Workshops should reflect the inter- and multidisciplinary nature of Web Science. Tutorials could cover a wide variety of Web Science approaches and methods, including but not limited to techniques for data collection, processing, analysis, as well as substantive interpretation, best practices, and ethics. Examples of potential WebSci workshop areas include but are not limited to: * Misinformation and propaganda on the Web * Online health and wellness (especially concerning the COVID-19 pandemic) * Online mental health * The interplay between AI and the Web * Using Web Science for social good * Collective intelligence, crowdsourcing * Bias on the Web * Data ethics and algorithmic accountability * Digital inequalities: access, quality, and participation * Information privacy and cybersecurity * Learning and education on the Web * Social connections and social influence on the Web * Social inclusion and exclusion on the Web * Internet politics and political participation * Internet, Globalization and Cultural Identities * The evolution of social media services * The future of the Web * Cybercrime and safety * Digital Humanitarianism * ICT for development * Climate Change and digital carbon footprints * Paid and unpaid work, the gig economy * Aging and generations (different practices and attitudes towards the Web) * Global south and globalization * Gender and sexualities (the Web as safe/unsafe space, space for mobilization) Workshops and tutorials can be either on-site or fully online. A "call for papers/contributions" is optional. Workshops/tutorials with alternative interactive modes such as e.g. round table discussions or design/co-creation sessions can also be proposed. You can propose a program committee (PC) with content experts for your event. When accepted, make sure your event is held in a timezone amenable to the participants. Each workshop or tutorial should have a web address containing all information about the venue, call for contributions, deadlines, modality, language etc. Workshops and tutorials can be held in any language. ------------------ PROPOSAL FORMAT ------------------ * Proposals can be up to 3 pages long and should include the following information (please submit your proposal in English): * Workshop/tutorial title. * Workshop/tutorial summary (1-2 paragraphs). * Workshop/tutorial description, including the motivation and goals of the proposal and its relevance to the field of Web Science. * Workshop/tutorial schedule and activities, including the format, proposed activities (panels, sessions, interactive exercises, etc.), the invited speakers or panelists, the modality (on-site or online). * Workshop/tutorial organizer information, including names, affiliations, emails, and personal websites. With apologies for X-posting Call for Submissions: Stories From the Field Dear Colleagues, We are looking for submissions for an edited volume addressed to academic and general publics entitled ‘Stories From the Field’ which aims at being a collection of short, autobiographical stories as experienced and written by fieldworkers. The selected stories should be non-fictional, experienced by fieldworkers while conducting research and/or other workings in their field(s). The definition of ‘field’ and ‘fieldworker’ is deliberately absent to encourage the submission of contributions from various disciplines. Stories can be of any nature provided they reflect experiences in the field. Best wishes, Lisa ----------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue GAMEVIRONMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------ Teaching with Games: Educational Gaming in Religion, Philosophy and Ethics edited by Tim Hutchings ------------------------------------------------------------ This special issue invites contributions that address the history and future of educational gaming, with particular attention to the fields of religious studies, theology, philosophy and ethics. While the representation and influence of religion in mainstream games has been studied extensively, we argue that much less attention has been paid to games developed specifically for the purpose of exploring religious, ethical and philosophical perspectives. This issue challenges that oversight, calling for fresh attention to the ways in which games and gaming have been adopted for didactic purposes within religious communities, ethical campaign groups, academic contexts and beyond. We invite discussion of any and all kinds of games, including videogames, boardgames and other game formats. Since the 1980s, more than 1500 videogames have been created by and for religious communities, as demonstrated by the extraordinary archive produced by Vivian Gonzalez (http://www.religiousgames.org/) Videogames and playful virtual environments have also been produced by academic teams for educational purposes, from elaborate religious environments constructed in Second Life to new virtual reality settings that locate the user within religious and ethical situations. One pioneering example is The Durga Puja Mystery, an educational game created by Xenia Zeiler and Flying Robot Studios in 2020. Other games take a more questioning approach to religion and ethics, forcing players to reckon with the consequences of religious hypocrisy and spiritual abuse, or challenging players to wrestle with moral conundrums that threaten to compromise their values and commitments. What unites these games, and gives a shared focus to this special issue, is their intention to guide the player through a process of change and formation. This special issue invites contributions in a wide range of formats. Peer-reviewed journal articles are welcomed, but we will also consider research reports, game reviews, interviews with game developers, reports from the classroom and reports on games currently under development. Potential authors are encouraged to contact the editor to discuss ideas for theme and format. ----------------------------------------------------------- Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects are welcome, including research informed by religious studies, philosophy and other humanities disciplines. Topics may include, but are not limited to: * studies of games from all religious, spiritual or ethical traditions * games inspired by sacred texts and stories * games that promote social justice or social change * philosophical analysis of the ethics of educational/formational games * studies of discourses around gaming in religious or educational contexts * evaluation of the impact of educational games in religious or ethical settings * new trends and developments in educational or formative gaming * educational uses of innovative gaming technologies, including virtual reality * case studies of innovative educational games * reports on the use of games in the classroom ------------------------------------------------------------ SUBMISSION DETAILS Journal articles should be 5-8000 words in length and will be subject to double-blind peer review. **CFP* "IMMERSIVE STORYTELLING", SPECIAL ISSUE, CONVERGENCE: THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF RESEARCH INTO NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES* We invite submissions for a special issue of *Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies* <https://journals.sagepub.com/home/con> on the topic of *Immersive Storytelling*. Storytelling is central to the immersive entertainment industry in all its astonishing variety: Alternative Reality Games (ARGs); escape rooms; experiential art; immersive audio; Live Action Role Play (LARP); live