When evaluating the trustworthiness of political institutions, public judgments are expected to reflect the quality of government procedures, especially the principles of competency, impartiality and integrity. The most extensive body of cross-national empirical research about these issues has focused largely on established liberal democracies, such as Nordic states, characterised by freedom of the press and media pluralism, as well as affluent post-industrial European societies with highly educated populations. This study theorizes that the accuracy of any public judgments of the trustworthiness of government procedures are likely to be mediated by the information environment in open and closed societies, as well as by the cognitive skills of citizens. About Speaker: Professor Pippa Norris is a comparative political scientist who has taught at Harvard for three decades. She is the Paul F McGuire Lecturer in Comparative Politics at the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and Founding Director of the Electoral Integrity Project, Director of the Global Party Survey, Co-Director of the TrustGov Project and on the Executive of the World Values Survey. Her research compares public opinion and elections, political institutions and cultures, gender politics, and political communications in many countries worldwide. She is ranked the 2nd most cited political scientist worldwide, according to Google scholar. Major career honors include, amongst others, the Skytte prize, IPSA’s Karl Deutsch award, fellowship of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, APSA’s Charles Merriam award and the Samuel Eldersfeld lifetime achievement award, and the PSA’s Sir Isaiah Berlin award. These have emerged from a need to develop joint perspectives, a joint language and technological imagination as prerequisites for participatory approaches and co-design. With our workshop, we seek to create a practice-oriented and reflective space exploring answers to questions like the following ones: What potential does fiction, fairy tales and games carry regarding creative and low-threshold entrances to co design? How do we genuinely co-design without enforcing our, often external, perception on people’s realities and needs? How does creativity in co-design look like thinking from the very beginning, before setting up the research design? We invite researchers, practitioners, activists, and designers (all career stages) who are working in settings that are socially and culturally diverse, who bring together people of a broad age range and who have tried creative approaches in their co-design activities. Working in groups to co-design and further develop creative entrances, this workshop will explore and reflect upon the potential of design fiction, storytelling, and games to foster creativity in co-design activities and to support (technological) imagination. As a result, we plan to co-host together with the participants a digital exhibition with the results of the workshop. Dear colleagues, A reminder that abstracts are soon due for our 20th Community Informatics Research Network Conference November 9-11 at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy. Details below. Cheers, Colin 20 YEARS OF CIRN Examining the past, present, and future of communities and technology Conference | 9 - 11 November 2022, Monash University, Prato, Italy. The theme of the 2022 conference, 20 years of CIRN: Examining the past, present and future of communities and technology aims to both look back at 20 years of the Prato conferences and the rich knowledge, and experience that have emerged from them, but as well, look at new emerging themes and challenges in a very different world. The conference may well be unique as an international long-term reflective event concerned with the internet. We invite referred and non-referred papers and presentations and workshop or panel proposals that can take into account the changes that have occurred with communities and technologies since the earliest days of the internet, as well as accounts of contemporary innovation and challenges across the full range of community informatics interests: libraries, community action and engagement, international development, archives and memory, dis/ability, gender, race & class, identity, and the creative arts.
