Dear Colleagues, We are excited to announce that we are seeking contributions for The Chiptune Studies Reader, an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed and edited volume on chiptune - or 'chipmusic' and 'micromusic' as it is also known - which we intend to publish through Oxford University Press. Rooted in the emergence of video game audio technology, and subsequently re-routed through the subversive musicality of an underground participatory culture, chiptune is a form of electronic music that has blossomed into a global phenomenon over the course of nearly four decades. Today, the umbrella term 'chiptune' subsumes an ever-growing plethora of (sub)genres, practices, and a heterogeneous worldwide following, whose musical output is as creatively playful and diverse as it is distinct by way of its mediation. Chiptune's technologies, timbral palettes, and associated iconography have grown rapidly in their accessibility, playability, and ubiquity, and have become woven into pop-cultural imaginaries far beyond their own humble beginnings in the music of video games' past. When compared to other fields of research into music and multimedia (sub)cultures, however, chiptune has received limited scholarly attention. Typically, this attention focuses on tracing the roots and routes of chiptune's rich techno-cultural history, and the documentation of the kinds of discourses that circulate among its practitioners and their affiliated chipscenes. Our proposed volume sets out to broaden the scope of chiptune scholarship by providing a range of analytical perspectives on the subject. Proposals for chapters that explore chiptune's rich history and its various discourses are still welcome, but we are especially keen for scholarship that explores chiptune in-situ of performance, play, and listening: the in-betweens of chiptune's roots and routes, and the interactivity between humans, technologies and timbres in the process. To that end, we are looking for contributions that explore chiptune's musical performativity, embodiment and immersion, creative processes, and the relationship between chip-musicality and its diverse (sub)cultures. Chapters might address - but are not limited to - the following themes: . (Ludo)musicological analyses of chiptune (particularly with a focus on the factor of play) . Critical analyses of the relationship between chiptune and identity (for instance: themes of belonging, community, embodiment, gender, politics, ethnicity, nationality, and sexuality) . (Auto)ethnographic explorations of chiptune's musical performativity, embodiment and immersion, its chipscenes, and its discourses . Chiptune and accessibility/disability studies . The relationship between chiptune and nostalgia . Historical accounts of chiptune . Chiptune composition techniques . Chiptune, context, (sub)genre, and intertextuality . Chiptune and literacy, education, and pedagogy . The political economy of chiptune, anti-capitalist sentiment, netlabels, festivals, intellectual property, and commodification . How chiptune discourses shape its musical practices and performativity (for instance: themes of 'authenticity' and 'originality') . The networking of (g)local and global chipscenes . Chiptune and dance culture . The life/death/resurrection of online chiptune communities and places of activity . The materiality of chiptune and/or chiptune as material culture (for instance: fetishization of hardware/software, continuities of chipmusic-making objects) . Statements from chiptune practitioners and fans (shorter contributions than articles) The invitation to submit an abstract is open to scholars in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as chiptune practitioners and fans. Chapter abstracts should be no longer than 500 words, excluding bibliography, and should be accompanied by a brief biographical note of no longer than 150 words. View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/d5262392616e/free-online-course-for-students-precobias-s…> Dear Air-L community, As part of the *EU-funded counter-radicalization project* *PRECOBIAS*, we are launching an international student challenge to encourage students to follow our *free online course (MOOC)* on the psychological mechanisms behind online propaganda. This MOOC was developed by researchers from LMU Munich and Ghent University, and we believe that it can be a very interesting pedagogical resource for your students. We would like to invite you to share the student challenge (more info below) or include the MOOC in your own lessons. *Why this student challenge?* Dealing critically with the overload of information on social and online media is one of the most important skills for young adults growing up in this digital age. By educating students of psychology, social work, media or education, PRECOBIAS wants to develop and *strengthen digital resilience* and raise awareness about the *cognitive mechanisms behind online extremist discourse*. *What is the MOOC about?* This course takes a cognitive approach to radicalization and aims to reveal the mental processes that are activated when people are confronted with extremist online content. During a *12-hour program*, which they can start at any moment and follow at their own pace, participants are introduced to key theories surrounding extremism, and gain insights into the principles of information processing and automatic thinking. The course then explores how extremist online content can fuel radicalization processes by triggering cognitive biases, and how helping developing a critical and resilient attitude can play a key role in counter-extremism. The course is *available in 8 languages* (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, Polish and Slovak). *How does the challenge work?