Dear colleagues, We are thrilled to announce the publication of the edited book Internet Vulgarities in China: Cultures, Governance and Politics, edited by Jian Xu (Deakin University) and Dino Ge Zhang (City University of Hong Kong). The book has been published by Routledge as part of its Asian Visual Cultures series. https://www.routledge.com/Internet-Vulgarities-in-China-Cultures-Governance… The book is the first comprehensive study to critically examine the cultures, governance and politics of internet vulgarities in Chinese society. Comprising twelve chapters, the authors present empirically rich case studies to explore the nature, regulation and evolution of the internet cultural products, vernacular internet cultures and subcultural online communities which have been officially deemed ‘vulgar’ by the state, official media and policy documents. >From ‘vulgar’ online music, internet literature, memes, web dramas, influencers, video games to online fandoms, this timely book demonstrates that the disciplinary power of China’s ‘anti-vulgarity’ campaigns stems from the state’s strategic use of the ambiguous concept of ‘vulgarity’ to judge and regulate the aesthetic and ethical dimensions of popular digital media cultures. This process of turning language into law—a form of ‘linguistification of rule’—functions as a key technique of digital and cultural governance, ensuring that these cultures evolve in accordance with the ideological, moral and cultural values of the party-state. The book will make a significant contribution to the fields of China’s digital media studies, popular culture studies, internet and cultural governance. It is an essential resource for scholars, researchers and students seeking a critical understanding of China’s digital media cultures and its governance and politics. Hey AoIR, The 4S Conference will be here in Toronto this year, October 7-10, and I’m organizing an open panel on Worker-led Techno-futures. I would like to invite you to read the abstract below and submit a 250-word abstract by April 30. There are also many other excellent panels that have been accepted, which you can check on the 4S website. https://www.4sonline.org/accepted_open_panels_toronto.php Worker-Led Techno-Futures Organizer: Rafael Grohmann Whether through social movements, labor unions, cooperatives, or solidarity-based collective arrangements, workers are actively imagining and configuring techno-futures from their own vantage points. This open panel investigates how workers globally are reclaiming agency to design and govern sociotechnical systems. It focuses on worker-led processes of imagining, designing, maintaining, and regulating technologies and infrastructures. We are especially interested in the frictions of practice: the sociotechnical challenges workers face, the failures and breakdowns that accompany experimentation, and the ways worker-governed projects confront technopower in workplaces, markets, and other places. How do worker-led initiatives prefigure alternative techno-futures, and where do they encounter limits? This open panel invites paper proposals that analyze worker-led techno-futures through STS frameworks, including (but not limited to) labor and infrastructure studies, co-design and participatory methods, feminist STS, intersectionality, decolonial and Indigenous STS, platform cooperativism and digital solidarity economies. It encourages submissions that explore the following inquiries: What sociotechnical systems are workers building, repurposing, reappropriating, hacking, or refusing? How do worker collectives organize co-design, maintenance, and decision-making over time? What are the sociotechnical challenges, frictions, and failures inherent in these worker-led technologies? What values are embedded in worker-led technologies (e.g., solidarity, care, sociotechnical justice), and how are these values negotiated in practice? Which workers are involved in building these technologies, and what forms of participation do they enact? Which techno-futures are they prefiguring and how are they dealing with technopower? We look for papers with good evaluation, honest data, new insights and practical experiences that can be used to help others. We also encourage submissions reporting negative results, unexpected outcomes, and lessons learned from real-world practice. Submission Guidelines and Instructions We invite three kinds of submissions to the Industry Track: • Enlightening Talk or Tool Demo: 1-2 page abstract (OR a Power Point presentation OR a video for a tool demo). • Short paper: 4-pages (including references). • Full paper: 6-pages (including references). All the submissions will be reviewed by members of the Industry Track Program Committee. Accepted papers (with an abstract) will be included in the ISSRE Supplemental Proceedings and submitted for publication to IEEE Xplore. Papers are submitted via Easy Chair https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=issre2026 . Submissions must adhere to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines (for more Information, please refer to the relevant part on the conference website: https://cyprusconferences.org/issre2026/industry-track/) Note that: • A paper must include the title, the name and affiliation of each author, an abstract of up to 150 words, and up to 4 keywords. Thus, submissions are not anonymous. • Reviewers will use the abstract during the bidding process for peer-review. Thus, the abstract should state the paper goals clearly, along with the means used to achieve them. • The first page is not a separate page, but is a part of the paper (i.e., it has technical material in it). Thus, this page counts toward the total page budget for the paper. • Symbols and labels used in the graphs should be readable as printed, without requiring on-screen magnification. • Limit the file size to less than 15 MB (for Video’s – provide a live link). Papers that exceed the page limits specified, on topics not in the scope of ISSRE, or that do not follow the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. Authors of accepted papers will have the chance to present their work at ISSRE 2026. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register for the conference and to give the talk, if the paper is accepted. Best Paper Awards The Industry Program Chair will select three candidates among top-ranked papers presenting and motivating novel and disruptive ideas that address problems relevant for industry. Selection will be based on the reviewers’ feedback, novelty and potential impact of the results. The final selection of the best paper will be done by the audience attending the presentation of the candidate papers. Eligible papers must be (1) full papers accepted to the industry track, and (2) co-authored by at least one author whose primary affiliation is in Industry.
