The Work in the Age of Intelligent Machine (WAIM) Research Coordination Network<https://waim.network/> announces a working conference to be held 6-7 June 2022 in Washington DC (hold the date!). Travel grants are available for selected participants (see below). The WAIM network aims to promote disciplinary convergence in relation to work in the age of intelligent machines. The use of intelligent machines—digital technologies that feature data-driven forms of customization, learning, and autonomous action—is rapidly growing and has and will continue to impact most if not all industries and work domains. Convergence is defined by the National Science Foundation as “the deep integration of knowledge, techniques, and expertise from multiple fields to form new and expanded frameworks” (NSF 17-065<https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2017/nsf17065/nsf17065.jsp>). By embracing research concepts and approaches from other disciplines, researchers transform our emergent conceptual foundations and concomitant strategies in relation to the transformation of work via intelligent machines. The conference will feature a set of panels bringing together leading researchers from diverse approaches to demonstrate the value of convergent research on work and intelligent machines. It will as well include small-group discussions bringing together authors and a mentor for discussion around work in progress papers and grant proposals. These groups will provide both feedback for developing and refining convergent ideas, as well as a place to make sense of how to navigate the world’s “new normal” as a researcher. Attendance at the conference is free (though capacity limited). Registration details will be posted soon. We also invite submissions to present at the conference in three categories: 1) Position statements from panelists on the topic of intelligent machines and their impacts on and implications for work. 2) Work-in-progress papers for discussion that address intelligent machines and their impacts on and implications for work. We encourage participation from any disciplinary perspective, including (but not limited to) urban planning, computer science, sociology, information systems, transportation, economics, psychology, law, media studies, engineering, public policy, artificial intelligence—any perspective that can help foster convergent thinking around this increasingly important topic in our society. We are seeking library privacy policies from special libraries that reflect a diversity of institution sizes, budgets, and missions. We are conducting a document analysis of library privacy policies to gain insight into how (or if) library policy currently contemplates the privacy concerns of sexual and gender minority individuals as different from the privacy concerns of cis-gender heterosexual people. In addition, we are conducting interviews with the purpose of understanding whether emerging information professionals are adequately educated with regards to information policy, and to determine what gaps exist with regards to library employees’ ability to meaningfully participate in policy-related work. We would like to invite you to participate in a remote interview through Zoom to discuss your experiences, as a library employer/supervisor, of how well library and information science (LIS) students are prepared for policy challenges around privacy of LGBTQI2SA+ people during the COVID 19 pandemic. Participation in this study is voluntary and would take approximately forty-five to sixty (45 - 60) minutes of your time. [Reminder] IAMCR 2022 pre-conference (hybrid) - Big Data in Communication Research: A contextual turn? https://iamcr.org/beijing2022/big-data Organized by the University of Copenhagen and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), in collaboration with the Computational Methods Division, the International Communication Association. Description: Recent advances in communication studies have seen much greater attention paid to the development, appropriation, and reflection on computational methods for analyzing large and heterogeneous data. Despite its considerable contributions, big data analytics has been criticized for the lack of contextual consideration for a long time. In other words, scholarships with computational methods may suffer from the pitfall of not unpacking, recognizing, and theorizing the richness of associated contextual elements in (big) data. This preconference aims to address such issues by advancing a context-aware approach in computational methods and by articulating an interrogation of contextual elements in using computational methods. A context-aware approach in computational methods is particularly valuable to IAMCR as a worldwide professional organization in the field of media and communication research, as this approach recognizes a reality where people communicate in diverse ways ag ainst different contexts. We thereby invite original and rigorous contributions and reflections based on big data and contextual analysis. We hope to engage with opportunities and challenges of advancing context-aware approaches in computational methods. The submissions can be theoretical or based on empirical studies, but would also include innovative suggestions to overcome research challenges like the lack of contextual consideration. Similarly to the ways in which contemporary problems exceed disciplinary boundaries, and require heterogeneous approaches in order to be productively