We’re hiring! University of Houston - Assistant Professor in Journalism/Media Studies About the position: The Jack J. Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in journalism or media studies beginning in Fall of 2022. The candidate will need to have demonstrated a substantive record of research, or the potential thereof. The successful candidate would be expected to teach required and elective undergraduate and graduate courses in journalism and/or media studies as well as possessing professional experience in areas such as journalism, media studies or media industries. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in communication or related field is required. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment. We are especially interested in candidates whose work addresses journalism, communication, or media studies as they pertain to issues of race/ethnicity, disability, LGBTQIA+, class, or other historically underrepresented groups of people, or communities. Candidates may use a range of methodological approaches (qualitative, quantitative, critical, interpretative, computational. or mixed methods) and have research and/or teaching experience in one or more of the following areas that intersect with structures of (in)equities and/or (in)justice: * Digital Culture * Platforms and Publics * Civic Engagement and Technological Infrastructure * Media Industries’ Platforms * Data, AI and Society * Ethnic/Community/Alternative Journalism * Solution Journalism * Media Studies * Cultural Studies * Digital & Social Media * Social Media Analytics The Valenti School of Communication has 17 tenure-line and five instructional faculty. Valenti hosts nearly 290 undergraduate students majoring in journalism and media studies. Communication faculty have strengths in the study of media and politics, digital distribution of content, cultural production and digital activism, health and nutrition claims in advertising, emerging media technologies, alternative media, activism, global digital news innovations, pro-social media campaigns, health attitudes, immigrant and multiethnic community building, social network analysis, intercultural/cross cultural communication, relationship management, intercultural public relations, and global media studies. Faculty also enjoy a steady stream of internal and external grants. Hello. I'm posting on behalf of a colleague (not on the list), who's teaching a new course next semester (cross-listed between information studies and criminal justice). She's looking for some academic(ish) articles that talk about how social movements (U.S. based or worldwide) are using the dark web, particularly with details about their actual use of the dark web. She's looking more for the social movement side of things as opposed to the law enforcement side of things, but I think a wide range of suggestions would likely be helpful. Areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to: Racial bias and unintended racist consequences in data, algorithms, and technologies that enable health care; Point-of-care informatics interventions to reduce healthcare providers’ implicit racial biases and enhance their structural competence; and Community-driven, technology-enabled models of healthcare delivery that address racism as a social determinant of health and empower racialized communities in service/intervention design. We especially welcome scholars who have demonstrated expertise in anti-racist research methods, interdisciplinary scholarship experience, and a commitment to translating research into practice. This position is part of a new faculty cluster focused on “Racial Justice in Healthcare: Informatics and Data-Driven Approaches.” This cluster hire of five faculty (one within each of five units) will focus on using informatics and data science methods to detect, understand, and reduce structural racism within healthcare, and racial healthcare disparities. Faculty will he hired in the following units: (1) the School of Information; (2) College of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy; (3) University of Michigan Medical School, Department of Learning Health Sciences; (4) School of Nursing, Department of Health Behavior and Biological Sciences; and (5) School of Public Health, Department of Health Management and Policy. There will be additional support for cross-school collaborations within the cluster, and the School of Information is also involved in a second cluster hire focused on Anti-Racist Data Justice. Both clusters are part of a university-wide faculty hiring initiative in anti-racism. Over the next three years, the university will hire at least 20 faculty members with scholarly expertise in racial inequality and structural racism. The successful candidate should demonstrate potential for or experience with publication and research funding, for collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives, and for working with students from diverse backgrounds. New paper on online authorship and anonymity!

The paper asks how the features of online platforms influence dynamics of authorship and anonymity, and compares these with the cases of George R R Martin and Elena Ferrante.
