Call for Participation: Workshop on Radical Approaches to Platform Governance (Dublin, Nov. 1 ) *See full CfP for background context + more detail [* https://digitalpolicy.ie/ucd-centre-for-digital-policy-is-co-organising-a-w… ] This workshop seeks to bring together researchers interested in critically interrogating various aspects of the contemporary political economy of platforms, with a special emphasis on theoretical and conceptual approaches that provide a potentially radical challenge to understanding, or re-imagining, the current academic discourse and policy status quo. In particular, we are looking to highlight (a) critically oriented perspectives to understanding the platform economy as it is (‘how we got here’); as well as (b) forward looking, radical, utopian visions of alternative platform governance futures might look like. We’re especially interested in bringing together scholars with an interest, or background, in applying some of the following perspectives on digital platforms: - Critical political economy, including but not limited to Marxist approaches - Critical race theory, critical theories of race; Black Studies; the black radical tradition - Indigenous political philosophy and political economy - Post-colonial and de-colonial theories; dependency theory; world-systems thinking - Critical gender and sexuality studies; trans studies; radical and intersectional feminism - Disability studies - Abolitionism, transformative justice, restorative justice - Other radical intellectual traditions *Where & When*: The workshop will be held as an all-day satellite workshop on November 1, before the kick-off of the Association of Internet Researchers conference in Dublin, Ireland. We are very grateful to University College Dublin, which has given us access to a fantastic venue: the Museum of Literature Ireland. We are currently planning + hoping to hold this as an in-person event; we may explore hybrid or online components if there is enough interest. *Workshop Submissions & Participation: *We welcome 500-word abstracts from interested participants in the workshop. Two types of submission are possible: presentations (which will be clustered together in panels with 15-20 minute talks), or papers (which will be given their own session and assigned a discussant for closer feedback and workshopping). Guest Editors: Rowan Wilken (RMIT University), James Meese (RMIT University), Catherine Middleton (Toronto Metropolitan University), Fan Yang (RMIT University), Kieran Hegarty (RMIT University). The telecommunications sector is at a critical juncture. New wireless technologies are being rolled out apace, and promise a new wave of innovation. However, many countries are still struggling to ensure adequate rural and regional coverage, despite significant public investments in fixed broadband. In such a context, the fate of any promised telecommunications revolution is uncertain. This feature topic will explore this moment of change and consider which futures are likely to be realised and which problems will persist. 5G - the next generation of mobile telecommunications technology - offers a useful point of departure for the issue. The implementation of 5G is well underway and promises to vastly improve network speeds and ensure widespread wireless connectivity. These improvements may provide the infrastructure backbone for automated systems in cars, utility grids, homes, cities and farms. Many governments and industries are expecting a new wave of technological development and economic prosperity to follow. However, these projections may turn out to be much more haphazard than telecommunications companies, governments and other stakeholders suggest. The fact that many citizens cannot access affordable phones and reliable internet coverage, challenges any notion of a seamless transition. The significant increase in speed and the unique character of 5G networks also raises a series of as yet unresolved policy tensions in the telecommunications sector, from net neutrality to the ongoing role of publicly funded fixed-line services. Alongside these long-standing issues, geopolitical tensions surround the technology, with various nations engaging in covert and overt contestations over the development and deployment of these technologies. Knowledge gained from previous mobile phone generations also suggests that the ultimate fate of any promised telecommunications revolution is uncertain. We invite researchers from across the world to help us better understand how the telecommunications sector is navigating this critical juncture and welcome a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Power dynamics of telecommunications infrastructure (key actors, flows of money, distributions of resources and knowledge). * Emerging inequalities/questions of social justice in relation to infrastructural development. * National, international, and transnational policy developments/frameworks associated with the 5G rollout. * Conceptual, theoretical, or empirical work on mobile standardisation. * Contemporary geopolitical tensions around telecommunications. * Everyday experiences of media infrastructure. * Labour and industries associated with telecommunication infrastructure (and the role of maintenance, care, and repair). * Imaginaries and ideologies associated with telecommunications development. * Applications and limitations of existing media studies theories for understanding telecommunications infrastructure. *Information about submission* Proposals should include an abstract of 500 words (not including references), short bios and the names of 2 suggested reviewers. Yes, this was yesterday. Setting up cameras etc left no time for email reminders! The first proper NYC Mesh meetup since feb 2020 included updates on the remarkable progress achieved during the pandemic. Mainly a couple of major NYC public housing installs, and the establishment of a POP at 111 8th Ave, the NYC home of Google. The latter gives the whole network much needed backhaul redundancy, while the former has required the acquisition of fiber skills, and even the first paid employees. The latter made possible by a healthy financial state = $300k+ in the bank. From early days as an ISOC-NY project, launched in 2016 with a Beyond the Net $20k grant, they've come a long way! OxBAT 2022 [Oxford Blockchain, Art & Technology Conference] Blockchain Art and NFTs: Spreading the Wings of Encounter Call for Papers NFTs represent the democratic ideals of blockchain technology and its introduction of a system based on decentralised power while the blockchain itself offers an additional novel medium for blockchain-native art. However, the recent explosion of NFTs has led to much controversy in public, ranging from admiration to astonishment and condemnation, and the intensity of the industry’s commercial success has eclipsed its aesthetic, creative and social potential. The inaugural Oxford Blockchain, Art, and Technology (OxBAT) conference will be held on 26–28 September, 2022 at the University of Oxford. As the first multi-disciplinary conference on the aesthetic, social, and philosophical perspective on blockchain art, it will bring together art historians, artists, social scientists, curators, blockchain developers, and more in an open forum. Thanks - Andrea Guzman Media, Culture & Society themed issue: "Reclaiming the Human in Machine Cultures" A new themed issue of Media, Culture & Society, entitled "Reclaiming the Human in Machine Cultures" and edited by Andrea L Guzman and Simone Natale, has now been published. https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/mcs/44/4 The goal of this themed issue is to draw from the tradition of cultural studies and cultural theory to move toward a conceptualization of culture in which machines are intertwined within human systems of meaning-making. Problematizing notions such as “algorithmic culture” and “machine culture,” contributors provide theoretical reflections and empirical evidence that help reaffirm the centrality of the human in this context.