* The challenge will be promoted through the PRECOBIAS project Facebook page. We will target students internationally and encourage them to take part in the MOOC, send us a selfie with their MOOC certificate and share the challenge among their Facebook friends. Throughout the month of *November*, we will draw a *weekly winner* at random, and this person will receive a prize worth 250 euros (Sony headphones, Garmin smart watches or theme park tickets). Cyber Partisans: An Insider's Interview on Truth, Terror, and Technology in the Lukashenko Regime Date: November 18 from 3-5 p.m. EST, registration link below. Organized by Gabriella Coleman (Harvard University), Marijeta Bozovic (Yale University), and Benjamin Peters (University of Tulsa) Hacktivism is on the rise, and there's a new, notable crew on the block: the Cyber Partisans. Hailing from Belarus, this collective was chartered in 2020 to fight and expose the Lukashenko regime. First hacking a TV station to stream videos of police brutality, their tactics and interventions have become more diverse, sophisticated, and wide-ranging in 2021. Collaborating with former police officers and hacking into government databases, they've landed and analyzed troves of leaked data that showcase everything from alleged police informants' names to proof that the regime doctored Covid-19 death statistics to downplay the severity of the pandemic. To learn more about the group's operations and organization, along with their history, goals, and successes, please join us on Thursday, November 18, from 3-5 p.m. EST for an online event featuring the Cyber Partisans' spokesperson, Yuliana Shemetovets. She will join us live on video and communicate with several other members of the collective to answer questions from the event organizers and the audience. Building on the momentum of the recent "historical turn" in digital media and internet studies, the aim of the conference is to bring together an interdisciplinary network of scholars to interrogate digital journalism histories and to start a global critical exchange on various approaches to and aspects of historicising digital journalism. As digital journalism has been re-configured by socio-historical contradictions of communication and complexities of its technological innovations, journalism scholarship should continuously strive for enhancing critical exchange to advance studies that intersect with numerous disciplines, theoretical approaches and methodological traditions. Emphasis of the conference is on the plurality of histories instead of one single digital journalism history, acknowledging diachronic as well as synchronic complexities of social relations, political contingencies, cultural traditions and power configurations between journalism and digitisation. Instead of enforcing one great master narrative, the conference aims to offer a space to embrace the co-existence of parallel, sometimes complementing, often conflicting historical investigations and narratives. By aiming to explore the intersections of history, culture, digital technology and journalism, the conference welcomes papers and panels that are grounded on diachronic or synchronic explorations of digital journalism "pasts", while elaborating the relevance of its historical findings for digital journalism "futures". The conference invites theoretical and methodological reflections on historicising digital journalism as well as original single case studies or comparative inquiries into the phenomena from the decades of the long digital revolution of journalism. The conference welcomes papers that examine the digital journalism histories of the global "centers" and we especially encourage inquiries from the "peripheries" of digital journalism development and scholarship. Lecturer/Instructor in Data, Media, and Society The College of Information and Communications<https://sc.edu/study/colleges_schools/cic/> at the University of South Carolina (UofSC)<https://sc.edu/> invites applications for a full-time Lecturer/Instructor in Data, Media, and Society with a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive learning and working environment. A suitable candidate must be able to teach courses online and in-person in programming, database, data analytics, and digital communications courses to undergraduate and graduate students. We value the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds. Job Responsibilities The Candidate will be expected to teach four courses per semester (4 courses in Fall + 4 courses in Spring = 8 courses per year) at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The classes are related to programming, database, and data analytics, and digital communications, such as Fundamentals of Data and Digital Communications and Information Visualization. The start date for the position is August 2022. This is an annual 9-month appointment that may be renewed for two additional years, contingent upon satisfactory job performance and program needs. There will also be opportunities for additional summer teaching. The position is ideal for a candidate interested in a career in academia with teaching as a major focus.
