Social media have become one of the main channels to inform, interact with, and mobilize citizens. As a result, the use of communication channels, communication styles, and contents as well as organizational structures of parties and movements themselves have changed. Visual content—like memes or videos—has become more important. New political actors like populist parties, social movements, or so-called new civics have entered the political stage in many countries around the world. Micro-targeting, inauthentic user behavior, and the automation of the distribution of political messages influence how citizens perceive politics. Our thematic issue closes research gaps by inviting studies focusing on the role of social media in political and societal mobilization by established political actors such as parties and politicians but also social movements and new civics. Therefore, it focuses on the goal-directed use of platforms, contents, and mechanisms of distribution, including the strengths and possibilities of digital campaigns. However, it does not ignore the risks and dangers by also inviting works on mobilization by means of the intentional spreading of false information, conspiracy narratives, or the dysfunctionalities of algorithms and mismanagement by platforms. The thematic issue aims at contributing to a broader scientific understanding of the political implications of digitalization for political and societal mobilization and insights into how digital instruments could promote or hinder democratic development. Submissions might address (but are not limited to) the following questions: * Which mobilization strategies do different political actors and/or movements use, and which differences and similarities can be identified between different countries and political strands? * (How) do mobilization efforts of social movements and political parties complement or substitute each other? * How do left- and right-wing online activism differ (from other forms of online activism, e.g., that of centrist actors and/or green parties and movements)? * How does (micro-targeted) online advertising influence citizens’ willingness to participate in political processes? * Under which circumstances does “hashtag activism” become impactful? * Under which circumstances does online activism lead to “slacktivism” and when and how is it more impactful? Dear colleagues, Come work with us - We have two new postdoc positions available at our Center at Aarhus University in Denmark – application deadline is 20 June 2022 23:59 CEST: Two postdoc positions in computational analysis of social media and collective behaviour DATALAB – Center for Digital Social Research at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies within the School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in computational analysis of social media communication and collective behaviour. The first postdoc position is affiliated with the research project NORDIS funded by the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), and the second postdoc position is affiliated with SHAPE - Shaping Digital Democracy funded by Aarhus University. Postdoc profiles We are looking for applicants who have growth mindsets and documented experience in computational analysis of human data (preferably social media, but this is not a requirement) with the purpose of investigating human collective behaviour. Furthermore, we are ideally looking for applicants who have advanced skills in Python and classifiers from related fields and at least documented experience with Python and applied machine learning (preferably deep learning and/or NLP models such as BERT or LDA). Experience with API data collection, hidden Markov models (or other change point detection models for postdoc 2), network and time series analysis is not a requirement but would be positively evaluated. The successful applicant will be expected to co-author (with other DATALAB researchers) at least two highly ranked journal articles, one as first author, in the areas of detecting and analysing reactions to fact-checked disinformation on the Ukrainian war in selected EU countries, detecting and analysing super spreaders and potential influence operations across the Nordic countries, the EU and the US (postdoc 1), as well as change point detection and other dynamics of civic collective behaviour on social media (postdoc 2). The successful applicants will be working within an interdisciplinary group of researchers from other fields such as media, information and communication studies, cognitive semiotics, neuroscience and sociology, and your main tasks will be to write articles, process data (in a distributed setting using high-performance computing), qualify the choice of and advance the mathematical models (for example machine learning) and apply relevant statistical analysis. Dear Colleagues, Today on the CaMP anthropology blog, Florian Jaton discusses his book, The Constitution of Algorithms. https://campanthropology.org Best, Ilana A laboratory study that investigates how algorithms come into existence. Algorithms—often associated with the terms *big data*, *machine learning*, or *artificial intelligence*—underlie the technologies we use every day, and disputes over the consequences, actual or potential, of new algorithms arise regularly. In this book, Florian Jaton offers a new way to study computerized methods, providing an account of where algorithms come from and how they are constituted, investigating the practical activities by which algorithms are progressively assembled rather than what they may suggest or require once they are assembled. Drawing on a four-year ethnographic study of a computer science laboratory that specialized in digital image processing, Jaton illuminates the invisible processes that are behind the development of algorithms. Tracing what he terms a set of intertwining courses of actions sharing common finalities, he describes the practical activity of creating algorithms through the lenses of *ground-truthing*, *programming*, and *formulating*. He first presents the building of ground truths, referential repositories that form the material basis for algorithms. Then, after considering programming's resistance to ethnographic scrutiny, he describes programming courses of action he attended at the laboratory. Finally, he offers an account of courses of action that successfully formulated some of the relationships among the data of a ground-truth database, revealing the links between ground-truthing, programming, and formulating activities—entangled processes that lead to the shaping of algorithms. In practice, ground-truthing, programming, and formulating form a whirlwind process, an emergent and intertwined agency.