understood, the future orientation of our strategies for addressing those problems must engage with the full scalar spectrum of our planetary existence. Global crises such as pandemics or climate change disturb the human comfort of the mesoscale and require us to grapple with the underlying material reality, including molecular as well as global processes. The COVID-19 pandemic proved that the biological, chemical, and epidemiological reality is indifferent to the cultural and political narratives conjectured by the human vectors of transmission. A post-pandemic world needs to learn the lessons from this ‘revenge of the real’ (Bratton, 2021) and recognise the complexity of the world which cannot be reduced to myopic projections and illusions. As global society is affected by ‘mega processes’, our orientation towards the future should be guided by reason, and a planetary politics which exceeds the logics of the nation-state and includes the whole physical universe (Mbembe, 2019). In order to access different scalar perspectives, humans have always constructed mediating devices. Instruments such as the telescope or the microscope provided an insight into the scale of reality beyond human visual perception, and demonstrated that ‘the invisible makes up a continuum of reality with the visible’ (Blumenberg, 1987, p. 618). More recent examples of scalar media include the James Webb Space Telescope, mediating the spatial and temporal scale of the universe through an analysis of infrared light, as well as potentially shedding light on the local condition of far-off planets. It contributes to a wider process in which scientists use numerical data from telescopes and satellites to help imagine worlds and places which can be made sense of on a human scale (Messeri, 2016). Computational technologies also help us conceptualise some of the most pressing scalar problems. Inequalities related to labour relations and the distribution of resources can be traced through the mineral materialities of media devices and the cartographies of electronic waste (Parikka, 2015), whilst the concept of ‘climate change’ is an epistemological accomplishment of planetary-scale computation (Bratton, 2019). The history of media and technologies is a history of evolving modes and scales of perception and knowledge, and cultural texts such as *Powers of Ten, Fantastic Voyage, Alice in Wonderland*, and *Gulliver’s Travels* have been discussed as motivating thinking about scale (Horton, 2013, 2020; DiCaglio, 2020, 2021). Recent scholarship has also emphasized the necessity for developing a theory and a vocabulary of scale itself, foregrounding the ongoing negotiations between scalar alterity and scalar access (Horton, 2020), and placing scale ‘at the intersection of a transformation of the world and a transformation of ourselves’ (DiCaglio, 2021, p. 9). With this conference, our ambition is to map the broad spectrum of frameworks and attitudes towards scale, reflecting on how scalar thinking should orient our visions towards the future. We are interested in the role of scalar media, technologies, scientific theories, models and concepts in confronting the scalar disjunction between human sensory and cognitive capacities, and the scale of reality independent of our perception. We believe these questions are crucial to developing the multi-scalar thinking required to address some of the most urgent global issues including automation, planetary governance, or the climate crisis. This conference will therefore explore ways of framing the problem of mediating scale, and the stakes involved in addressing epistemological barriers to facing contemporary problems at an appropriate scale. We welcome contributions from across disciplines whose work is relevant to the question of mediating scale. Call for Papers - Deadline extended 1st Workshop on Novel Evaluation Approaches for Text Classification Systems on Social Media Co-located with ICWSM 2022, 6 June 2022, Hybrid format - Atlanta, Georgia (US) and online https://neatclass-workshop.github.io/ The automatic or semiautomatic analysis of textual data is a key approach to analyse the massive amounts of user-generated content online, from the identification of sentiment in text and topic classification to the detection of abusive language, misinformation or propaganda. However, the development of such systems faces a crucial challenge. Static benchmarking datasets and performance metrics are the primary method for measuring progress in the field, and the publication of research on new systems typically requires demonstrating an improvement over state-of-the-art approaches in this way. Yet, these performance metrics can obscure critical failings in current models. Improvements in metrics often do not reflect improvements in the real-world performance of models. There is clearly a need to rethink performance evaluation for text classification and analysis systems to be usable and trustable. If unreliable systems achieve astonishing scores with traditional metrics, how do we recognise progress when we see it? The goal of the Workshop on Novel Evaluation Approaches for Text Classification Systems on Social Media (NEATCLasS) is to promote the development and use of novel metrics for abuse detection, hate speech recognition, sentiment analysis and similar tasks within the community, to better be able to measure whether models really improve upon the state of the art, and to encourage a wide range of models to be tested