Humlab Talk Queer in AI: Making AI Queer-Inclusive and Prioritizing Grassroots D&I Activism 30 mars, 8.30-9.45 (CET), ZOOM (pre-sign up required) Trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important topic because trust in AI systems and their creators has been lost. Researchers, corporations, and governments have long and painful histories of excluding marginalized groups from technology development, deployment, and oversight. As a result, these technologies are less useful and even harmful to minoritized communities. We argue that any AI development, deployment, and monitoring framework that aspires to trust must incorporate both feminist, non-exploitative participatory design principles and strong, outside, and continual monitoring and testing. We additionally explain the importance of considering aspects of trustworthiness beyond just transparency, fairness, and accountability, specifically, to consider justice and shifting power to the disempowered as core values to any trustworthy AI system. Creating trustworthy AI starts by funding, supporting, and empowering grassroots organizations like Queer in AI so the field of AI has the diversity and inclusion to credibly and effectively develop trustworthy AI. We explain what Queer in AI is, the mission of the organization, and the initiatives that Queer in AI runs (from community education and empowerment to policymaking and advocacy). We then leverage the expert knowledge Queer in AI has developed through its years of work and advocacy to discuss if and how gender, sexuality, and other aspects of queer identity should be used in datasets and AI systems and how harms along these lines should be mitigated. Based on this, we share a gendered approach to AI and further propose a queer epistemology and analyze the benefits it can bring to AI. We additionally discuss how to regulate AI with this queer epistemology in vision, proposing frameworks for making policies related to AI & gender diversity and privacy & queer data protection. You can read the interview here: https://campanthropology.org Best, Ilana Press blurb: Uber's April 2016 launch in Buenos Aires plunged the Argentine capital into a frenzied hysteria that engulfed courts of law, taxi drivers, bureaucrats, the press, the general public, and Argentina's president himself. Economist and anthropologist Juan M. del Nido, who had arrived in the city six months earlier to research the taxi industry, suddenly found himself documenting the unprecedented upheaval in real time. Taxis vs. Uber examines the ensuing conflict from the perspective of the city's globalist, culturally liberal middle class, showing how notions like monopoly, efficiency, innovation, competition, and freedom fueled claims that were often exaggerated, inconsistent, unverifiable, or plainly false, but that shaped the experience of the conflict such that taxi drivers' stakes in it were no longer merely disputed but progressively written off, pathologized, and explained away. This first book-length study of the lead-up to and immediate aftermath of the arrival of a major platform economy to a metropolitan capital considers how the clash between Uber and the traditional taxi industry played out in courtrooms, in the press, and on the street. Looking to court cases, the politics of taxi licenses, social media campaigns, telecommunications infrastructure, public protests, and Uber's own promotional materials, del Nido examines the emergence of "post-political reasoning": an increasingly common way in which societies neutralize disagreement, shaping how we understand what we can even legitimately argue about and how.

Call for Abstracts Communicating Memory Matters in Networked Environments Special Issue of Memory, Mind & Media Special Guest Editors: Christine Lohmeier (University of Salzburg, Austria) & Christian Pentzold (Leipzig University, Germany) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Memory is a communicative affair. Throughout history, a growing diversity of symbols and genres of communication have shaped how we come to remember and forget the past. Indeed, memory comes to matter when it is communicated: people connect to a collective past, return to personal reminiscences, and revive bygone moments but also impair, inhibit, or prevent memories by way of communication. It is the prime mode through which the past is enacted in the present. Unsurprisingly, the majority of studies into the practice of lived remembering operate with a notion of communicative memory, often in conjunction with the kindred concept of cultural memory. The special issue of Memory, Mind & Media will interrogate the current forms of communicative memory making. It starts from the idea that while communication is at the heart of commemoration processes, it has recently been sidelined by a focus on (media) technologies. These rapidly changing material environments attracted much scholarly attention around questions of living digital archives, virtual memory places, and media archaeology. Yet the actual communicative exchanges that happen on the cognitive level, in the often machine-mediated interactions between people, and the social realm at-large have received considerably less interest. The special issue invites contributions that address the ways in which data, services, and platforms enable communicative remembering across the scale from micro-level mental operations to macro-level societal processes. We assume that transforming media will leave their mark on how we engage with the past, interact with others, employ artifacts and documents, and thus construct memories. We also believe that memory making within and through these technologies means inclusion of some people and groups and exclusion of others. Reconsidering how communicative remembering has changed and how it is done today will also allow us to scrutinize some standard distinctions on which the