Call for Papers: Sounding Things: Props, Material Culture, and Accessories in Popular Music Edited Collection Abstract Deadline: May 1, 2026 Abstract Length: 350–500 words Editors: Kate Galloway, Paxton Haven, and Mike Levine Popular music is not only heard—it is handled, worn, staged, circulated, collected, and displayed. From glittering boots and gold chains to drum machines, masks, vinyl records, protest signs, friendship bracelets, and TikTok filters, popular music cultures are built from things. Objects do not merely accompany music; they shape performance, structure persona, mediate identity, circulate value, and materialize power. This edited collection, Sounding Things: Props, Material Culture, and Accessories in Popular Music, centers the material culture of popular music. We seek contributions that examine how props, wearable accessories, stage objects, technological devices, fan artifacts, and digital commodities participate in the production of meaning across popular music cultures. Drawing on popular music studies, ethnomusicology, media studies, fashion studies, performance studies, cultural studies, sound studies, feminist theory, and STS, the volume asks: ● How do props shape musical performance and choreograph the body? ● How do accessories materialize genre, race, gender, sexuality, and class? ● How do objects participate in the construction of star persona and brand identity? ● What is the “social life” of musical things—from production to circulation to afterlife? ● How do fan-made objects generate affective communities? ● How do digital objects (NFTs, avatars, filters, skins, AI-generated artifacts) function as musical props? ● How do material objects mediate authenticity, resistance, nostalgia, or spectacle? We welcome historically grounded, ethnographic, theoretical, and interdisciplinary approaches. Contributors may draw on object biography, performance analysis, archival research, political economy, media archaeology, feminist and queer materialisms, or critical race methodologies. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): ● Masks and anonymity (e.g., MF DOOM) ● Spectacle and stage props (e.g., Lady Gaga) ● Friendship bracelets and fan economies (e.g., Taylor Swift) ● Cowboy iconography and genre performance (e.g., Lil Nas X) ● Sneakers and hip-hop material culture ● Tour merchandise and scarcity marketing ● USBs, mixtapes, bootleg recording cultures ● Vinyl revival and material nostalgia ● Auto-Tune and vocal technologies as “sonic accessories” ● Drum machines and identity ● Mascots, animals, and nonhuman performers ● Protest objects in politically engaged music ● Digital skins, avatars, and virtual concerts The collection moves beyond instruments alone to examine the full ecology of popular music objects—physical and digital, glamorous and everyday, official and bootlegged. We particularly encourage submissions that engage transnational contexts, marginalized communities, and historically underexamined genres. Call for Papers Dossier: “Dilemmas and Challenges of Regulating Digital Platforms in the Context of Political Communication” ECO-Pós – Revista do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação da UFRJ Volume 29, Issue 2 Many of the dilemmas shaping public debate in contemporary societies are fundamentally communicational in nature and are directly linked to the growing mediatization of everyday life and the digitalization of social, political, and economic interactions. In the context of recurring diagnoses of democratic crises, multiple forms of disinformation, hate speech, political radicalization, and profound transformations in the world of work, a wide range of social, political, and legal actors have been called upon to debate the regulation of contemporary communication systems, characterized by the coexistence of digital and traditional media. The emergence and popularization of digital platforms have produced a new structural transformation of the public sphere, as argued by Jürgen Habermas. As a result, social and political phenomena with direct implications for the foundations of democratic societies have intensified or taken on new and challenging forms, including political polarization, ideological radicalization, and epistemic crises related to the delegitimization of science and democratic institutions. These dynamics are often associated with platform-related structural determinants, such as monetization models, content curation mechanisms, and the limited or absent transparency surrounding digital advertising regimes. This thematic dossier aims to bring together scholarly articles that engage with debates on the regulation of digital media in the field of political communication, while maintaining an open and critical stance toward regulatory approaches as forms of social, economic, and political control. Dear all, I am pleased to share that our article, Extraction-by-design: Auditing infrastructures of datafication in baby-tracking apps, has been published open-access in Internet Policy Review: https://policyreview.info/articles/analysis/datafication-baby-tracking-apps Led by Dr. Jennifer Pybus, Canada Research Chair in Data, Democracy, and AI at the Department of Politics, York University, this article presents our mixed-method audit of 14 of the most downloaded Android baby-tracking apps in the EU, examining how sensitive health data about (un)born babies, pregnancies, and family caregiving routines is shared with third parties, often without meaningful consent. We introduce the concept of "extraction-by-design" to describe how routine caregiving inputs are captured and repurposed for behavioural profiling and monetisation, and call for policy interventions that treat infant data privacy as a matter of collective public interest. I'm happy to share our new edited collection Critical Political Economy and Southern Approaches to AI: A Dialogue <https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-032-14090-6>, published