The closing date for applications is midday, 14 March, 2022. About Fairwork Fairwork is an action-research project that currently operates in 26 countries. We research working conditions in the platform economy, in order to develop ‘fairness ratings’ for digital labour platforms like Uber, Helpling and Deliveroo (see examples here <https://fair.work/en/fw/ratings/>). We use these ratings as a lever to improve pay and conditions for platform workers, through media and consumer pressure. The project currently operates in twenty six countries on five continents, and studies both geographically-tethered gig economy platforms and cloudwork (or ‘remote work’) platforms. Fairwork’s action research approach intends not just to understand the world, but to change it. By bringing workers, platforms, scholars, labour researchers and policymakers to the table, we work to collaboratively develop and embed principles of fair work into the script of the gig economy. Fundamental to the project is a commitment to being participatory and non-hierarchical within our communities: we are all—workers, unions, platforms, regulators, academics—the experts, and we all have co-developed this project. Our ultimate aim is to understand, and counter, some of the forces that disempower gig workers across the world. About the Postdoctoral Researcher Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the post holder will act as a Postdoctoral Researcher of the Fairwork project. Fairwork is an action research project that assesses digital labour platforms against principles of fair work, and uses that research to push for positive change in the gig economy. The project currently operates in twenty six countries on five continents, and studies both geographically-tethered gig economy platforms and cloudwork (or ‘remote work’) platforms. The Researcher position will involve being the ‘country lead’ for Fairwork teams around the world. The specific teams that the post holder will work with will be chosen based on the post holder’s experience and the needs of local teams. Tasks will involve developing fair work standards, qualitative research with workers and platforms, organising meetings, outreach, liaising with external partners and stakeholders, publishing research in well-regarded academic journals, disseminating findings in the media, assisting with the supervision of project researchers external to the OII, and assistance keeping the project to some of our key deadlines. Selection criteria: Essential - Hold a relevant postgraduate degree in sociology, geography, anthropology, economics, development studies, social policy, law, or related fields. - Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field. - Academic or professional experience, and an established career, related to the gig economy, platform work, remote work, the digital economy, decent work, or precarious/temporary work. - Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research projects and methodologies. - Ability to manage own academic research and associated activities. - Previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations. - Experience with survey design and analysis. - Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings. - Ability to organise complex sets of information, and develop granular work schedules. - Experience coordinating a diverse set of stakeholders. - Ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget Ability to raise research funds through making grant applications. - Experience studying platform work in any of our countries of interest, and its relationships to inequality, race, gender, culture, and society. - An interest in understanding obstacles faced by platform workers. Responsibilities: - Develop research questions about the job quality in the gig economy, conduct research, analyse detailed and complex qualitative data from a variety of sources, and generate original ideas by building on existing concepts. - Doing primary and secondary research, and drawing on existing data collected by the Faiwork team in order to evaluate platform companies against principles of fairwork. - Having operational responsibility for multiple sub-areas of work within the bigger Fairwork project, and giving input to all key decision-making project-wide. - Regularly liaising with project stakeholders, and supervision of some of the project research team who are external to the OII. Agree clear task objectives, organise, and delegate workto other members of the team. - Disseminating the ‘fair work’ rating criteria in collaboration with the PI and project team. - Collaborate in the preparation of research publications, chapters, summaries, and reports. - Extensive travel to conduct research, both alone and with partners, to investigate and analyse wider issues shaping platform work in field sites. - Small scale project management and the co-ordination of multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. - Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone. - Prepare regular update reports to the funder and other collaborators. - Disseminate findings in the media. - Leading efforts to maintain a constant public profile (blogs, social media, short reports, etc.) - Managing the project’s stakeholder relationships. - Maintaining an awareness of key project deadlines and helping to steer the team towards them. - Leading in the organisation of workshops and an international conference about fair work. - Raise research funds through grant applications and manage delegated budgets. - Share responsibility for shaping the research group’s plans and the writing of group-funding applications for new research projects - Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups - Other duties as may be required by the PI. Online ECREA Pre-conference: The Impact of Streaming on Media Industries and Cultural Production Monday 17th October 2022 Organised by the ECREA Media Industries and Cultural Production Section Call for Papers: Streaming media content, live or recorded, has experienced exponential growth during the COVID19 pandemic. Streaming, understood as the digital transmission and reception of files over the Internet, refers to text, audio and video content. It has impacted upon both content distribution and consumption in a variety of sectors such as film, television, games, publishing, music, and radio/podcasts. The multiple forms and commercial models through which