on these new metrics. Recently there have been attempts to address the problem of benchmarks and metrics that do not represent performance well. For example, in abusive language detection, there are both static datasets of hard-to-detect examples (Röttger et al. 2021) and dynamic approaches for generating such examples (Calabrese et al. 2021). On the platform DynaBench (Kiela et al. 2021), benchmarks are dynamic and constantly updated with hard-to-classify examples, avoiding overfitting a predetermined dataset. However, these approaches only capture a tiny fraction of issues with benchmarking. There is still much work to do. For the first edition of the workshop on Novel Evaluation Approaches for Text Classification Systems (NEATCLasS) we welcome submissions discussing such new evaluation approaches, introducing new or refining existing ones, promoting the use of novel metrics for abuse detection, sentiment analysis and similar tasks within the community. Furthermore, the workshop will promote discussion on the importance, potential and danger of disagreement in tasks that require subjective judgements. This discussion will also focus on how to evaluate human annotations, and how to find the most suitable set of annotators (if any) for a given instance and task. The workshop will solicit, among others, research papers about * Issues with current evaluation metrics and benchmarking datasets * New evaluation metrics * User-centred (qualitative or quantitative) evaluation of social media text analysis tools * Adaptations and translations of novel evaluation metrics for other languages * New datasets for benchmarking * Increasing data quality in benchmarking datasets, e.g., avoidance of selection bias, identification of suitable expert human annotators for tasks involving subjective judgements * Systems that facilitate dynamic evaluation and benchmarking * Models that perform better at hard-to-classify instances and novel evaluation metrics such as AAA, DynaBench and HateCheck * Bias, error analysis and model diagnostics * Phenomena not captured by existing evaluation metrics (such as models making the right predictions for the wrong reason) * Approaches to mitigating bias and common errors * Alternative designs for NLP competitions that evaluate a wide range of model characteristics (such as bias, error analysis, cross-domain performance) * Challenges of downstream applications (in industry, computational social science, computational communication science, and others) and reflections on how these challenges can be captured in evaluation metrics Format and Submissions The workshop will take place as a full-day meeting on 6 June. Participants will be invited to trial an innovative format for paper presentations: presenters will be given 5 minutes to describe their research questions and hypotheses, and a group discussion will start after that. Then, presenters will be given 5 more minutes to describe their method and results, followed by a new group discussion about the interpretation and implications of such results. In the afternoon there will be collaborative group activities to bring researchers together and collect ideas for new evaluation approaches and future work in the field. We will discuss how we can organise competitions when there are multiple evaluation metrics and benchmarking datasets are dynamic. We invite research papers (8 pages), position and short papers (4 pages), and demo papers (2 pages). Submissions must be original and should not have been published previously or be under consideration for publication while being evaluated for this workshop. Submissions will be evaluated by the program committee based on the quality of the work and its fit to the workshop themes. All submissions should be double-blind and a high-resolution PDF of the paper should be uploaded to the EasyChair submission site (link below) before the paper submission deadline. All papers must be submitted, and formatted in AAAI two-column, camera-ready style. Authors of accepted papers will have the opportunity to publish their papers through workshop proceedings by the AAAI Press. We are delighted to announce that the Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute is currently accepting applications. After a two year break due to covid, we are looking forward to welcoming participants and speakers back to Oxford the first two weeks of August. Join us to discuss contemporary issues of global media policy over breakfast, during seminars, and on long walks through the Oxford countryside! The course for 2022 will focus on Technology and Policy During Times of Crisis. We will examine key issues in media law and policy- topics include AI and online content moderation of extreme speech; internet shutdowns during elections and conflict; public diplomacy in a time of mis/disinformation; big data and humanitarian interventions; social media and migration; and innovation in the global south. With the participation of speakers from around the world, we will be exploring media policy in current events such as the escalating crisis in Ukraine, media development under the Taliban in Afghanistan, and online hate speech and conflict in Ethiopia. We will also use our vantage point from the UK to discuss emerging issues in the EU and engage with local actors including Ofcom and the BBC. As with institutes in the past, we will have speakers from across Oxford, as well as prominent guests from policy and government, and the private sector.
