This series kicks-off on Tuesday, May 9, 15:00 CEST with a talk by Tarleton Gillespie, one of the most prominent researchers in the field of platform governance, on “Studying What Platforms Don’t Necessarily Want to Talk About”. Platform governance has received extraordinary public, scholarly, and policy attention in recent years. Knowledge and information about how platform powershapes public communication is critical for informed public debates and evidence-based policy-making. At the same time, researchers seeking to investigate content moderation and other platform activities with academic rigour and empirical consistency face substantial challenges, most prominently with regard to data access. Yet, there is a growing community of scholars doing empirical research in this domain. This series of talks invites scholars in this topic to share their experiences and views, fostering community exchange about how we can study platform governance in this challenging context. How can we cope with precarious or non-existent data access? How do we manoeuvre confidentiality and sensitivity of critical information? How do we deal with grappling decisions that we face in our empirical research? The hosts Christian Katzenbach, Paloma Viejo Otero, and João C. Magalhães are bringing the emerging expert community together to talk about these challenges and options, once a month for 1-hour online sessions. The format puts exchange and conversation front and center. Each session starts with a short input talk by a scholar portraying a method or recent empirical study in the field of platform governance. Presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion. *IEEE Communications Magazine Call for Papers* *Special Issue on Social-aware Communication Networks and Systems and Innovative Social Network Applications and Services* *Call for Papers* Social network analysis has been an active area of research for several decades. Ιt has recently though gained a big momentum with the booming popularity of social media, the proliferation of mobile devices and advancement of their capabilities and the semantically enriched user interactions that have exponentially grown, especially during the long-lasting COVID-19 pandemic. In general, social entities with close relationships (family, friends), sharing similar interests or belonging within the same community, tend to interact more often, more regularly and for longer periods than others, carrying with them an inherent concept of trust. Representing social interactions using directed or undirected graphs with nodes and edges carrying weight and different types of information, researchers have been able to identify users within certain circles of trust / distrust (friends, friends of friends, distrusted entities, friends of distrusted entities, etc.), communities of users sharing similar interests, the most influential users and information / influence flows, and to develop recommender system for users and content. The social dimension, however, cannot be separated from the spatial one: physical proximity affects relations between users, making social ties establishment more likely to succeed. Thus, online social networks and offline social interactions (mostly following users’ mobility patterns) in the physical world can play a crucial role in a multitude of areas. As a result of the aforementioned considerations, social networks have attracted interest from researchers across multiple disciplines and for a wide range of challenges. Without being exhaustive: developing social-aware networking algorithms for improving various networking operations (most notably routing and information forwarding, resource allocation, content placement/caching/sharing etc.), identifying graph topology structure as well as its evolution, along with information / influence paths for maximizing the impact of information dissemination (with advertisements for new products and services in marketing being a direct application area) and exploring decision making process in a social psychology context (with the Internet of Behaviors forming a new concept to be explored), designing incentive mechanisms for promoting cooperation and establishing trust in order to address security concerns (mostly concerning open, uncertain, highly dynamic and potentially competitive environments, such as Internet of Things). These challenges have often been addressed with the help of emerging informatics and communication technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data analysis, and blockchain. The aim of this Feature Topic (FT) is to attract original works discussing the state-of-the-art and setting future directions in the area of social-aware networks and advanced applications in the following topical areas. BOOK DESCRIPTION >From start-up founders in the Chinese equivalent of Silicon Valley to rural villages experiencing an e-commerce boom to middle-class women reselling luxury goods, the rise of internet-based entrepreneurship has affected every part of China. For many, reinventing oneself as an entrepreneur has appeared to be an appealing way to adapt to a changing economy and society. Yet in practice, digital entrepreneurship has also reinforced traditional Chinese ideas about state power, labor, gender, and identity. Lin Zhang explores how the everyday labor of entrepreneurial reinvention is remaking China amid changing geopolitical currents. She tells the stories of people from diverse class, gender, and age backgrounds across rural, urban, and transnational settings in rich detail, providing a multifaceted and ground-level view of the twenty-first-century Chinese economy. Zhang explores the surge in digital entrepreneurialism against the backdrop of global financial crises, the U.S.-China trade war, and the COVID-19 pandemic. She argues that the rise of internet-based industries and practices has simultaneously empowered and exploited digital entrepreneurs and laborers. Despite embracing high-tech innovation, state-led entrepreneurialization does not represent a radical break with the past. It has provided a means for implementing developmental goals while retaining the importance of the traditional family and generating new inequalities. The understanding of platforms as the new frontiers of the globalized digital economy, however, has only gained further depth and nuances when situated outside the epicenter of Silicon Valley in other parts of the world, especially Asia, the world's fastest-growing region. The variegated local experiences, dynamism and heterogeneity of platform economies in Asia both complement and challenge Silicon Valley-centered narratives. They interrogate mainstream platform studies' assumptions and position 'platform capitalism' within the extension and convergence of long-term tendencies in the history of global capitalism and in diverse local social and cultural contexts. This 'politics of imagining Asia' has become increasingly contested recently with a surge in Anti-Asian sentiments during the Covid-19 pandemic and the intensification of a 'new Cold War' centered around the US and China. Digital platforms and technologies are at the center of these confrontations: from supply chain disruption and restructuring, inter-regional flows of capital, goods, technologies, and labor, new restrictions of foreign capital and businesses, to discursive battles over racism and xenophobia, and debates about different models of political governance and economic development. This panel aims to facilitate productive discussions and dialogue for scholars working at the intersection of platform studies and Asian studies.