The 2022 Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture, to be presented in the Hybrid 72nd Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA), May 26-30, in Paris, France, features a conversation with Dr. Crystal Abidin. Dr. Abidin is an anthropologist and ethnographer of Internet culture, focusing her research on influencer cultures, Internet celebrity, online visibility and social media pop culture in the Asia Pacific region. The conversation with Dr. Abidin covers a wide range of topics including Dr. Abidin’s career trajectory, past research, and new projects under way. Dr. Abidin also offers some career advice to junior scholars embarking on a career studying new media. The lecture is a pre-recorded conversation, available online to ICA conference attendees. Activists and scholars can draw on a rich foundation of theoretical and pragmatic work that imagines and enacts alternative futures to the dictates of racial capitalism and settler colonialism. The solidarity economy, for example, is a framework <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__solidarityeconomy.us_d…> that seeks to network and build alternative economic practices and structures based on shared values that include cooperation, sustainability, equity, participatory democracy, and pluralism. Just transition centers justice and equity, along with reparations and redress for past harms, in the transition from an extractive economy to a regenerative economy. Abolition proposes the end of policing, imprisonment, and surveillance as punitive practices and creating alternative forms of care, repair, and transformation to replace them. As university workers, we struggle with how universities have historically created knowledge and conducted “community engagement” for state and corporate needs while ameliorating tensions and threats to the legitimacy of dominant orders. We believe that academic workers can be disloyal to these histories, but only by theorizing and acting against how institutions structure our labor, knowledge, and relationships. The broad aims of this workshop are to gather university workers involved in technology and others who have a stake in these issues to share knowledge, develop stronger analyses of our movement-aligned work, and build relationships for future work and organizing. As conveners, we are researchers who engage issues of technology in alignment with social movements, community organizations, and unions. We draw lessons from and hope to be accountable to frontline communities, especially working class communities and Black, Indigenous, and people of color who are most directly harmed by technologies of surveillance, gentrification, and extraction. We seek proposals that offer grounded accounts and analyses of topics such as: Role of technology and technologists and their practices in social and solidarity movements Solidarity economies, worker-cooperatives, regenerative economies, economic democracy, etc. Pilot projects, technology experiments, and the role of the public sector in authorizing or governing them Strategies to push back against surveillance, labor exploitation, environment, whether escape, structural change, or resistance, for overcoming these forces in the near- and long-term Transformative scholarship, in theory and practice Histories of academic complicity and violence (e.g., predictive policing, unaccountable research) Just transitions, climate justice, environmental racism Transportation and mobility justice (rider and worker equity, accessibility, environmental effects) Alternative metrics and evaluation practices for tech and economic development Abolitionist technology practices and liberatory design approaches Analysis of and responses to false solutions (e.g., “false climate solutions” <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__climatefalsesolutions.…>) proposed as answers to social movement demands Political, infrastructural, and/or ideological issues do we see as posing a threat to organizing alternatives What to do about personal or institutional complicities and harms, whether mitigation or means of repair (e.g. transformative justice) Confirmed participants include Kendra Albert (Berkman Klein Center, Cyberlaw Clinic), Sig Giordano (Kennesaw State University), Sarah T Hamid (Carceral Tech Resistance Network), Wayne Yang (UCSD). Participation logistics: this workplace will take place virtually, tentatively scheduled for August 18th and 19th 2022 (to include international participants, we aim for early morning Pacific Time). We ask participants to submit a provocation of no more than 1000 words, whether an essay, analysis, story, or work of art by June 20. The submission should speak to how your liberation is tied up in the work described and what harms, however unintentionally, your positionality might risk in this work. These will be circulated among workshop participants in advance, for discussion during the workshop.
