Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a forthcoming Special Issue of Communication and the Public (https://journals.sagepub.com/home/ctp) titled: Co-Producing Environmental Publics: Technology, Communication, and Ecological Transformation In recent decades, environmental challenges—ranging from climate change and air pollution to biodiversity loss and resource scarcity—have increasingly shaped not only policy agendas but also the very texture of public life globally. Responding to these crises, digital technologies—including sensor networks, big data analytics, algorithmic systems, and artificial intelligence—have become constitutive elements in how environmental issues are rendered visible, knowable, and actionable. These technologies do more than document ecological change. They actively intervene in the communicative infrastructures through which publics emerge, take shape, and act. Systems of sensing, modeling, and prediction increasingly define what counts as “environmental risk,” thereby shaping understandings of responsibility, urgency, and agency. At the same time, these infrastructures operate unevenly: algorithmic filtering, platform governance, and unequal access to data intensify existing inequalities in visibility, participation, and recognition—particularly in contexts of rapid or uneven environmental degradation. As a result, environmental publics are increasingly co-produced through the interaction of ecological conditions, technological systems, and communicative practices. Yet many existing theories of publicness and communication—largely premised on stable media environments and human-centered deliberation—struggle to account for publics constituted through algorithms, sensors, platforms, and predictive ecologies. This special issue seeks to advance scholarly understanding of how technological systems reshape environmental communication and how ecological crises, in turn, reconfigure the communicative, institutional, and imaginative infrastructures of public life. By foregrounding the mutually constitutive relationship between technology, publics, and ecological transformation, the issue aims to deepen theoretical debates on public formation, algorithmic governance, mediated knowledge production, and collective action in an era of planetary uncertainty. Scope and Themes We welcome conceptual, methodological, and empirical contributions that examine how digital technologies mediate environmental governance, identity formation, activism, and the circulation of ecological knowledge. Contributions may engage with one or more of the following (non-exhaustive) themes: * Algorithmic infrastructures and the formation of environmental publics * Datafication, environmental knowledge, and public authority * Public communication of climate models, predictive ecologies, and digital simulations * Networked environmental activism and hybrid public mobilization * Communicative agency among scientists, Indigenous communities, and climate advocates * Surveillance ecologies, risk governance, and public trust * Digital platforms, environmental legitimacy, and contestations of power * Environmental media propaganda, misinformation, and AI-generated narratives We especially encourage submissions from underrepresented regions (Asia, Africa, Latin America, Indigenous contexts) and interdisciplinary perspectives across communication studies, STS, environmental governance, and political ecology. *** First Call for Replication and Negative Results *** 37th IEEE International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 2026) October 20-23, 2026, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina Limassol, Cyprus https://cyprusconferences.org/issre2026/ The Replications and Negative Results (RENE) Track has been introduced in the software engineering community for a while and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. This year, we establish this track at ISSRE and invite researchers to (1) replicate results from previous papers and (2) publish studies with important and relevant negative or null results (results that fail to show an effect, yet demonstrate the research paths that did not pay off). We also encourage the publication of the negative results or replicable aspects of previously published work. For example, authors of a published paper reporting a working solution for a given problem can document in a “negative results paper” other (failed) attempts they made before defining the working solution they published. • Replication studies. The papers in this category must go beyond simply re- implementing an algorithm and/or re-running the artifacts provided by the original paper. Such submissions should at least apply the approach to new data sets (open-source or proprietary). A replication study should clearly report on results that the authors were able to replicate, as well as on the aspects of the work that were not replicable. • Negative results papers. We seek papers that report on negative results. We seek negative results for all types of program comprehension research in any empirical area (qualitative, quantitative, case study, experiment, etc.). For example, did your controlled experiment not show an improvement over the baseline? Even if negative, results obtained are still valuable when they are either not obvious or disprove widely accepted wisdom. Evaluation Criteria Both Replication Studies and Negative Results submissions will be evaluated according to the following standards: • Depth and breadth of the empirical studies • Clarity of writing • Appropriateness of conclusions • Amount of useful, actionable insights • Availability of artifacts • Underlying methodological rigor. A negative result due primarily to misaligned expectations or due to lack of statistical power (small samples) is not a good submission. The negative result should be a result of a lack of effect, not a lack of methodological rigor. Most importantly, we expect replication studies to clearly point out the artifacts upon which the study is built, and to provide the links to all the artifacts in the submission (the only exception will be given to those papers that replicate the results on proprietary datasets that can not be publicly released). Submission Instructions Submissions must be original, in the sense that the findings and writing have not been previously published or under consideration