See the CfP below. *Call for Papers: Blackboxed Futures: Multiple Temporalities of Algorithmic Technologies (Online Symposium, March 19)* Algorithmic technologies are nowadays proliferating in various sectors of the economy and, more generally, in society. Yet, while their widespread development already occupies several areas of contemporary life, their material configuration often remains opaque and difficult to comprehend, especially when it comes to how algorithms shape the futures of people and societies at large. Often, algorithms and AI technologies are conceived by their users and creators as “magic” that is beyond comprehension — an understanding that has a range of political and cultural implications for society (Campolo & Crawford, 2020) and has been consequently recognized in the theorizations of economy and politics (Pignarre and Stengers, 2012). Questions of vital scholarly and political importance emerge – what future(s) do algorithmic technologies offer for society, who is included in them and left out, how they can be scrutinized and resisted? Do we witness a “temporal stasis in an age of automated media” (Andrejevic, Dencik & Trere, 2020) or a “speculative time-complex” (Avanessian & Malik, 2016)? In this symposium, we invite scholars from critical media, cultural, science and technology studies, as well as adjacent fields, to further reflect upon the imagined futures of algorithmic technologies and multiple temporalities enrolled in their continuous enactment. We suggest focusing on algorithmic temporalities by thinking of them both in terms of related discursive practices and issues of algorithmic design. Addressing both theoretical and empirical matters of algorithmic temporalities, this symposium aims to shed light on how our thinking about time vis-a-vis algorithmic technologies spreads — or meets resistance — in different social and political contexts. The symposium will take place online on *March 19*. We invite papers that reflect (but are by no means limited) upon the following themes: – discussions of multiple temporalities related to algorithmic technologies and the governance regimes of which they are a part of – grassroots and top-down imaginaries of futures as they pertain to the (mis)use of algorithms – historical accounts exploring interconnections between time and algorithmic technologies – political-economic accounts of temporal regimes associated with algorithmic technologies – decolonial computation and decolonization of algorithms – creative and speculative approaches seeking to address the issues of algorithmic futures Please, send your abstracts (250-500 words) and a short bio to the following email: blackboxedfutures(a)gmail.com no later than February 20. We would like to invite you to the conference on ‘Privacy-friendly and trustworthy technology for society’ that will take place in Zagreb, Croatia, 28 June 2022 in a hybrid format. Aims The conference aims to advance the knowledge on critical ethical concepts such as privacy, trust, and transparency of interactive technologies, contributing particularly by extending emerging concepts and themes such as privacy-by-design, overtrust, transparency-by-design, and personalized transparency. Call for papers We are interested in contributions that focus on how privacy and trust are challenged and conceptualized through the increased reliance on automated systems and its implications on design approaches. We encourage you to submit papers that combine different perspectives on privacy (enhancement), trust, and automation, which can be applied to different sectors, such as healthcare, education, leisure, or work. A particular focus can be made on emerging automated systems applied to vulnerable groups such as seniors and children, with ambient assisted living technologies (e.g.., audio-based and video-based applications to monitor elderly or frail people). The position is placed at the Department of ALM (Archival, Library & Information, and Museum & Cultural Heritage Studies) within the project CApturing Paradata for documenTing data creation and Use for the REsearch of the future (CAPTURE) financed by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (ERC-COG). The postdoctoral fellow is responsible for a sub-project that investigates, reviews, and develops methods and protocols for documentation of research processes and capturing and documenting archaeological paradata (i.e. data on how archaeological research data is created, used and processed). Principal duties The postdoctoral fellow is mainly supposed to be engaged in research. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to compile and present research results for colleagues, publish in relevant scholarly journals and to present research results in international conferences. The employed postdoctoral research fellow is expected to plan, initiate, conduct and develop independently goal-oriented empirical research in an interdisciplinary research environment. Certain administrative duties associated with the project and supervision of students are also possible. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to actively participate in the work of the project, contribute to the development of the collaborative research environment within the project and also at the Department of ALM as a whole. Requirements To be eligible for employment one must have completed a PhD in information studies, library and information science, information systems science, computer science, science studies, archival science, digital humanities, history of science or another, for example, humanities, social science or technical discipline relevant to the work duties. The candidate is expected to demonstrate very good skills in both written and oral English. The PhD degree should not be more than three years old by the application deadline, unless special circumstances exist. Special circumstances includes absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions or similar circumstances. This must be clearly stated in the application. A successful applicant may not have held