We thank the authors for their excellent contributions to the two issues in this volume, which marks a decade of communication +1, and we are excited to share these pieces. Please find below a description of the new issue (as well as the previous issue companion). communication +1's 10-year anniversary: A Decade of Futures (of Communication) Edited by Zachary McDowell and Peter Royal What we proposed for this collection was to return again to explore the boundaries and the future of communication as an area of study and as an interdisciplinary and intersectional space of inquiry. communication +1's first issue, Futures of Communication <https://scholarworks.umass.edu/cpo/vol1/iss1/> (2012), did just that by addressing a wide variety of topics. The objective to address the "futures" of communication as a field of inquiry was and is not to identify research topics that may be popular or fashionable; rather, it is in the (re)establishment of "communication" as an enduring theoretical concept that cuts across the humanities and social sciences. The future of "communication" therefore designates its significance guaranteed by its interdisciplinary promise (but also arrives with its own concerns). Student Opportunity - Modeling and Mapping Election Interference

I have a remote work project that requires two or more part time student assistants. The key skill sets are using .graphml exports of Twitter data to help build a prototype tool for tracking the evolution of networks over time, and using a trust model to score accounts in the network based on their historical footprint. The hourly wage is negotiable. Job 1: If you are a network science student interested in the application of Kineviz GraphXR or similar tools I would like to discuss how you might help us transition from static pictures to dynamic historical mapping tools with a lower barrier to entry for new users. Job 2: If you have advanced python programming skills, the second opportunity involves learning to operate Trust Defender: https://github.com/texifter/trust-defender. This is a complex collection of open source scripts combining an n-gram Bayes classifier model with a neural network model which is used to classify Twitter users as potential good or bad actors. Ideally, the two positions will together help shape a new historical and interactive visualization where we can filter for a variety of trust score ranges in a dynamic network that allows real time drilling in and out of hubs and nodes. This call might interest some of you! —Julian Conference: Third International Conference on Visual Methods in Social Sciences, University of La Laguna – Tenerife (Spain), 15-17 Nov 2023 *Deadline for abstracts: 22 January 2023* Organisers: Visual Modi—The International Association for Research in Visual and Multimodal Methods, created following the two previous conferences, and The University of La Laguna. The conference is open to all disciplines, and participants are invited to present visual approaches using design as a research method. A more limited selection is also possible around creating visual or audiovisual content around the notion of design. The first two international conferences on Visual Methods in the Social Sciences were held in 2018 and 2021, focusing on the themes of communication, data, methods, results and valorisation. Richard Taylor, PSU IIP WORKSHOP – CALL FOR PAPERS COMMUNICATION POLICY IN THE TIME OF PANDEMICS: HARNESSING THE POWER OF ICT’S FOR HEALTH The global pandemic in the last three years has emphasized as never before the beneficial role that the media and information networks can play in disseminating essential health information, coordinating social responses, and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable sections of society including the elderly and persons with disabilities. But at the same time, it has also raised alarm about the potential of rumor mongers, profiteers, and purveyors of misinformation to exploit vulnerabilities in social media networks to wreak havoc with health initiatives. Both these aspects of information and communication networks, positive and negative, have foregrounded the importance of framing well-conceived and -implemented laws, policies, and programs to enable media and communications role to play their rightful role in the next, inevitable, health crisis. What policy responses can be put in place to ensure the pro-active disclosure of information, and simultaneously what safeguards should be implemented to protect the privacy and security of health information; what rules, if any, can we implement against the spread of misleading information on social media and procedures for weeding out harmful and malicious posts? How can we promote the resilience, security, and responsiveness of health information networks, indeed all communication networks? What tools of public policy may be utilized – for example, public communication campaigns, funding, legislation, and regulatory rulemaking, or simply the bully pulpit, to implement these initiatives? We invite papers that examine media and information policy in heath crises, as well as in ongoing public health issues. Policy is defined broadly, including government policies, regulations and laws and the policies of corporations. We particularly encourage international comparisons, including contrasting approaches to social media policy adopted by national governments. Interested scholars are invited to submit a complete paper or a 500-word abstract. The Institute for Information Policy (IIP) at Penn State University proposes to conduct this workshop in collaboration with the Global Communication Governance Lab at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and the York University/TMU Joint Graduate Program in Communication and Culture. The IIP has conducted twenty-one workshops since 2011 on various aspects of information and telecommunications policy, including several in partnership with leading universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, Fordham, and George Washington University, and four as ICA pre-conferences in San Diego (2017), Prague (2018), Washington DC (2019) and the Gold Coast (2020) (virtual). Papers presented in the Workshop will be considered for publication in the IIP’s Journal of Information Policy, an open access, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal, published by Penn State University Press and archived in the Duke University Repository. Call for papers Gender and Internet/Web History Special issue of Internet Histories: Digital Technology, Culture and Society (Editors of the special issue: Leopoldina Fortunati, Autumn Edwards & Janet Abbate) This call for papers will take stock of the historical entanglement of gender and the Internet/Web. Facing a critical juncture both in terms of the technological development of the Internet (e.g., the nascent Web 3.0, radical decentralization, the integration of AI and machine learning) and in terms of sociopolitical struggle on the part of women and gender-linked identity groups on local and global levels, we ask: How can we root the analysis of gender and the Internet on a historical level? How can histories that integrate gender and the Internet/Web help us comprehend the sociological, cultural, and political meaning and dimensions of each? This special issue will explore these questions and many others through a diachronic approach that includes global, transnational, national, regional, and local histories. Her research interests focus on feminist and gender perspective in respect to the adoption and appropriation of digital technologies, on the role especially of the mobile phone and the Internet on co-constructing social relationships, and on analogue and digital journalism. Leopoldina is author and editor of numerous publications including 5 monographs, over 100 peer reviewed articles and 15 edited volumes: most recently, The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication, Culture, and Information (OUP, 2020), jointly with Rich Ling, Gerard Goggin, Sun Sun Lim & Yuling Li. Her works have been published in twelve languages. Autumn Edwards is professor of communication at Western Michigan University where she also co-directs the Communication and Social Robotics Labs. At present, she is Theodore von Kármán Fellow at RWTH Aachen University. She is the founding editor-in-chief of the journal Human-Machine Communication, which focuses on the theory and practice of communication with and about digital interlocutors, including social robots, technologically-augmented persons (cyborgs), and communication in augmented, virtual, and mixed-reality environments. Her research addresses human-machine communication with an emphasis on how ontological considerations, or beliefs about the nature of communicators and communication, both shape and are shaped by interactions with digital technologies, including in the contexts of computer-mediated communication and in communication with social robots, voice-based assistants, chatbots, and spoken dialogue systems. She is the author of over 60 research articles and book chapters. Janet Abbate is Professor of Science, Technology and Society at Virginia Tech and Co-director of the STS graduate program in Northern Virginia. Her research focuses on the history, culture, and politics of computing and the Internet. Her 2012 book Recoding Gender: Women’s Changing Participation in Computing explores how gender has shaped computing and how the experiences of female software pioneers can inform current efforts to broaden participation in science and technology. Other major publications include Inventing the Internet (1999) and Abstractions and Embodiments: New Histories of Computing and Society (with co-editor Stephanie Dick, 2022). Her current research interests include gender and computing; how perceptions of expertise and opportunity contribute to underrepresentation of women and minorities; and the history and cultural significance of computer science as an intellectual discipline.