elsewhere. However, as either replication studies or negative results, some overlap with previous work is expected. Please make clear in the paper the overlap with and difference from previous work. All submissions must be in PDF format and conform, at time of submission, to the IEEE Computer Society Format Guidelines: (https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates) Authors are strongly encouraged to print the PDF and review it for integrity (fonts, symbols, equations, etc.) before submission, as defective printing can undermine a paper’s chance of success. By submitting to the ISSRE RENE Track, authors acknowledge that they are aware of and agree to be bound by the IEEE Plagiarism FAQ. In particular, papers submitted to the RENE track must not have been published elsewhere and must not be under review or submitted for review elsewhere whilst under consideration for ISSRE 2026. Contravention of this concurrent submission policy will be deemed a serious breach of scientific ethics, and appropriate action will be taken in all such cases. To check for double submission and plagiarism issues, the chairs reserve the right to (1) share the list of submissions with the PC Chairs of other conferences with overlapping review periods and (2) use external plagiarism detection software, under contract to the IEEE, to detect violations of these policies. Submission Length: The ISSRE RENE Track accepts submissions of two lengths: (1) New replication studies and new descriptions of negative results should have a length of up to 10 pages, plus 2 pages which may only contain references. (2) Negative results documented during the preparation of previously published work by the authors should be described in up to 5 pages, plus 1 page, which may only contain references (e.g., as previously mentioned, authors of a published paper can document negative results they obtained while working on it, such as methodologically sound solutions that did not work). Important note 1: Both types of papers (replication and negative results) will be included as part of the main conference proceedings. Important note 2: The RENE track does not follow a double-anonymous review process. Publication and Presentation Upon notification of acceptance, all authors of accepted papers will receive further instructions for preparing the camera-ready versions of their submissions. If a submission is accepted, at least one author of the paper is required to have a full registration for ISSRE 2026, attend the conference, and present the paper in person. All accepted papers will be published in the conference electronic proceedings. The presentation is expected to be delivered in person, unless this is impossible due to travel limitations (e.g., related to health or visa). Details about the presentations will follow the notifications. The official publication date is the date the proceedings are made available in the IEEE Digital Libraries. ARC 2026 Planning Committee Jacob Rawlins, Roxanne Aftanas, Lenny Grant, Kathryn Northcut, Sara Parks, Matt Sharp, and Stephen Carradini. -- CALL FOR PROPOSALS The Applied Rhetoric Collaborative (ARC) is an interdisciplinary group of scholars who practice, teach, and study applied rhetoric. Applied rhetoric is a rhetorically grounded method for and study of action-oriented research, teaching, and service in live situations that solves problems and achieves positive ends in communities. ARC offers a para-professional space for support, feedback, collaboration, and encouragement to those at any stage of their careers (from students to retirees) who seek to solve problems and achieve positive ends in communities using applied rhetoric. Our summer symposia allow us to examine how rhetoric is enacted in our professional and public spaces. Symposium presentations have covered the realms of applied rhetoric (AR) in healthcare, academic programming, digital spaces, physical public spaces, the media, and the classroom. Topics have been as varied as public memory projects, rhetorical activism, free speech rules, international censorship, and historical legal testimony. Since the symposium began in 2018, the world we live in has dramatically changed in many ways—for better and for worse. Accordingly, ARC sees a need to reconsider how we conceptualize how we “do” rhetorical work in our communities and classrooms. ARC’s fifth summer symposium will continue to build on the foundations laid during our previous meetings, as we come together to further develop and define the ideas of applied rhetoric. To do this, we ask symposium participants to emphasize how people (researchers, teachers, practitioners, activists, leaders, community members, and everyone in between) bring rhetoric into the world. We are interested in diverse works that discuss how we bring rhetoric into the world. Potential topics of interest may include, but are not limited to: * What does it look like for academics to take their knowledge of rhetoric into public spaces? * How can we, as both community members and rhetoricians, be a force for good in the world as we put our rhetoric into action? * How do community members enact rhetoric and rhetorical principles to get things done? * How do rhetorical principles affect ideas, events, and/or outcomes in nonprofit organizations? * How do people enact rhetoric in legal spaces for the good or ill of all involved? * How do academics encourage and enable students to enact rhetoric out in the world, either on their own or as part of an academic enterprise? * How does one learn to do rhetoric out in the world? How does one teach students to do rhetoric out in the world? * How do people enact rhetoric online to affect positive or negative change? How can positive change be further amplified or developed? How can negative change be combated or counteracted? * How do people balance the desire to enact rhetoric out in the world with the other professional and non-professional commitments that they have? The Applied Rhetoric Symposium was built on foundations of collaboration, coordination, networking, and friendship. In the symposium, we seek to embody these concepts by providing community-building opportunities for those who enact and study applied rhetoric. The symposium itself consists of multiple plenary sessions focused on the presentation of scholarly work to an audience of colleagues. The presentations consist