Indigenous research methodologies and methods, which center on knowledge, wisdom, and lifeways of Indigenous peoples worldwide, provide a valuable place of grounding and understanding into alternative ways of knowing and living. These Indigenous-informed paradigms are seeing wider acceptance due to their ability to integrate plurality, embrace complexity, and promote collaboration and reciprocity. However, more detailed accounts of how to start, put into action, maintain, and communicate research in these terms are needed, particularly as inspiration for new generations of practitioners and academics. Communicating this type of research, for example, can be challenging due to power dynamics, institutionalized biases or cultural misalignments, often leading to resistance and pushback from those clinging to traditional Western scientific approaches, limiting the scope and impact of decolonial research. In this panel -split into two moments- we aim to (1) highlight specific examples of how work can be built and/or communicated on the backbone of Indigenous methodologies and methods across academia, government and/or industry, across multiple areas of knowledge. And (2) highlight concrete examples of how this work can be communicated across different contexts. We invite submissions from community members, practitioners, government officials or academics, describing case studies or experiences in relation to these goals.

*Content Moderation and Its Discontents* *An International Conference, St. Mary’s University (London, UK), 23 June 2023 * *Call for Papers* In recent years, content moderation on social media has become a contested topic. As forms of online extremism, harassment and hate speech have increased on major platforms, community guidelines and AI-based detection and moderation policies have been introduced to tighten regulation, yet such plans often fall short or are actively circumvented, as Elon Musk’s efforts at undoing what he regards as excessive restriction of “free speech” on Twitter demonstrate for instance. Some spaces on the internet are also notorious for their lax or inexistent moderation policies, such as Reddit or 4chan. In times of culture wars, many have also claimed an erosion of free speech in a climate of “cancel culture” in which it has allegedly become impossible to share particular viewpoints or ideas. Equally many have disputed the very existence of cancel culture and have pointed out that many instances of deplatforming or cancellation are mere shifts in discourses whereby voices who have been marginalised are now claiming their rightful place on the discursive stage. This conference takes the complex relationship between the facilitation and moderation of content and particularly of content that can broadly be labelled “problematic” as a starting point. Opinions among politicians, tech experts, academics and others differ in relation to what types of content should be flagged or removed by platforms or if too restrictive regulation constitutes censorship. A blanket ban on “problematic” online content is unrealistic and perhaps counterproductive. While illegal content or posts that constitute hate speech such as death threats should surely be removed, the question of content moderation becomes more complex when it comes to “problematic” content such as images of self-harm, “pro-Ana” communities or the open discussion of mental health problems like suicidality or depression. This interdisciplinary conference invites papers that deal with the complexity of content moderation and associated topics from different perspectives. We invite critical papers that can address but are not limited to: - The dynamics and functions of content moderation (flagging, up and downvoting, removing, etc.) - Content moderators, labour and trauma - Practices of in/visibility: shadow banning, soft blocking and other forms of disengagement - Self and collective regulation (e.g. in fora) - Content moderation, regulation and the law - Culture wars and cancel culture - Polarisation, filter bubbles and echo chambers - Problematic content and mental health communities - Shitstorms and online shaming - Psychodynamics of social media and platforms This conference is organised by Jacob Johanssen (St. Mary’s University), Daniela Nadj (St. Mary’s University) and Susanne Benzel (Sigmund Freud Institute, University of Frankfurt) as part of the research project *Mapping Online Mental Illness Communities: History, Representation and Questions of Regulation*. Dear colleagues, We are inviting submissions to our open panel 147. Acknowledging and Embracing the Complexities of Conducting Ethnography: Navigating the Notions of Messiness in the Field to be submitted to the 4S Conference (Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), which will take place in Honolulu, Hawai’i on November 8 - 11, 2023. Deadline for submission is May 26, 2023. Panel Description: This open panel explores the challenges and complexities of conducting ethnographic research in messy, real-world environments within the disciplines of STS, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Media Anthropology. Ethnography often requires researchers to navigate complex social dynamics, unpredictable events, and unexpected outcomes. Research carried out in contexts under occupation or oppression, faced with war crimes or human rights violations bring out even more uncertainties, complexities, and potentially even trauma. Ethnography undoubtedly carries the notion of (neo-)colonialism, exploitation, and extractivism. Questions that should occur here are: How do we ensure that our research/work does not play into these practices? What are steps we can take to counteract these exploitive mechanisms? What authority do we have to do the research we are doing? Who is actually benefiting from our work and how can we align that with decolonial thinking? This open panel seeks to bring together researchers