The new post is part of an ambitious plan to expand our impact in interdisciplinary, Early Childhood research. The post holder will be expected to develop and lead an innovative research project funded by the Joyce Morris legacy, that will address an existing/emerging challenge and make a substantial contribution to theory, methodology or practice in the field of early years literacies. We are constantly bombarded by slogans of AI coming to change our life, whether we like it or not. We are reassured it will be a better life. A better capitalism. A better environment. From smart devices, to home voice assistants, image recognition and translation, AI is offered as the solution to the greatest challenges of this age. This portrayal of AI as a benevolent deity has a crucial effect: it obfuscates the materiality of the infrastructures and devices that are central to its functioning. In her new book Is AI good for the planet? (Polity, 2021). Benedetta Brevini asks us to think about AI in a different, and more material way than most of us have in the past. In all its variety of forms, AI relies on large swathes of land and sea, vast arrays of technology, and greenhouse gas emitting machines and infrastructures that deplete scarce resources in their production, consumption and disposal. AI also relies on data centres that demand excessive amounts of energy, water and finite resources to compute, analyse and categorize. Firmly situated in the critical tradition of political economy of communication, Brevini’s work forces us to reconsider the way we look at AI. For the first time, Is AI good for the planet? brings the climate crisis to the centre of debates around AI developments. Clearly, there are other important concerns about AI: from moral and ethical appeals for caution concerning use of AI in military operations, to loss of human expertise in safeguarding human rights (public health and the judiciary), from algorithmic racial and gender biases to fears that AI will make human labour redundant. However, Brevini argues, if we lose our environment, we lose our planet. So, we must understand and debate the environmental costs of AI. Biography Benedetta Brevini is a journalist, media activist and Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Sydney. Before joining the academy she worked as journalist in Milan, New York and London for CNBC and RAI. She writes on The Guardian’s Comment is Free and contributes to a number of print and web publications including Index of Censorship, OpenDemocracy and the Conversation. She is the author of Public Service Broadcasting Online (2013) and editor of Beyond Wikileaks (2013). Her latest volumes are Carbon Capitalism and Communication: Confronting Climate Crisis (PalgraveMacmillan, 2017), Climate Change and the Media (Peter Lang, 2018), and Amazon: Understanding a Global Communication Giant (Routledge, 2020). The Social Media Collective brings together empirical and critical perspectives to understand the political and cultural dynamics that underpin social media technologies. Our affiliated social science and humanistic researchers include full-time researchers, postdocs, interns, research assistants, and visitors. Our primary purpose is to bring rich contextual analysis to the social, political, and cultural dynamics that underpin social media technologies. Our work spans several disciplines: anthropology, communication, economics, gender and sexuality studies, information, law, media studies, science & technology studies, and sociology. For 2022, this will be a virtual internship. (Karina Rider) RESPONSIBILITIES The ideal candidate may be trained in any number of disciplines (including anthropology, communication, information studies, media studies, sociology, science and technology studies, or a related field), but should have a strong social scientific or humanistic methodological, analytical, and theoretical foundation, be interested in questions related to media or communication technologies and society or culture, and be interested in working in a highly interdisciplinary environment that includes computer scientists, mathematicians, and economists. Interns are also expected to give short presentations on their project, contribute to the SMC blog, attend the weekly lab colloquia, and contribute to the life of the community through weekly lunches with fellow PhD interns and the broader lab community. Open rank, tenure-track or tenured position in Critical Feminist Science and Technology Studies The Program in Gender and Women’s Studies and the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois Chicago invite applications for an open rank, tenure-track or tenured position in Critical Feminist Science and Technology Studies subject to budgetary funding. The position is part of a cluster hire initiative focusing on Social Justice and Human Rights. We are looking for a scholar working at a nexus of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and intersectional feminism. Topics of scholarly inquiry might include but are not limited to: postcolonial critiques of scientific epistemologies and methodologies; decolonial analyses of gender, race, disability and biopolitics; indigenous knowledge production and technologies; digital feminism, new media abolitionist and materialist critiques; racialization of technological innovation especially in the context of reproductive and biometric information; race, sexuality and gaming; and a reimagining of the so-called digital divide through critical studies of informatics. We seek candidates with an earned PhD in Gender and Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, Communication and/or any related field; strong promise of scholarly achievement and teaching success (at the undergraduate and graduate levels); good prospects for external research funding; and demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary scholarship. We have a strong preference for applicants who can be appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or above. The appointment will be interdepartmental, with 50% in Gender and Women’s Studies and 50% in Communication. UIC is a Carnegie Research Extensive University (Research I), the largest institution of higher education in the Chicago area, in the top 50 U.S. universities in federal research funding, and among the top 200 universities in the world.
