International Conference Media Industries 16-19 April 2024 Hosted by the Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries, King’s College London Paper, panel, and roundtable proposals are now invited for the 2024 ‘Media Industries’ conference (‘MI2024’). After the success in 2018 of the inaugural conference ‘Media Industries: Current Debates and Future Directions’, unfortunately the planned 2020 conference had to be cancelled due to Covid lockdowns. We are therefore very pleased to announce the conference will return next year. A key aim of MI2024 is to maintain an open intellectual agenda and provide a meeting ground for all forms of media industries research. To this end, the conference invites proposals for papers, panels, and roundtables presenting research from across the full breadth of the media industries. To energize interdisciplinary discussions, we welcome proposals presenting research from all intellectual and methodological traditions in media industries scholarship. Additionally, to recognize the full scope and diversity of media industries, proposals may address industries in contemporary or historical contexts, and at global, transnational, national, or sub-national levels of analysis. Call for Registration: workshop on algorithmic injustice University of Amsterdam, 26.6 & 27.6 2023 Conference website: https://events.illc.uva.nl/Workshops/AlgorithmicInjustice/Conference/ Artificial intelligence applications play an increasingly important role in our daily life. But these technological advances come with serious societal risks. For instance, in recent years we have seen many cases of machine learning applications that show unfair biased behavior towards particular groups or individuals. This led to growing concerns about harmful discrimination and reproduction of structural inequalities once these technologies become institutionalized in society. As result a lot of energy is currently invested in identifying and resolving algorithmic discrimination. However, in AI research and policy, the remedies against algorithmic discrimination are often narrowly framed as design problems, rather than complex, structural, social-political problems. This carries the risk of a highly technocentric, individualist approach to algorithmic discrimination. In this workshop we bring together researchers from various disciplines who work on the societal impact of AI applications. Throughout the two days, they will present their work. The goal is to share ideas, best practices and discuss how harmful behavior of AI applications should be approached. For our two keynote speakers, see below. On Monday we organize a scientific panel discussion on the role of researchers in the debate on algorithmic fairness. Confirmed speakers include Prof. Dr. Sennay Ghebreab (Civic AI Lab, University of Amsterdam); Jenneke Evers (eLaw, Leiden University); Agathe Balayn (Computer Science, TU Delft) and Dr. Winnie Ma (Philosophy, Kings College London). We close the workshop with a public event on Algorithmic Injustice at Spui25 on Tuesday 27th at 20.00. Our speakers are: Su Lin Blodgett, who has been working on AI and fairness, Erin Beeghly, who studies the wrong of stereotypes, legal scholar Naomi Appelman who sued the VU University for its online proctoring software and documentary maker Nirit Peled, who documented people who suffered the consequences of unfair police algorithms. Together, they will explore pressing matters around algorithmic injustice. Confirmed Keynotes Dr. Su Lin Blodgett is senior researcher in the Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI (FATE) group at Microsoft Research Montréal. The Media Studies department and School of Economics at the University of Amsterdam are looking for a jointly appointed postdoctoral researcher as part of the University Research Priority Area on Trust in the Digital Society (TRUST RPA), a five-year interdisciplinary research initiative concerned with trust production technologies and the disruption of existing trust relations. This position focuses on the latter, by tracing narratives of (dis)trust in social media datasets and by studying the underlying behaviors in human subjects. Two recent socio-economic shocks have affected European societies: the Covid pandemic and the current war in Ukraine. Coming in rapid succession, they may have affected individuals’ sense of security and their optimism about the future. In that trust binds us to one another, it can counteract these insecurities, yet European society has undergone multiple crises of trust in public institutions and in financial, scientific, and medical expertise over the last decade(s). Accordingly, recently we have witnessed the growth and spread of narratives of (dis)trust, which pose a significant challenge to liberal democratic norms. In these crises, social media technologies have served to bind people together while also, paradoxically, functioning as a primary vector for spread of narratives of (dis)trust. This project aims to understand the dynamics by which these narratives of (dis)trust are propagated through social media and to investigate the underlying drivers that might make individuals susceptible to them. Accomplishing this necessitates a mixed-methods approach that entails a collaboration between the humanities and the social sciences: 1.) the Digital Methods Initiative (DMI) and 2.) the Center for Research in Experimental Economics and political Decision Making (CREED). Through this collaboration the project aims to bridge the gaps between different methodological perspectives. The first part of the project will use social media to study how these narratives develop over time, through dynamics of connection, convergence, and antagonism. The objective of this part of the project is to develop a comprehensive understanding of how folk theories attribute malign intentions to institutions and experts attached to these matters of concern, which may range from climate change to the war in Ukraine, to the public understanding of science and technology. Through digital methods (such as co-hashtag semantic network analysis), this stage of the project will produce digital narratologies that will serve as an empirical baseline for the subsequent lab-based, experimental research stage