Thee call for book proposals for the CPCP series is out. For 2026, the main topic is: Hybrid Media Worlds: Practices, Actors, and Cultural Negotiations. This Call for Book Proposals for the *Communication Processes and Cultural Practices* series invites scholars to explore hybridization as a key analytical lens for examining contemporary media practices. We welcome proposals that critically investigate hybrid forms of consumption and production, shifting modes of participation and recognition, and the cultural, social, and political implications of living and acting within hybrid media environments. The series welcomes both single-authored monographs and edited collections that offer original theoretical perspectives, robust empirical research, or innovative methodological approaches. Proposals may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: - Hybrid forms of media production: between professionalization, platformization, and informal creativity - Consumption as participation, labour, and identity performance - The blurring of roles: audiences, users, producers, prosumers, influencers, and cultural intermediaries - Hybrid cultural economies: visibility, reputation, data, affect, and monetization - Platform cultures and the reconfiguration of creative and communicative practices - Media hybridization across genres, formats, and industries (journalism, entertainment, art, activism, education) - Algorithmic mediation and its impact on practices of recognition and self-positioning - Hybrid publics, communities, and networked forms of belonging - Methodological hybridization in media and communication research - Power, inequalities, and exclusions in hybrid media practices Interdisciplinary approaches drawing from communication and media studies, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, digital humanities, and related fields are strongly encouraged. The Demos and Tools Track at VARIABILITY 2026 invites compelling live presentations and submissions of innovative tools, practical demonstrations, and curated datasets that support research and practice in software and systems product line engineering, reuse, and configuration. This track provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to showcase academic or commercial tools, demonstrations of novel techniques, and datasets that contribute to the advancement of software and systems reuse, software product lines and configurable systems. Accepted contributions will be featured both during the main conference (via oral presentations) and in interactive exhibition spaces (e.g., demo booths or poster/demo sessions during breaks). Each submission must include: • A paper of up to 4 pages, including references and figures. • An optional appendix of up to 2 pages (not included in the proceedings), describing the planned live demonstration or dataset usage scenario. • A link to a short video (max. 5 minutes) illustrating the tool, demonstration, or dataset in action. Papers should briefly describe the theoretical foundation, with a focus on practical aspects such as software architecture, implementation decisions, usage methodology, and validation through case studies or benchmarks. Public availability of tools and datasets (preferably under open-source/open-data licenses) is strongly encouraged. Where availability is not possible, submissions should explain the reasons. I just wanted to send out a reminder for the upcoming AI justice lecture, as part of the community lecture series run by the School of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London. The upcoming talk is today at 17:00-18:30 (GMT), with Professor Sanjay Sharma (University of Warwick) discussing his research on Inclusive Futures? Radical Ethics & Transformative Justice for Responsible AI, part of the Bridging Responsible AI Divides (BRAID) Fellowship. This will be held in person on the Goldsmiths campus at the Professor Stuart Hall Building (LG01) from 17:00-18:30. This talk will discuss how we can trouble AI, including through centring voices and knowledges which have been excluded from AI’s development, challenging dominant narratives of what ‘responsible AI’ looks like and whose interests are served by these visions. Drawing on critical data studies, speculative design, and abolitionist thought, Inclusive Futures brings to the fore an essential yet under-researched aspect of contemporary AI systems: their increasingly colonial and racialised ideologies. In participation with community-led social justice organisations and networks advocating for equity in AI, Inclusive Futures employs speculative, participatory methods for re-imagining AI from a bottom-up, justice-oriented perspective. Apologies for x-posting Dear Air-L list members Dave O'Brien, myself, and Riza Batista-Navarro have a PhD studentship opportunity on 'Artifical Inequality: AI and its Impact on the UK Creative Industries' at the University of Manchester, UK. About the Project Inequality in cultural and creative industries (CCIs) is a very well-established issue (e.g. Brook et al 2025). Poor working conditions, uncertain and precarious careers, discrimination and lack of diversity, alongside challenges to funding and business models are all key areas in recent research. These structural issues sit alongside work designed to understand the experiences of creative workers as they navigate these social, economic and cultural conditions. Artificial Intelligence (AI), widely defined, is another new challenge for CCIs. Debates over AI and CCIs, whether as a positive influence on creativity and productivity or questions over IP ownership, threats to sustainable careers, and other negative impacts, are increasingly prominent in the research literature (e.g. Lee 2024, Lee et al 2024). However, AI’s impact on the structural inequalities shaping CCIs is still yet to be settled. Whilst advocates contend that AI will open up new creative opportunities for those within and beyond CCIs, critics argue that AI will only further disrupt UK creative industries operating in a difficult national and global economic climate.. Alongside this, work examining workers’ experiences is also less well-established, despite the speed at which creative AI platforms and features (e.g. Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, Suno) have become part of the wider creative landscape since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022. The potential for research on issues of AI, CCIs and inequality are especially urgent in the UK. The UK’s industrial strategy has highlighted creative industries as one of eight priority sectors. It has also stressed the positive, transformative, impact of AI on the sector. At the same time, inequalities are also an important part of policy for CCIs, suggesting a tension that is underdeveloped in policy thinking, as well as in the literature. Key features of this studentship * Receive a fully funded studentship covering tuition fees and an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (previously 2025/26 £20,780 per year) for 3.5 years. * Research Training and Support Grant (RTSG): £3,000 total over 3.5 years. * CreativeAI studentship methods training and cohort-building activities. *Webinar: Strengthening Gender, Equity and Rights in** the East Mediterranean* *National Digital Health Strategies* The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Strategy on Digital Health 2020-2025 (now extended to 2027) promotes a more robust digital health governance system, including through the development of national digital health strategies. To successfully operationalise the Global Strategy across territories in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Regional Strategy for Fostering Digital Health in the EMR (2023-2027) encourages the formulation of national digital health strategies aligned with broader national and public health priorities. Today, fifteen out of twenty-one countries in the region have adopted national strategies, with others under way.