experiences incorporating Virtual Reality (VR) or Augmented Reality (AR); scare and other themed attractions; immersive interactive theatre; transmedia and virtual experiences. The industry underpins an international marketplace that encompasses everything from Dreamscape Immersive’s location-based VR attractions, to Museum of Ice Cream’s multi-sensory installations, to Punch Drunk’s immersive theatre shows; examples spread across the USA, Singapore, Dubai and China. The global pandemic has accelerated the pace of R&D as the power of creative minds has focused on connecting with dispersed audiences in their own homes and locales using technologies like streaming and mobile device applications. With this come the challenges of retaining qualities of liveness and collective experience when people can’t physically travel or congregate in large numbers. At this time of experimentation, adaptation and recovery we can reflect on the current reality of the ‘experience economy’ conceived by Pine and Gilmore in 1998, given that immersion is a contested term and the diverse forms listed above all have complex histories. The goal is to bring together perspectives from the global research community across multiple disciplines which have a stake in developing, studying and critically interrogating immersive storytelling. The Editors welcome contributions on any topic related to immersive storytelling, such as: · *Definitional debates and histories.* This could include taxonomies, historical background, disciplinary perspectives and comparative analyses of existing works. · *Collaboration and partnership models. *This could include examples of production practice, digitally enabled forms (including algorithmic/automated generation) and authoring processes (including co-creation). · *Platforms, tools, techniques. *This could include content creation tools, underpinning technologies/techniques, prototype systems, conceptual designs and strategies to scaffold user interaction. · *Aesthetics and new modes of experience. *This could include emergent/hybrid creative methodologies, economic value, business model innovation, the contexts of consumption, industries of research and criticism, investment priorities (e.g. the UK’s £72 million Creative Industries Sector Deal); and the impact of these on cultural policy, professional skills and creative sector employment, especially in light of threats to arts funding · *Critical approaches to immersive storytelling. *This could include modes of participation (agency, liveness, presence and collective experience) and strategies of support (funding and pricing models). · *Researching immersion and immersive experiences. *This could include research histories, approaches to user testing and audience research, and intersectional methodologies for analysing creative practice. · *Sites, contexts and cultures of immersive storytelling production. *This could include issues of representation, social justice, public attitudes, the digital divide, global variations in technology access and usage, and the ethics of using personal data (including unintended consequences). Dear colleagues, Please spread the word on the three post-doctoral research positions in the Datafication of society and SSH research initiative at the University of Helsinki. The Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities invites applications for  3 POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS  to join the Datafication of Society and SSH research initiative. We are looking for applicants for a full-time, fixed-term period of 2.5 years (starting March 2022, or as agreed). The Datafication Initiative brings together researchers from social sciences, humanities, law, education and computer sciences to advance frameworks and understanding of datafication both as 1) a process that shapes social infrastructures and as 2) an evolving context for social sciences and humanities that opens new methodological opportunities, epistemological questions and demands for critical reflection. It has also enhanced capacity to capture and analyse social and political interaction in this environment with increasingly effective computational tools. In the rapidly evolving hybrid online spaces, discursive struggles over dominant articulations of reality, identity, authority and affects circulate in new ways and in multiple modalities. For example, anti-vaxxers question established knowledge hierarchies, while building their own. In doing this, they utilize a variety of new ways, from discussion groups for the like-minded to sharing meme images, the most popular of which come to represent the only-tacitly shared and constantly fluctuating core beliefs of the group. Addressing such questions demands an intensified multidisciplinary effort that is not restricted to specific theoretical approaches. Potential candidates can have a background in any relevant discipline or field of study, ranging (but not limited to) from humanist and social scientific inquiry to computer science, of from poststructuralist discourse theory to anthropology, science studies or study of religion. Successful candidates may have strengths in variety of methodological skills, such as computational text or visual analysis, (digital media) ethnographic approach, network analysis or interpretative data science. 2) Sound data-centric research practices in the humanities and social sciences We are also interested in candidates who have experience in innovative methodological approaches that can contribute to developing sound data-centric research practices in the humanities and social sciences. These candidates are expected to have a background either in developing and applying computational analyses to societal/historic data (computational social science/digital humanities), or a suitable subfield of computer/data science or statistics, such as applied probabilistic modelling, explainable machine learning, or workflow/tool design and development. In the programme, their task will be to develop novel computational and statistical workflows that are able to make sense of the complex data and questions of interest in the above-sketched study of epistemic communities in datafied societies, while ensuring that that research rests on a solid methodological basis. We are searching for ambitious young scholars (PhD less than 5 years ago) to join a community of scholars led by three research programme leaders, whose research groups will work jointly on this initiative and who also coordinate the efforts of the wider UH research community around these themes. In this talk, Dr. Megan Squire will explain how she uses data science to understand complex socio-technical phenomena such as extremist group membership and the spread of dangerous propaganda. Dr. Squire's work understanding online radicalization and measuring extremism on social media has been featured in numerous media publications including the BBC, NPR, The New York Times, and CNN. Dr. Megan Squire is a professor of Computer Science at Elon University (North Carolina, USA). Her main research area is applying data science techniques to understand niche and extremist online communities, particularly radical right-wing groups on social media. Dr. Squire is the author of two books on data cleaning and data mining, and over 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including several Best Paper awards. In 2017, she was named the Elon University Distinguished Scholar. She currently serves as a Senior Fellow for data analytics at the Southern Poverty Law Center, and as a Belfer Fellow for the ADL.