streaming services are organized -- from transnational streaming services, to such that target specific geographical markets or audiences, and from commercial to indie and public service streaming -- transform cultural production in manifold ways. With streaming, consumption has become more on demand and personalised. This conference on the impact of streaming on the media industries and cultural production is particularly interested in bringing together scholars examining the impact of streaming on different media industry sectors and/or in different countries and production contexts. It especially welcomes contributions that explore the impact of streaming along different parts of the media supply-chain, from the front-end distribution and delivery of content, through content delivery networks and physical infrastructure operations. Rather than the usual format, this online conference will consist of workshops made up of 5-10-minute provocations/statements designed to generate debate and discussion. We also welcome pre-constituted workshops of four or five 5-10-minute provocations/statements, as well as workshops that include industry participants. Two slots per session will be ringfenced for early career researchers, pending sufficient applications. Please indicate if you are an early career researcher in the Abstract. For 5-10-minute provocations/statements, please submit an abstract of maximum 150 words, and a biography of maximum 100 words. Individually submitted provocations will be formed by the selection committee into workshops consisting of 4-5 provocations. For pre-constituted workshops of four or five 5-10-minute provocations/statements, please submit a maximum 800 word abstract summarising the overall theme for the workshop and the contribution of each participant, and a maximum 100 word biography for each participant. Overview In an era that has been termed one of post-globalization (Flew, 2018), there is considerable debate around governance of the global Internet. In particular, multistakeholder approaches which seek to bypass nation-state governments in the name of global "netizens" have been critiqued as lacking real regulatory capacity to transform the behaviour of digital platforms towards public interest goals. This one-day symposium will explore questions of sovereignty in the digital environment from international and comparative perspectives. **CFP* "IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING", SPECIAL ISSUE, CONVERGENCE: THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RESEARCH INTO NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES* We invite submissions for a special issue of *Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies* <https://journals.sagepub.com/home/con> on the topic of *Immersive Storytelling*. Storytelling is central to the immersive entertainment industry in all its astonishing variety: Alternative Reality Games (ARGs); escape rooms; experiential art; immersive audio; Live Action Role Play (LARP); live experiences incorporating Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR); scare and other themed attractions; immersive interactive theatre; transmedia and virtual experiences. The industry underpins an international marketplace that encompasses everything from Dreamscape Immersive’s location-based VR attractions, to Museum of Ice Cream’s multi-sensory installations, to Punch Drunk’s immersive theatre shows; examples spread across the USA, Singapore, Dubai and China. The global pandemic has accelerated the pace of R&D as the power of creative minds has focused on connecting with dispersed audiences in their own homes and locales using technologies like streaming and mobile device applications. With this come the challenges of retaining qualities of liveness and collective experience when people can’t physically travel or congregate in large numbers. At this time of experimentation, adaptation and recovery we can reflect on the current reality of the ‘experience economy’ conceived by Pine and Gilmore in 1998, given that immersion is a contested term and the diverse forms listed above all have complex histories. The goal is to bring together perspectives from the global research community across multiple disciplines which have a stake in developing, studying and critically interrogating immersive storytelling. The Editors welcome contributions on any topic related to immersive storytelling, such as: - *Definitional debates and histories.* This could include taxonomies, historical background, disciplinary perspectives and comparative analyses of existing works. - *Collaboration and partnership models. *This could include examples of production practice, digitally enabled forms (including algorithmic/automated generation) and authoring processes (including co-creation). - *Platforms, tools, techniques. *This could include content creation tools, underpinning technologies/techniques, prototype systems, conceptual designs and strategies to scaffold user interaction. - *Aesthetics and new modes of experience. *This could include emergent/hybrid creative methodologies, economic value, business model innovation, the contexts of consumption, industries of research and criticism, investment priorities (e.g. the UK’s £72 million Creative Industries Sector Deal); and the impact of these on cultural policy, professional skills and creative sector employment, especially in light of threats to arts funding - *Critical approaches to immersive storytelling. *This could include modes of participation (agency, liveness, presence and collective experience) and strategies of support (funding and pricing models). - *Researching immersion and immersive experiences. *This could include research histories, approaches to user testing and audience research, and intersectional methodologies for analysing creative practice. - *Sites, contexts and cultures of immersive storytelling production. *This could include issues of representation, social justice, public attitudes, the digital divide, global variations in technology access and usage, and the ethics of using personal data (including unintended consequences). Keynote speaker: Professor Anne Kaun, Södertörn University Data logging and processing have been fundamental for the development and maintenance of welfare states since the 20th century. Exemplified by key functions such as the assignment of social security numbers, the reporting