Dear Friends, I hope the holiday season finds you all well and looking forward to some peace and shared time with those you care about. It's nearly the end of the year and it's been a struggle to keep going after losing my mother very recently. Despite this, I have a few exciting items of news I hope you won’t mind me sharing. The first is my involvement in the documentary SHADOW WORLD <https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/schattenwelten-der-kampf-um-d…>by Dirk Laabs, of the major German broadcaster ZDF, who interviewed me extensively. Examining the dark world of influence, the film is out first in German <https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/schattenwelten-der-kampf-um-d…> but will be released soon with worldwide distribution in English so watch out for that. I was also interviewed extensively for an important investigation in the Financial Times <https://www.ft.com/content/1f409239-9e4a-4988-b6fa-cad4dbe7c344>, questions I've repeatedly raised about how co-opted some research centers have become by Big Tech's influence. The article also raises issues of Facebook closing down access to data for research. A key issue often missed is access to information about *decision-making *and I emphasized that the danger here is huge… our security and democratic integrity, our mental and physical health cannot pivot on the ability for people to make huge ethical sacrifices, like Frances Haugen. It’s not just about *data for academics *- 'vetted' academics - I've been arguing the public need #FOIA <https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=foia&highlightedUpdateUrns=…> style access to the firm’s decision-making & internal research documents. The UK Parliament Joint Committee also has published "No longer the land of the lawless" a landmark report <https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/534/draft-online-safety-bill-joi…> laying out plans to make law there to tame the #BigTech giants. This is a result of the consultation on the draft Online Safety Bill, which rests on evidence including my statement <https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/39329/html/> which was published this week and listed as contributing to the report. Post doc position on Dynamics of Misinformation at Syracuse University iSchool

The School of Information at Syracuse University seeks a highly motivated and creative Postdoctoral Scholar to assist with NSF-funded research project titled The Dynamics of Misinformation<https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1908407&HistoricalAwards=f…>. Applicants must have demonstrable expertise in running large human-subject experiments using crowd-based platforms (e.g., Amazon’s Mechanical Turk) as well as a strong background in quantitative analytical methods and computational modeling. Candidates with an interest in complex systems theories and methods are especially welcome. Experience with probabilistic modeling (e.g., MCMC inference methods & probabilistic graphical models) is also desirable. The position is anticipated to be funded for two years, with a preferred start date in January of 2022. The starting salary is $60k per annum plus a comprehensive benefits package. Appointments will be made for one year, and reappointment for the second year is expected subject to good performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is an industry first. - Looking toward the future, we’re also launching new educational opportunities for researchers and hosting our first BountyConEDU <https://bountyconedu2022.splashthat.com/> — a three-day conference for university students across Europe interested in learning more about the industry. - Since launching our bug bounty program in 2011, we’ve received more than 150K reports, of which over 7,800 were awarded a bounty. Over the past 10 years, our bug bounty program has grown from only working with Facebook’s website to covering all of our web and mobile clients across all of our apps, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Quest, Workplace, and more. As we build for the future, we’re expanding the program to help combat the industry-wide issue of scraping and providing more opportunities for researchers. Here are a few highlights from the past decade: - Since 2011, we’ve paid out more than $14 million in bug bounties and received more than 150K reports, of which over 7,800 were awarded a bounty. - We’ve paid out more than $250,000 in Hacker Plus <https://www.facebook.com/whitehat/hackerplus/> bonuses since that program’s launch in 2020. - So far this year, we’ve awarded over $2.3 million to researchers from more than 46 countries. - This year alone, we’ve received around 25,000 reports in total and issued bounties on over 800 reports. - Since 2011, we’ve received the most valid reports from India, the United States, and Nepal. >From the beginning, we knew that our program needed to remain agile so that we could pivot in response to emerging risk areas. For example, to help crack down on instances of platform abuse after Cambridge Analytica, we launched the industry’s first Data Abuse Bounty program <https://about.fb.com/news/2018/04/data-abuse-bounty/>, which rewards researchers who report misuse of Facebook data by app developers. After a 2018 attack <https://about.fb.com/news/2018/09/security-update/> that targeted access tokens, we launched the industry’s first bug bounty for third-party apps and websites <https://www.facebook.com/notes/facebook-bug-bounty/introducing-rewards-for-…> to reward researchers who find vulnerabilities that involve abuse of Facebook user data. As we look toward the future of our program, we’re focused on expanding it to address new risk areas and launching new initiatives to recruit and retain researchers. New expansions to cover scraping As scraping continues to be an internet-wide challenge, we’re excited to open up two new areas of research for our bug bounty community. While we are only one piece of the larger puzzle when it comes to combating scraping efforts, we believe that the bug bounty community is an important element of our own work. Starting as a private bounty track for our Gold+ HackerPlus <https://www.facebook.com/whitehat/hackerplus/> researchers, our bug bounty program will now reward reports about scraping bugs. The goal of this program is to find bugs that attackers utilize to bypass scraping limitations to access data at greater scale than the product intended. Our goal is to quickly identify and counter scenarios that might make scraping less costly to execute. To our knowledge, this is the industry’s first bug bounty program for scraping. In addition, we are expanding our data bounty program to reward reports of unprotected or openly public data sets containing at least 100,000 unique Facebook user records that include information such as email, phone number, physical address, religious, or political affiliation. The reported data set must be unique and not previously known or reported to Meta. If the report is valid, we will make efforts with the relevant entity to remove the data set or consider legal means to address the issue. We will reward valid reports of scraped data sets in the form of charity donations to nonprofits of our researchers’ choosing, to ensure that we are not incentivizing scraping activity. We know that bug bounty researchers are in high demand, and want to make sure that our program remains rewarding. However, we also know that bug hunting can be a transient career path, with researchers sometimes transitioning in and out of programs. For this reason, we also want to help cultivate a more sustained interest among new and existing researchers. Educational opportunities Some of our longtime researchers have told us that they are interested in more educational opportunities to expand the surfaces and products they can hunt on — especially as certain bug areas are notoriously difficult to transition between, for example from software to hardware bug hunting. We’ve designed our annual conference, BountyCon, to include sessions run by our top researchers. In these sessions, they discuss practical techniques and approaches for discovering and reporting critical vulnerabilities across surfaces for other researchers to learn from. Next year, and pending travel restrictions, the conference will take place in May in Singapore and will be co-hosted with Google. We noticed at BountyCon that when researchers worked together to submit bugs, they not only found higher-impact bugs but also learned from one another about their different focus areas. To support this kind of teamwork and learning, this year we released a collaboration feature <https://www.facebook.com/BugBounty/posts/4912374705443383> for researchers who want to submit joint reports to our program. Later this year, we will also launch a dedicated education center to help quickly onboard bug bounty researchers onto different products and technologies so that they can cut down the time it takes to hunt new areas for bugs. Supporting the next generation of bug hunters In addition to engaging the researchers that currently participate in our program, it’s also important that we help usher in future generations of bug hunters. In February, we’ll host our first BountyConEDU <https://bountyconedu2022.splashthat.com/>, a conference in Madrid for university students from all over Europe. This three-day conference will allow them to learn more about bug bounties and how to hunt for bugs, as well as to form teams to test Meta products for valid vulnerabilities. In this talk, Dr. Megan Squire will explain how she uses data science to understand complex socio-technical phenomena such as extremist group membership and the spread of dangerous propaganda. Dr. Squire's work understanding online radicalization and measuring extremism on social media has been featured in numerous media publications including the BBC, NPR, The New York Times, and CNN. Dr. Megan Squire is a professor of Computer Science at Elon University (North Carolina, USA). Her main research area is applying data science techniques to understand niche and extremist online communities, particularly radical right-wing groups on social media. Dr. Squire is the author of two books on data cleaning and data mining, and over 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including several Best Paper awards. In 2017, she was named the Elon University Distinguished Scholar. She currently serves as a Senior Fellow for data analytics at the Southern Poverty Law Center, and as a Belfer Fellow for the ADL.

