Written by students currently enrolled in a graduate program or who have graduated in 2023 - Single-authored pieces are preferred, but co-authored pieces will be accepted with the above conditions in Submission Details - Papers may be published within the last three years (2021-23) or unpublished - Page length: 25-40 pages, double-spaced SOCIAL JUSTICE AWARD *Submission details* - Fill out this online form, which includes a few short questions of 400-700 words each, regarding the significance and contribution of your social justice activities - Please submit all items in English. If you have a submission in another language, contact us and we'll attempt to find a translator in our group. *Criteria* - Those who are interfacing with technology in the course of their organizing, or who are organizing against inequitable technologies, in the context of labor, feminism, anti-racism, transnationalism struggles. This may include: - tech workers - labor organizers, whether in unions or other workers' associations feminist, immigrant, community, and ethnic rights activists scholar-activists. For this, we are not looking for purely academic work (i.e., scholars who are studying activism), but rather those who are participating in activism themselves, or who are promoting collaborations between activists and scholars. people creating design alternatives for social justice, like engineers and designers - Open to individuals, small groups, and if appropriate, organizations - Focus will be on a particular campaign or project that is done with the aim of social justice regarding labor and/or technology. These projects may be broad (such as educating the public on a social justice issue) or specific (such as organizing a protest for higher wages). They may use a variety of strategies (e.g., art, design, social media, marches and strikes, policy interventions, etc.). We'd like to honor activists who, through these projects, have developed novel approaches or who are pioneers in the fight for more equitable relations of technology and/or labor.