field is built. Hence, dichotomies such as communicative memory versus cultural memory, personal versus family versus public memory, cognitive memory versus social memory seem in need of re-thinking and renewal when considered from the point of digitally networked communication. With its focus on the active side of remembrance, the special issue aims at a tenet of memory studies yet it promises to also reach out to connate disciplines which share this interest, like cognitive science and psychology, science and technology studies, communication, political science, anthropology, and sociology. Papers could address but are not limited to the following themes: * conceptualization of memory work in times of networked media environments * processes of inclusion and exclusion in acts of communicative remembering * the formation of new memory collectives * the impact of digital communication on remembering and forgetting in-between the individual and the collective level * continuities and changes in communicative remembering and forgetting within complex networked communication * the activities and positions of (new) memory agents in networked environments * collaborative memory and communication among families, couples, small and large groups Timeline and procedure 500 to 700 word abstracts should be sent to communicatingmemorymatters(a)plus.ac.at<mailto:communicatingmemorymatters@plus.ac.at> by October 3, 2022. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology. Submissions We invite Research and Technical papers, up to 15 pages, describing original unpublished research, making a substantial contribution to the research field. All submissions will be reviewed by the Program Committee. As was the case for IHAW 2021, the proceedings of IHAW 2022 will be published by Springer in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series (https://www.springer.com/series/7899) and will be presented in the technical sessions of the conference. As was also the case for IHAW 2021, the authors of the best papers accepted for IHAW2022 will be invited to submit extended versions for a special issue in a high quality journal (currently under negotiation). *** Fourth Call for Contributions *** ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good (GoodIT 2022) 7–9 September, 2022, 5* St. Raphael Resort & Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://cyprusconferences.org/goodit2022/ Scope The ACM GoodIT conference seeks papers describing significant research contributions related to the application of information technologies (IT) to social good. Social good is typically defined as something that provides a benefit to the general public. In this context, clean air and water, Internet connection, education, and healthcare are all good examples of social goods. However, new media innovations and the explosion of online communities have added new meaning to the term. Social good is now about global citizens uniting to unlock the potential of individuals, technology, and collaboration to create a positive societal impact. GoodIT solicits papers that address important research challenges related to, but not limited to: • Citizen science • Civic intelligence • Decentralized approaches to IT • Digital solutions for Cultural Heritage • Environmental monitoring • Ethical computing • Frugal solutions for IT • Game, entertainment, and multimedia applications • Health and social care • IT for automotive • IT for development • IT for education • IT for smart living • Privacy, trust and ethical issues in ICT solutions • Smart governance and e-administration • Social informatics • Socially responsible IT solutions • Sustainable cities and transportation • Sustainable IT • Technology addressing the digital divide Paper Submission The papers should not exceed six (6) pages (US letter size) double-column, including figures, tables, and references in standard ACM format (https://cyprusconferences.org/goodit2022/index.php/authors/ ). They must be original works and must not have been previously published. At least one of the authors of all accepted papers must register and present the work at the conference; otherwise, the paper will not be published in the proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings published in the ACM Digital Library. In addition to a Main Track, the conference features 9 additional Special Tracks. More information on these tracks is available on the conference web site. Journal Special Issues and Best Paper Award Selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version to two special journal issues: • FGCS, Elsevier • MDPI Sensors, where the theme of the special issue will be "Application of Information Technology (IT) to Social Good" (https://www.mdpi.com/journal/sensors/special_issues/topical_collection_good… ). Specifically 5 papers will be invited free of charge and another 5 papers will get a 20% discount on the publication fees. Furthermore, MDPI Sensors will sponsor a Best Paper Award with the amount of 400 CHF. Work-in-Progress and PhD Track Inside ACM GoodIT, the Work-in-Progress and PhD Track provides an opportunity to showcase interesting new work that is still at an early stage. We encourage practitioners and researchers to submit to the Work-in-Progress venue as it provides a unique opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting feedback on early-stage work, and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. Moreover, this track provides a platform for PhD students to present and receive feedback on their ongoing research. Students at different stages of their research will have the opportunity to present and discuss their research questions, goals, methods and results. This is an opportunity to obtain guidance on various aspects of their research from established researchers and other PhD students working in research areas related to technologies for social good.