of new “works in progress,” concrete results of established research, and/or what we call “Quick Hits—Rhetoric in Practice” (all described below) with ample time to discuss with the audience after each session. FORMATS Works in Progress (30 minutes each) Not a presentation or a workshop, Works in Progress sessions are a time to get feedback on how to finish a project that seems stuck or how to start working on a promising idea that seems overwhelming. Traditional (20 minutes each) You know what we are talking about. Strict time limits, but these presentations will be followed by an extended open discussion after each set of three traditional presentations. NEW THIS YEAR! The Write-to-Publish Track The Write-to-Publish track offers a pathway from conference presentation to peer-reviewed publication in POROI. This track integrates conference vetting with the journal's peer review process. Presentations will be scheduled with Traditional presentations (20 minutes each). Quick Hits: Rhetoric in Practice (10 minutes each) A lightning round of sorts in which participants review or critique applications of rhetoric in their work, communities, or society at large. Quick hits will be followed by open discussion sessions. HYBRID DELIVERY We are committed to making the ARC Symposium accessible both in-person and online via hybrid delivery methods. Selected submissions will form a coherent thematic collection that advances scholarly conversations at the intersection of rhetorical inquiry and contemporary applied rhetoric issues. Submission Requirements For Conference Consideration: Submit a drafted manuscript or manuscript proposal of at least 3000 words or equivalent. Multi-modal submissions are welcome. Dear AoIR colleagues, I’m writing to ask whether anyone is aware of PhD opportunities, advertised or not yet formally posted, starting within the next year, particularly in areas related to internet research, data science, computational social science, or digital culture. I’m currently based in Toronto, Canada, and in the final months of my master’s degree in data science at the University of Colorado Boulder. My background spans applied data analysis, data engineering, and research-oriented projects. Consequently, platform-side Trust & Safety—a professional field dedicated to user safety and platform integrity—has become indispensable. Though largely behind-the-scenes, T&S teams are charged with enhancing the brand perceptions and protecting the user bases of large platforms and startups alike. It’s a unique practice that is both a guarded specialty as well as a matter of public interest. > > But what do we really know about the history of trust and safety (broadly construed) or the development of platform-side Trust & Safety? While related topics have begun to garner more public attention, scholarly work that thoughtfully historicizes the development of the field and/or profession, the role of companies and/or platforms, the nature of the relationships between a variety of stakeholders in the space, the evolving nature of practices, processes, tools, and/or products, and historical precedents for and impacts of regulatory acts is lacking. Given the rapidly evolving nature of the ecosystem and the centrality of work across the whole of the internet—from domain registration to content moderation—we propose a special issue of Internet Histories dedicated to topics directly related to historicizing all aspects of trust and safety: the ecosystem, field, domain, practice, protocols and tools, and profession. We encourage authors to interrogate trust and safety from a range of perspectives, prioritizing academic rigor and historical dimensions. > > Possible topics may include: > > The professionalization of T&S. > Early platform-side T&S teams and operations. > How trust and safety work has evolved across specific regions and geographies. > Histories of T&S beyond content moderation (i.e., other types of products/services such as ride-share, dating, and services apps; online marketplaces; and internet-connected devices). > Various harm/risk areas (e.g., child safety, terrorism/extremism, elections, or mis/disinformation) across decades. > How early T&S addressed technological impacts/affordances for communities in the 2000s, 2010s (before the term became widely adopted). > Origins and evolutions as maintenance or care work. > Gender and the history of T&S work (particularly in areas like child safety or technology-facilitated gender-based violence). > The role of nonprofit organizations and civil society in the shaping of platform-side T&S. > The history of regulatory decisions and their impact on current and future practices. > How, when, and why law enforcement and national security became involved in trust and safety. > The impacts of platform-side T&S on community moderators and managers. > This special issue will explore these questions—and many others—through a range of theoretical frames (for example, postcolonial, genealogical, historical materialist, feminist, STS, organizational development, cybernetic, international relations, disruption and hype cycles, world systems, globalization) and approaches (for example, archival, oral history, historiographic, commodity chain, ethnographic, social network, policy sciences) as proposed by authors. *** Call for Participation *** The Annual ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2026) March 23-26, 2026, 5* Coral Beach Hotel & Resort, Paphos, Cyprus https://iui.hosting.acm.org/2026/ (*** Early Registration Deadline: February 13, 2026 ***) The 2026 ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI) is the annual premier venue, where researchers and practitioners meet and discuss state-of-the-art advances at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Ideal IUI submissions should address practical HCI challenges using machine intelligence and discuss both computational and human-centric aspects of such methodologies, techniques and systems. This year we had a record number of submissions, so we have a record number of accepted papers (114), a record number of posters and demos (53) and we hope for a record number of participants. Furthermore, we have 8 workshops and 5 tutorials. Finally, the technical program will feature two keynotes, by Antonio Kruger on the role of HCI in trusted A.I. and Pattie Maes on designing A.I. interaction for human flourishing.