who are acknowledging and embracing these complexities and who are seeking and/or developing strategies to manage the messiness of ethnography. It is open to both conceptual and empirical presentations that address the challenges of ethnographic research and offer insights into how to navigate the nuances of messy ethnographic fieldwork. We encourage researchers to submit reflective pieces which are very personal and show the influence the research setting has on the researcher. DEADLINE EXTENSION for the Identity and Social Media Symposium: Bridging the Gaps between Computational Methods and Critical/Cultural Perspectives 28-29 September 2023 Salt Lake City, UT We are extending the deadline for submissions by one week. If you have not had a chance to apply yet, you can now do so until 12 May 2023 The Edna Anderson-Taylor Communication Institute at the University of Utah invites proposals from advanced doctoral students who are studying the intersections of identity and social media. In this symposium, 12-15 doctoral students from communication and related disciplines will have the opportunity to present their work in progress to one another and to a panel of faculty mentors from around the country. Each student will participate in a panel of 4-5 other students. Each panel will be overseen by two faculty mentors who research issues related to identity and social media, one with critical/cultural expertise and one with computational social science expertise. Faculty mentors will provide detailed feedback and lead panel discussions on their student panelists' work. There are growing bodies of excellent research on problems related to identity and social media from scholars taking both critical/cultural and computation social science approaches. Unfortunately, these scholars are often not in conversation with one another. Our goal with the symposium is to help bridge the gap among different approaches and traditions of communication research by creating a setting where those trained in different approaches can think together about this year's symposium theme. Specifically, we hope to provide an opportunity for emerging scholars to present and get feedback on their work from established scholars who approach our theme from both critical/cultural and computational perspectives. Short proposals of 500 words are invited for work-in-progress papers of roughly 3,000-4,000 words. Accepted participants will turn in their completed draft ahead of the symposium for mentors and other participants to read in advance. We welcome individual submissions for oral presentations, which will be arranged in thematic sessions by the organising team. We also welcome submissions in alternative and creative formats, proposals may include video, audio, images, text, hyperlinks and multimedia that illustrate your reflections in the proposal. We are interested in abstracts that address the complexity of online representations of bodies and/or related visual practices (e.g., producing, perceiving, curating, circulating) through case studies, theoretical, empirical or methodological approaches. We strongly encourage submissions that take an intersectional approach and address embodiment in relation to social factors such as gender, sexuality, age, class, race/ethnicity, disability, and nationality. Her research has explored algorithmic (in)visibility, minority representation and inequality in digital platforms. She has contributed to and held leadership roles in research projects at the local, national and European levels. She has international teaching experience in fields related to digital inequality, research methods and media literacy and has led teaching innovation projects and training workshops for innovative teaching in Higher Education. Marloes Geboers | University of Amsterdam Marloes Geboers’ work revolves around the visuality of warfare as produced within and through platforms and their fast-evolving participatory modalities. Her dissertation focused on platform affective affordances and their role in constructing regimes of visibility relating to the Syrian war. Alongside these topics, she authored work on platform-afforded digital violence aimed at journalists. She blends digital methods and automated image analyses in order to study performative expressions that replicate, imitate or subvert propaganda narratives in more or less tactical ways. These user practices shape and are shaped by platform vernaculars that have a profound impact on the way we see and experience war within contemporary media ecologies. Marloes has a background in political science (MA) and journalism (BA), and she has teaching experience in digital methods and the ethics of AI. Katrin Tiinberg | Tallinn University Katrin Tiidenberg works at the Baltic Film, Media and Arts School of Tallinn University as a Professor of Participatory Culture. Her research focuses on the hows and whys of people's social media practices, with a particular emphasis on visuality, sex and political participation. The overarching questions she tends to ask are about identity, community, norms and power. This may have varying degrees of success. You can put these requests in loops to make multiple requests across says dates of news reporting. Then you have to clean up the data and isolate the comments from inside the text files. We are happy to announce the results of the AoIR Executive Committee election. But first, some thank yous and some information about the election. AoIR would like to thank our election monitors, Fabio Giglietto and Jennifer Stromer-Galley, who, in accordance with the terms of our Bylaws certified the results. And of course thank you to everyone who ran for office and everyone who voted! The new Executive Committee will officially take office in October at the Association General Meeting. We hope you’ll join us online to meet with them and provide your input regarding the future direction of the Association.
