Dear Colleagues, We would like to invite you to submit an abstract to our 4S open panel entitled Power After AI: Governmentality in the Age of Intelligent Machines. We are particularly looking for conference papers that critically address the historical and epistemic perspectives on AI, ethnographic and practice-based research and, speculative or experimental engagements to reconfigure and rethink AI both in the global South and North. We strongly encourage colleagues from the global South to send an abstract. Kindly note that you have until April 14, 2022 to submit an abstract through the 4S website. CFP Special issue of Fastcapitalism Academic Automation, Machine Un/Learning and Artificial Non/Intelligences, Over the last 70 years, computational and networked media have become deeply integrated with higher education and have slowly adopted and integrated various technologies. The newest generation of technologies engaging higher education centers around what is popularly called artificial intelligence, otherwise known as machine learning. Machine learning creates models that self-design solutions that may include interaction, prediction, and other simulatable aspects. In other words, it is an attempt to automate certain processes. This special issue invites papers that engage with technological automation, machine un/learning, and artificial non/intelligence in the academic context. It seeks critical papers that examine questions around automatic grading, artificial teaching assistants, robotic instructors, other educational technologies, and the transformation of the student and professor roles concerning these technologies. This call for papers also seeks papers that engage these technologies in other academic roles, such as research or service. How are these technologies mediating different academic functions? Who benefits from these technologies? And who is privileged by them? How will these technologies change undergraduate education or graduate education? It asks authors to consider the roles of craft, artistry, and humanity in those roles. Is there an argument to be made for automation in the academy? Is there an argument to be made for AI/Machine learning in the academy? What kind of relations do these establish? Following Ivan Illich, should we rethink our relations to develop tools and systems that treat us as human, perhaps even more human than our current system? *Everyday algorithms – **Algocount Final Event, Milan, 7 July 2022* *Deadline: 8 April 2022 by midnight* This international conference aims at exploring the role algorithms play in the formation of public opinion from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The conference is set in the context of the *Algocount* project ( www.algocount.org) financed by Fondazione Cariplo, conducted by the University of Milan, Department of Social and Political Sciences and Density Design, Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci, Milan. The project seeks to expand the current understanding of how recommendation and personalization algorithms are perceived as key mediators in the access to news and informational content by ordinary users. The conference welcomes contributions that critically reflect on the unfolding of what we define as the ‘algorithmic public opinion’. With this term we intend to grasp the algorithmically-driven processes by which certain issues become a salient matter of public opinion, and the central role recommendation and personalization algorithms play as gatekeeping infrastructures through which individuals access information, produce their opinions and consolidate their social and political views. We invite participants from various intellectual traditions and streams of research, including media studies, sociology, information design, information science, science and technology studies, history of technology, computing and anthropology, human-computer interaction and political philosophy, to participate in an open debate around these issues. Ethnographic explorations of hierarchies of taste and legitimization mechanisms in contemporary cultural consumption Submit your paper here: https://easaonline.org/conferences/easa2022/programme#11547 Many accounts of the transformation of current societies pay attention to the falling currency of highbrow culture, together with its diminishing association with the upper classes ( DiMaggio and Mukhtar 2004). The mass media and upper-class' acceptance of popular culture is assumed to dissolve the structures of legitimation and leave the effect of cultural capital as an 'echo' of the past. Peterson's (1992) observation about the changing patterns of upper-class taste, from narrow, highbrow culture to a wide range of diverse cultural interests (omnivorous taste) has sparked much discussion (see e.g. Lena 2016; Warde, Wright, and Gayo-Cal 2007). While the issue of omnivorousness remains to be settled, there are several theoretical re-conceptualisations of its implications (Smith Maguire 2016; Flemmen, Jarness, and Rosenlund 2018). In recent years the focus has also been on the role of algorithms and AI in emergent patterns of cultural consumption (Striphas 2015, Dourisch 2016) as well as on the discourse of innovations (Zukin 2020).
