IAMCR 2022 pre-conference (hybrid) - Big Data in Communication Research: A contextual turn? Organized by University of Copenahgen and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), in collaboration with the Computational Methods Division, the International Communication Association. Description: Recent advances in communication studies have seen much greater attention paid to the development, appropriation, and reflection on computational methods for analyzing large and heterogeneous data. Despite its considerable contributions, big data analytics has been criticized for the lack of contextual consideration for a long time. In other words, scholarships with computational methods may suffer from the pitfall of not unpacking, recognizing, and theorizing the richness of associated contextual elements in (big) data. This preconference aims to address such issues by advancing a context-aware approach in computational methods and by articulating an interrogation of contextual elements in using computational methods. A context-aware approach in computational methods is particularly valuable to IAMCR as a worldwide professional organization in the field of media and communication research, as this approach recognizes a reality where people communicate in diverse ways against different contexts. We thereby invite original and rigorous contributions and reflections based on big data and contextual analysis. We hope to engage with opportunities and challenges of advancing context-aware approaches in computational methods. The submissions can be theoretical or based on empirical studies, but would also include innovative suggestions to overcome research challenges like the lack of contextual consideration. People are working from home, from remote locations, and mixing time in and out of centralized workplaces more than ever before. Front line and other workers whose fields demand their corporeal presence are under new pressures, some of which implicate the tools of their trades. Work processes, organizational forms, and standards for what constitutes "good" work are evolving rapidly, as are threats to autonomy and privacy. The technologies at the center of these changes make work across time and space possible, while shaping the individual, relational, organizational, and societal outcomes of new work in ways both anticipated and unforeseen. In some cases, changes in co-location and communication patterns amplify existing trends, as with moves towards the gig economy, "just in time" products and services, and increasing social inequities. In others, entirely new practices have been introduced and refined, spurring new visions of work futures, as seen in creator culture, e-sports, and drop-shipping. In between, social fabrics are being rewoven as individuals and communities alike try to determine what kinds of work can be done successfully online and which require co-presence, and how they might change their practices accordingly. This special issue will focus specifically on the role of technology-mediated communication in shaping the future of work, seeking to illuminate these work shifts and their consequences. We seek submissions that are rooted in empirical insights and center the role of communication technologies; we are particularly interested in papers that think big and speak to how different populations are differentially impacted by and responding to these shifts, including those outside North American and European contexts. Possible topics include but are not limited to: * The role of Artificial Intelligence in new work arrangements and interactions * Virtual workspaces, online collaborative environments, and other forms of computer-supported cooperative work * New forms of human-machine interactions, such as customer service and health chatbots * Technologies of hiring, retaining, evaluating, and firing * Relational and informal dimensions of work relationships * Worker well-being and organizational thriving * Surveillance and privacy * Measurement, data, analytics, and autonomy * Blurring of domestic and work spheres * New forms of organizations and collaborative networks * Reshaping of collaboration participants and practices The special issue will be published in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication (JCMC) starting in summer, 2023. [Survey] Use of the TEI in Spanish

Dear list members, As part of the Mellon-funded initiative “Communicating the TEI to a multilingual community,” we are researching the contexts and uses of the Text Encoding Initiative among the global Spanish-speaking community. If you have used the TEI for your research or taken any TEI course at any level, and you are either part of the Global Spanish-speaking community or work with Spanish texts encoded in TEI, you are kindly invited to answer these questions. We are interested in surveying the different scenarios where TEI is used, the geographical diversity, and needs for training and learning resources. We are launching this survey in the hopes of covering all those Spanish-speaking areas, but also all those projects and users from other regions working with Spanish primary sources (e.g. projects in the US, using primary sources in Spanish, etc.). The survey consists of 22 questions and should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous, although we ask about your affiliation and nationality in order to obtain a better understanding from a geographical point of view (we do not ask for demographic information such as age, gender, ethnicity or religion). The obfuscation of women’s participation in cultural, creative, and technical fields, including in assembly and other forms of work typically overlooked in the literature (Nakamura 2011, 2014, Mayer, 2011) cannot be disentangled from the historical association of femininity with consumption and the private, domestic sphere (Kearney, 1998), and the devaluation of women’s production activities (White, 2015). Feminist scholarship of media production activities, both within professional industrial contexts and in spaces beyond this such as new digital economies (Duffy, 2015), have highlighted the role of women in media work as well as the social, technical, economic, and political structures that contribute to the ongoing devaluation of women’s work. This special issue seeks to extend this conversation and open up new horizons for research on feminist media production. At a time where the few high profile women in media making are held up as examples of change when the #MeToo movement and its ripple effects have highlighted ongoing pervasive issues, the moment is ripe for critical, intersectional, and transnational discussions of feminism and media-making. This is all the more pressing given the global fight against workplace-based sexism has waned in light of the exigencies of the Covid-19 pandemic. Paradoxically, within this context and an ever-expanding digital cultural economy, gendered inequality and employment precarity have become even more acute. At a virtual conference hosted by Women in Television and Film Canada in 2021, speakers noted the disproportionate impact of crises like COVID-19 on women and people of color in the media. Evidence shows that women are struggling with not only a shortage of employment opportunities but also challenges related to care responsibilities, mental health, and/or domestic violence (Boserup, McKenney, & Elkbuli, 2020, Bradbury-Jones & Isham, 2020, Power, 2020, Seedat & Rondon, 2021). In tandem with this, scholars have noted how the proliferation of digital platforms offer content creators, including women, new avenues and tools to disseminate their works and connect with new audiences (Lauzen, 2021). This special issue seeks to explore women’s production cultures and practices, the subject-positions they entail, and the labour relations and policies they are entangled with. We seek submissions from scholars in diverse fields to advance interdisciplinary dialogues on feminist media production. We are interested in empirical, theoretical, and historical contributions that address long-standing and emerging questions regarding the relationship between media production, gender, race, labor, embodiment, nationalism, surveillance capitalism, platform politics, neoliberalism, and reactionary politics. Submissions that deploy intersectional feminist, decolonial, and anti-colonial approaches are especially welcome. We are also very interested in papers that explore approaches and methods for examining feminist media production in emerging and digital media. We encourage those considering submission to take a broad view of media production and a local perspective on these practices, as we are interested in case studies from different parts of the world.