While this abstract goal has become somewhat of a globalist consensus, the legal, political, and institutional conditions needed to get there are far from clear: how can international human rights law initiate improvements in different areas, given its indeterminate, often even disputed nature? What are the risks of the reference to international human rights law, in terms of stabilizing preexisting disparities or power concentrations through illusive improvements? Where does the reference to human rights only provide a new, improved language for a non-improved status quo? Could private internet companies provide a protection of human rights online comparable to that of judicial institutions? Ultimately, whose human rights, and whose interpretations are determining the present and future of global internet governance? This event invites scholars and actors in the practice and policy world to re-examine and revisit the state and role of human rights in the digital world, as this is shaped by technological and political economic changes of ‘platformisation’, privatization of public spaces, erosion and abuse of certain rights, the pressure imposed on a decade of successive crises from financial, environmental to health, and the re-emergence of authoritarian politics and modes of governance. In recent years, the everyday life of humanity has been affected dramatically by the experience of a global pandemic, where public health political responses have been met with varying degrees of acceptance. The severity and nature of this impact differs greatly among regions and within societies, across genders and socioeconomic discrepancies, bringing back to the fore the persistence and deeply engrained footprint of social inequalities. Within this context of emergency, crisis and exacerbation of inequities, the digital world occupied a center stage in the social, cultural and professional spheres. The heightened physical and mental health crisis across the globe is intertwined with a long and arduous struggle in governing digital platforms for the benefit of humanity vis-a-vis the profit driven dominant model. The latter has impacted not only on the ways in which users on platforms are adjusted to the needs of the platform, systematically and technologically through the use of AI, rather than the opposite, but have also impacted on understandings and conceptualizations of fundamental freedoms and rights, as they are shaping social conceptualizations of what privacy means, the extent of free speech and hate speech, the extent of misinformation and the exercise of informational rights. After having addressed “Global Internet Governance as a Diplomacy Issue” at its first edition in 2017, “Overcoming Inequalities in Internet Governance” in 2018, “Europe as a Global Player in Internet Governance” in 2019, and “Online Information Governance” in 2020, The European Multidisciplinary Conference on Global Internet Governance Actors, Regulations, Transactions and Strategies turns its attention this year to the governance of human rights in the digital world, continuing the conversation on global internet governance from attention to institutions and structural factors to the role of content and misinformation as an object of governance, and internet actors as forces of change. CfP Convergence Special Issue: Social Media and Platform Work: Stories, Practices, and Workers’ Organisation Guest Editors: Júlia Vilasís-Pamos, Fernanda Pires, Willian Fernandes Araújo, and Rafael Grohmann This special issue aims to deepen the understanding of the ways platform workers engage with social media. During the last decade, social media have been instrumental within platform work because they are fundamental to this type of labour. Platform workers’ use of social media can be considered forms of communication, socialisation and organisation. Through WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and other channels, workers can share tips, stories, and practices. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new understandings of the different uses, discourses, practices and stories that emerge when platform work intersects with social media. Furthermore, platform workers can use social media to bring to the fore different forms of exploitation, discrimination, and inequalities around platform power, and also in relation to consumers of the platform services. Thus, it has clearly become necessary to interrogate the ways in which platform work is reinforcing pre-existing inequalities in the areas of gender, class, sexuality, and country of origin, among others, as well as to understand the role that social media play to mitigate or increase these inequalities. Beyond questioning inequalities associated with platform work expressed in social media, it is also important to explore the ways social media platforms can be key spaces for workers to collaborate, socialize, and learn informally about this type of labour. Workers share stories on social media about their work routine and everyday practices. Social media can also be a place for work self-promotion and the emergence of workers acting as influencers and coaches. Hence, it is important to raise questions about the centrality that social media has for workers’ organizations, strikes, fissures among the collective, or other forms of emerging solidarities. We invite researchers to send proposals focused on different theoretical and empirical frameworks on the use of social media among platform workers. We strongly encourage contributions from scholars of the Global South, and from different academic fields. Dear AOIRers, I am taking the liberty to forward this announcement, as I am currently a fellow there. To the extent of my knowledge, I can try to answer (via email) questions that are not in the FAQ, or at least redirect questions to the powers that be. The Käte Hamburger Kolleg Aachen Cultures of Research (c:o/re) has openings for a total of 10 international fellows for the academic year 2022/2023, starting in October 2022. Eligible applicants are expected to come from the humanities, social sciences and STS as well as from natural, life and technical sciences. This International Center for Advanced Studies at RWTH Aachen University is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Part of its mission is to offer a free space to its fellows to develop their own research and to exchange ideas up to 12 months. The topic Cultures of Research is positioned where the fields of philosophy, sociology and history interface with natural science and technology. The overall focus of the Center’s work is on transformations of science and technology towards complexity, life-likeness and emergence.