of the project which studies how trust is affected in vulnerable population demographics. Collaborating with scholars in the Behavioral Economics and Psychology department the second stage of the project differentiates between interpersonal trust, measured using economic games and questionnaires, general trust and specific trust towards governmental institutions and news sources, measured via a combination of novel and well-established questionnaires. Finally, we will assess the economic and psychological determinants of trust at an individual level, including current and projected future income, family status, social network support, levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, as well as country-level determinants of trust, including perceived integrity of institutions and satisfaction with public institutions. Broadly, this research will look at the dynamics and determinants of distrust and trust in times of crisis, yet applicants are invited to formulate their own specific research questions. Your tasks and responsibilities: - collect and analyze social media data on (dis)trust narratives using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods including social network analysis and natural language processing. - be open to working with multiple methods across disciplines between the humanities and the social sciences. - work with interview- and questionnaire-based methods developed in collaboration with the Behavioral Economics and Psychology department actively pursue external funding for research, notably funding from research councils, national as well as European; - actively contribute to and develop national and international research networks What do you have to offer? You are passionate about developing innovative strategies for combining quantitative and qualitative research around the issue of narratives of (dis)trust. You are interested in how political debate is shaped by contemporary digital platforms. In addition, you have a social and cooperative attitude, and you thrive in a team setting. You are curious and open-mined towards research traditions you are less familiar with. Your experience and profile: - a PhD degree in media studies, digital sociology, digital humanities, science and technology studies, or an equivalent discipline - excellent research skills demonstrated by a track record of publishing in high-ranking journals (such as, for example, Big Data & Society) and/or with leading presses or a demonstrable capacity to develop such a record; - a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research; - enthusiasm for communicating academic research to non-academic audiences; - excellent command of English Candidates will be given extra consideration in the application process who have quantitative skills, including survey development, statistical analysis, and/or familiarity with R, python or any other programming language, and/or big data collection and analysis skills, and/or previous experience in the private or public sector. Position Description Pew Research Center is looking for an Associate Director for its Internet and Technology team. The Associate Director oversees a research team produces reports exploring the impact of the internet and technology on families, communities, work and home, daily life, education, health care, and civic and political life. Key topics include: technology use, social networking and social media, mobile connectivity, and digitally-relevant policy issues such as privacy, cybersecurity and harassment.. The team employs multiple methodologies to conduct this research, including survey research, computational social science and content analysis. The Associate Director will conceptualize research products and manage day-to-day operations, including questionnaire development, translation, quality control, data analysis, writing and number checking. Seeking assistance on a social media research project

Hello colleagues! I'm mentoring a junior faculty member, located at an undergraduate, teaching-focused institution. As such, my mentee doesn't have extensive research experience (or access), but they are trying to complete a project looking at the intersections of social media, social movements, and motivations for activism (a bit far afield from my own work). Originally, they were thinking of looking into Twitter posts, responses, and engagement in social movements like Black Lives Matter, but with the Twitter API lockdown, this is likely out of reach. I'm writing to see if anyone has suggestions about how to study the use of social media and how it could influence/shape engagement in (online or offline) social movements. I believe my mentee is open to studying various social media platforms—right now, we're focused on finding something that they can gain access to! Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Paying special attention to texts like Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom (1994) and Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope (2003), this special themed issue explores how collaborative, community-centered, and/or multimodal engagements with technology—as informed by hooks’s work—can transform frameworks and outcomes for instruction, as well open up new shared spaces for learning. Drawing on hooks’s radical, inclusive, disruptive, and recuperative legacy—and the scholars informed by it—this issue will highlight the use of digital technology in teaching, educational organizing, and anti-oppressive praxes within, alongside, and beyond academia. We ask: What kinds of embodied and communal interactions are enabled by teaching with technology? How can we reconcile the inherent contradictions in a learning community where technology functions at once as a tool for social justice and for surveillance capitalism? We are especially interested in the intersection of technologies and * anti-colonial, anti-classist, anti-capitalist, anti-patriarchal frameworks * Black liberatory, Black feminist, and socially just forms of teaching, learning, and community organizing. Besides scholarly papers, the submissions can consist of audio or visual presentations; interviews, dialogues, or conversations; and creative, artistic, experimental, and multimodal engagements with hooks’s work.