a postdoctoral position at Uppsala University in the same or nearby field for more than a year. Additional qualifications Special weight will be attached to the applicant’s research expertise, but pedagogical expertise and administrative skills will also be taken into consideration. In the evaluation of research expertise, the most important factor is quality. Further qualifications useful for the position Relevant documented practical or scholarly experience relating to data or research data, information modelling, documentation practices, science studies, metadata and knowledge organisation, archiving and preservation or management of research data is an advantage. Also experience relating to information practices or behaviour is considered as an advantage as well as experience of the use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Knowledge of at least one Scandinavian language is an advantage but is not required of a successful applicant. Dear AoIR-istas, Happy New Year! We are happy to announce that submissions for #AoIR2022 <https://aoir.org/aoir2022/> are now open! The conference will take place 2-5 November 2022 in Dublin, Ireland. At this stage, the 2022 AoIR conference is being planned as a Limited Hybrid Conference. The main conference will take place as a face-to-face event in Dublin. We are committed to enabling participation by as many AoIR members as possible at some level in this year’s conference. To this end, two of our core events will run in both face-to-face and online versions: the Doctoral Colloquium <https://aoir.org/aoir2022/subtypes/#doccoll> and the Early Career Researcher (ECR) event. Submissions <https://aoir.org/aoir2022/subtypes/> for both modes of the Doctoral Colloquium are open; as with our other preconferences, calls for participation in both modes of the ECR event will be distributed shortly after conference acceptance notifications. We also plan to provide online access for all AoIR members to our larger events (keynote, plenaries, and Annual General Meeting). Of course, we are mindful as we begin the third year of the pandemic that we cannot easily predict what the world will look like in November. We are hopeful that the latest COVID-19 variant will have largely been brought under control and that travel will be possible and desirable for some. We do not pretend that even in the best circumstances travel will be available to everyone, but our options are, in large part, dictated by event contracts signed prior to the pandemic (and which have already, generously, been rolled forward two years after our initial Dublin plans in 2020). We will be monitoring the global COVID-19 situation as the year progresses and if a face-to-face conference proves impossible, we will endeavour to provide an alternative option. The issue here is that the recent US Infrastructure Law contained a provision, like the existing one for cash, that all crypto transactions over $10k have to be reported to the government. While this could be seen as something of a win for the crypto folks, i.e. crypto getting respect, the blanket inclusion of all "digital assets" is seen as overly broad, since it will include less fungible items such as NFTs and more obscure cryptocurrencies, as well as the more cash-like 'stablecoins' aka LTDA, or legal tender digital assets. It is suggested that much higher reporting thresholds be made for some classes of asset. Apologies for cross-posting! ------------------------------------------------- Dear all, We are happy to announce that the 5th International Workshop on Geospatial Linked Data will be co-located with the European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC) in May 2022. Details are published on the website: https://i3mainz.github.io/GeoLD2022/ Abstract: ------------- Geospatial data are essential not only for many traditional GIS tasks such as navigation, logistics, and tourism, but even more for emerging technologies like autonomous vehicle navigation, smart city technologies, and further location-based services. For all these technologies, geospatial linked data (GLD) is a crucially important source of machine-readable pre-interpreted information. Recently, we can observe a transformation process of spatial data infrastructures from previously merely acting as data providers to becoming brokers of geospatial information of different kinds, origins, quality, and a need to interconnect and incorporate information of different data repositories, often even in real-time. This need for GLD integration leads to efforts to create next-generation knowledge graphs which integrate multiple spatial datasets with large numbers of general datasets containing some geospatial references (e.g., \emph{DBpedia, Wikidata}) and even volunteered geographic information (e.g., \emph{LinkedGeoData}) and sensor data. This integration, either on the public Web or within organizations has immense socio-economic and academic benefits. The upsurge in linked data-related presentations in the Eurogeographics data quality workshop series, in relevant journal publications, in activities of standardization bodies (OGC GeoSPARQL), and in Spatial Data Applications shows a deep interest in GLD in national mapping agencies and beyond. GLD enables web-based, interoperable geospatial data infrastructures that may enhance and support existing standardization efforts like Europe's INSPIRE directive. Moreover, geospatial information systems benefit from Linked Data principles in building the next generation of spatial data applications, e.g., federated smart buildings, self-piloted vehicles, delivery drones, or automated local authority services, which is of increasing interest to various stakeholders. This workshop invites papers covering the challenges and solutions for handling GLD, especially for building high-quality, adaptable, geospatial data infrastructures and next-generation spatial applications. We aim to demonstrate the latest approaches and implementations and to discuss the solutions to challenges and issues arising from research and industrial organizations.