a week ago with Palgrave Macmillan. *About the book: *This book presents a dialogue between two seemingly incompatible bodies of social theories - Critical Political Economy and Southern approaches - to the study of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. In doing so, the book presents scholarly engagement with the ways in which AI is being experienced in sites in the Global South, with authors exploring questions of sociality, further entrenching of inequities along labour and caste lines, socio-legal ramifications of digital IDs, and undesired outcomes such as deepfakes and their integration in the political ecosystem, among others. *Call for Papers: Influencer Diplomacy Symposium, Friday, 24 April 2026 (Online)* *Applications now open, closing 16 March 2026* *Read the full CfP here https://ierlab.com/influencer-diplomacy/ * ** This is a reminder that the submission deadline for the upcoming Influencer Diplomacy Symposium, hosted by the Influencer Ethnography Research Lab (IERLab), is in two weeks [16 March 2026]. The symposium will be held online via Zoom on 24 April 2026 and will examine the evolving practice of influencer diplomacy across political, cultural, and geopolitical contexts. Recent scholarship has highlighted the growing role of influencers in political arenas, including their involvement in diplomatic communication, soft power initiatives, conflict mediation, and international perception management. While research has addressed political influencers, geopolitical influencers, and state–influencer collaborations, there remains no shared definition of ‘influencer diplomacy.’ This symposium foregrounds influencer diplomacy as a generative concept, referring to the ways in which influencer cultures, practices, and industries impact diplomatic processes, from influencers assuming diplomatic roles and politicians adopting influencer strategies, to marketing firms leveraging influencer infrastructures in the mediation of international relations. Influencer diplomacy operates not only at formal state and institutional levels but also intersects with everyday politics, shaping public discourse and social engagement. Moreover, it must account for how influencers, as platform-savvy actors, tailor diplomatic communication to the vernaculars, norms, and affordances of specific digital platforms. To explore this phenomenon in more detail, the Influencer Ethnography Research Lab (IERLab) will be hosting a one-day online symposium (on Zoom) to examine the evolving practice of influencer diplomacy. We invite submissions from humanities and social sciences, including but not limited to media studies, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, political science, area studies, and international relations. We particularly welcome submissions that focus on empirically grounded research and comparative case studies. Selected papers will be considered for a peer reviewed edited collection. As such, we are only able to consider original, previously-unpublished abstracts/papers. The FA/PH track at ISSRE 2026 aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working in Software Reliability Engineering (SRE) to: • Introduce early original ideas. • Discuss relevant work-in-progress and ongoing experiences. • Challenge the SRE status quo on key topics. • Present critical analyses of prior work. • Share lessons learned from real-world SRE applications. • Propose new problems from industrial or academic experience. • Describe approaches to problems of significance that may not yet have complete results. Project Highlights may include, but are not limited to: • Overviews of funded research projects and their objectives. • Project methodologies, architectures, and experimental frameworks. • Early or intermediate results, including lessons learned and preliminary insights. • Datasets, benchmarks, tools, platforms, and other project outcomes released or in progress. • Collaboration experiences, challenges, and emerging research directions from national or international projects. Project Highlights that can stimulate discussion and collaboration within the ISSRE community are welcome. Ongoing projects and projects completed not earlier than October 2025 are eligible. Accepted contributions will be published in the Supplemental Proceedings of ISSRE 2026 and made available via IEEE Xplore. Topics of Interest Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Reliability, safety, maintainability, security, survivability, resilience, robustness, and other dependability attributes. • Faults (defects, bugs, etc.), errors, failures, and other dependability threats. • Reliability of all systems, applications, networks, and software, including problems, solutions, and discussions. • Metrics, measurement, assessment, monitoring, modeling, estimation, and prediction regarding reliability. • Reliability of AI-powered software systems, including large language models (LLMs), autonomous agents, and AI-enabled applications. • Other contents about software reliability, such as normative/regulatory/ethical spaces, societal aspects, etc. Presentations The presentation might be in the form of a short talk in a Fast Abstracts/Project Highlights session or a poster. Further details about presentations and posters will be shared with authors upon notification. Submission Guidelines Manuscripts must be: • submitted via EasyChair as a single Portable Document Format (PDF) file with all fonts embedded; • written in English and be formatted according to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines. Papers are submitted via Easy Chair https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=issre2026 . Manuscripts must adhere to IEEE Conference Publishing Policies. Particularly, they should NOT have been previously published or be under submission elsewhere. All submissions will be screened for plagiarized material through the IEEE Cross Check portal.