of tax statements, or the registration of criminal records, state authorities have always been dependent on collecting and organising significant amounts of citizen data. With the digitization of welfare sectors and institutions and the rise of computerised big data, these processes have accelerated, leading to new and comprehensive modes of datafication (Cukier & Mayer-Schoenberger 2013; Kitchin 2014; Mejias & Couldry 2019). Following this "paradigm shift" in the provision of public services and social welfare (Dencik & Kaun 2020), the pre-conference discusses the growing reliance on data-driven and algorithmic systems across sectors and institutions (Yeung 2018; Eubanks 2018). We are particularly interested in the extensive use of commercially supplied services and in the growing reliance on big tech companies who provide the underlying infrastructure for a wide range of societal functions. Amazon and Microsoft are, for instance, dominant actors in the provision of cloud solutions to public databases and services, while entire app ecologies rely on Google's third-party services and developer tools. Focusing on the consequences of this inherent and hidden commercialization, the pre-conference welcomes contributions that enquire into the potential conflicts of interests and clashes between market logics and welfare ideologies. The pre-conference, in other words, seeks to understand the nature of emergent data welfare states (Andreasen et al. 2021) and to critically assess how and why mechanisms of datafication and commodification are being built into the architecture of contemporary welfare states and democracies. It enquires into technical, ethical, and political choices that are made when digital technologies are implemented; the degrees and possibilities of citizen surveillance and data governance; the market structures and political economies around datafied welfare services and sectors; and the material infrastructures that undergird the datafication of the welfare state. The pre-conference welcomes contributions on, but not limited to: - Datafication processes and challenges in key welfare sectors (e.g., healthcare, education, social services, policing, media, etc.) - Conflicts and clashes between welfare ideologies and commercial logics of big tech - Historical analyses of public datafication processes - Theoretical discussions on datafication and democracy - Case studies of e.g., Covid-19 strategies - Digital public infrastructure projects and public-private partnerships The ECREA pre-conference is arranged by the Communication & Democracy section, the ERC-funded Datafied Living project and the Data Publics project, funded by the Velux Foundation. Instead of inquiring as to how we could ‘fix’ Facebook, this seminar explores alternatives that could replace them. It presents the idea of platform socialism - the organisation of the digital economy through the social ownership of digital assets and democratic control over the infrastructure and systems that govern our digital lives. This framework facilitates holistic thinking about the systemic nature of the problems we face and the need for genuine alternatives. To develop the principles and institutional sketch of platform socialism, James Muldoon draws inspiration from the writings of two early twentieth century writers: the libertarian socialist, G. D. H. Cole and the Austrian philosopher and economist Otto Neurath. James proposes new forms of participatory and decentralised governance through an ecosystem of alternative ownership models of digital platforms. How would socially-owned and controlled apps operate in transport, food delivery and short-term accommodation? Drawing from historical examples and contemporary prototypes, platform socialism seeks to reclaim a long-term counter-hegemonic project for challenging capitalist control over technology. Biography Dr James Muldoon is a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Exeter and researcher at the Autonomy think tank. He is the author of Platform Socialism: Reclaiming our Digital Future from Big Tech (Pluto Press, 2022) and Building Power to Change the World: The Political Thought of the German Council Movements (OUP, 2020). Technology Ethics in Action: Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Dear all— I’m thrilled to share a new open-access special issue in the Journal of Social Computing, “Technology Ethics in Action: Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives”! This special issue interrogates the discourses and impacts of “tech ethics.” As many institutions embrace tech ethics in response to concerns about digital technology, it is necessary to consider the impacts, limits, and opportunities of these initiatives. The articles in this issue analyze tech ethics as a practical and political endeavor, rather than a primarily philosophical one. What's happened as "tech ethics" has become a widespread discourse? What are the limits of tech ethics initiatives? How can we develop better paths forward? The twelve academic essays encompass a diverse background of authors and a wide exploration on the topic of tech ethics. The topics range from ethics-washing to ethics-bashing, inherent racial bias in algorithms, data scientists as political actors, and the vast unseen and unacknowledged labor that is required to keep algorithms running. The articles are published in two editions: The first section presents the limitations of trying to fix technology through ethics <https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocresult.jsp?isnumber=9684739&punumber=896…> The second section presents methodologies and solutions for how technology could better serve society <https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocresult.jsp?isnumber=9698149&punumber=896…> My contribution,“Real Estate Politik: Democracy and the Financialization of Social Networks” <https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9698151>, looks at the structural problems with social media from the perspective of land use and land activism. I draw an analogy between the financialization of attention by platforms with the financialization of land by commercial real estate development, and explore community land trusts and Indigenous land stewardship as models for public interest technology. This work emerged from the Ethical Tech Working Group at the Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society.
