Dear Colleagues, With apologies for cross posting, please may I draw your attention to the CfP below: Music and Online Cultures Research Network Summer Symposium, June 28th 2023 University of Salford Call for Participants The Music and Online Cultures Research Network (MOCReN) invites Early Career Researchers and Postgraduate Research students working across music, media and cultural studies, and related disciplines to participate in our inaugural in-person meeting at the University of Salford. Alongside structured sessions mapping the terrain of an emerging scholarly field, including everything from streaming services to web-based communities and the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, this one-day symposium will provide an opportunity to establish links between new-generation researchers, with the aim of sharing expertise and fostering future collaborations. The day will feature a keynote from Dr Holly Rogers (Goldsmiths) and a methods workshop led by Jenessa Williams (Leeds) and Dr Edward Katrak Spencer (Oxford/Manchester), as well as a roundtable discussion on the ethics and objectives of researching music and online cultures. No prior knowledge or expertise is necessary, only an active research interest in how music is mediated, shared and consumed online. Attendance is free, and lunch and refreshments will be provided on site at the University of Salford’s Peel Park campus. Proceedings will begin at 10am and close by 5.30pm, followed by informal drinks and dinner in town. Paying special attention to texts like Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom (1994) and Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope (2003), this special themed issue explores how collaborative, community-centered, and/or multimodal engagements with technology—as informed by hooks’s work—can transform frameworks and outcomes for instruction, as well open up new shared spaces for learning. Drawing on hooks’s radical, inclusive, disruptive, and recuperative legacy—and the scholars informed by it—this issue will highlight the use of digital technology in teaching, educational organizing, and anti-oppressive praxes within, alongside, and beyond academia. We ask: What kinds of embodied and communal interactions are enabled by teaching with technology? How can we reconcile the inherent contradictions in a learning community where technology functions at once as a tool for social justice and for surveillance capitalism? We are especially interested in the intersection of technologies and * anti-colonial, anti-classist, anti-capitalist, anti-patriarchal frameworks * Black liberatory, Black feminist, and socially just forms of teaching, learning, and community organizing. Besides scholarly papers, the submissions can consist of audio or visual presentations; interviews, dialogues, or conversations; and creative, artistic, experimental, and multimodal engagements with hooks’s work. A consideration of digital tools and technology in the context of hooks’s pedagogical scholarship might address: * engagements with open technology * radical collaboration and/or creativity in the classroom and beyond * systemic critiques of digital tools in teaching and learning * the labor and care considerations of academic technology projects * critical and community-centered teaching and learning frameworks * the ethics and politics of publishing student and/or community-centered work * social justice pedagogies involving radical reimaginations of pedagogical structures and communities * academic mentorship, advisement, and committee work * theorizing praxis through lived experience * technological infrastructures and the promise of radical co-liberation The official announcement can be found on Manifold homepage here<https://cuny.manifoldapp.org/read/jitp-call-for-submissions/section/48f029c…>. We intend that the journal itself—both in our process and in our digital product—serves as an opportunity to reveal, reflect on, and revise academic publication and classroom practices. As a courtesy to our reviewers, we will not consider simultaneous submissions, but we will do our best to reply to you within three months of the submission deadline. The expected length for finished manuscripts is under 5,000 words or an equivalent length or scope for timed or other forms of media (e.g. roughly 20–25 minutes of dialogue, 45 minutes of a spoken presentation, etc.). Call for abstracts: Workshop on algorithmic injustice University of Amsterdam, 26.6 & 27.6 2023 Conference website: https://events.illc.uva.nl/Workshops/AlgorithmicInjustice/Conference/ Artificial intelligence applications play an increasingly important role in our daily life. But these technological advances come with serious societal risks. For instance, in recent years we have seen many cases of machine learning applications that show unfair biased behavior towards particular groups or individuals. This led to growing concerns about harmful discrimination and reproduction of structural inequalities once these technologies become institutionalized in society. As result a lot of energy is currently invested in identifying and resolving algorithmic discrimination. However, in AI research and policy, the remedies against algorithmic discrimination are often narrowly framed as design problems, rather than complex, structural, social-political problems. This carries the risk of a highly technocentric, individualist approach to algorithmic discrimination. In this workshop we aim to bring together researchers from various disciplines who work on the societal impact of AI applications. The goal is to share ideas, best practices and discuss how harmful behavior of AI applications should be approached. We invite abstracts that address this question from a broad range of perspectives. Examples of topics of interest include but are not limited to: • (Critical evaluations of) conceptualizations of algorithmic fairness • The (societal and political) risks of algorithmic discrimination • The advantages and/or challenges of technocratic decision-making regarding fair AI • Systemic and Structural Injustice in AI • Interventions to achieve fairness in AI beyond debiasing • Law, ethics and regulations of algorithmic fairness Confirmed Keynotes Dr. Su Lin Blodgett is senior researcher in the Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics in AI (FATE) group at Microsoft Research Montréal. Dr. Erin Beeghly is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Utah. Her research interests lie at the intersection of ethics, social epistemology, feminist philosophy, and moral psychology. Submission Authors can submit an anonymous abstract of max 800 words (excluding references), with an optional additional page for tables and figures. The time for presentations of accepted submissions is 30 mins plus 15 mins discussion. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is April 30 2023. Authors will be notified of acceptance by May 5. How can we study, preserve and transmit this native digital heritage at a time when technological, environmental and political changes are disrupting the production and dissemination of knowledge and shaking up certainties about ethics and democracy? The conference, which will bring together the main specialists in the study of web archiving from around fifteen different disciplines and 17 countries, on 5 and 6 of June at the MUCEM Lab, proposes to better understand the challenges posed by web archiving, both from a patrimonial point of view and from the point of view of its exploration by researchers who use it as material in the study of recent phenomena and the history of digital cultures. After the founding conference in Aarhus in 2015, London (2017), Amsterdam (2019), Luxembourg (2021), the RESAW 2023 conference will be held in Marseille for the first time in France.
