While female candidates are more likely to discuss certain types of issues (like education and healthcare) in their campaigns, some research has shown that as more women are added to a congressional race, less attention is paid to those "women's issues." Given the steady increase in the number of women running for office and the increasing saliency of "women's issues" in American politics over the past few years, are female candidates continuing to market themselves differently than their male competitors in U.S. House races on Twitter? Heather K. Evans is the John Morton Beaty Professor of Political Science at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Her primary research interests are political engagement, competitive congressional elections, social media (Twitter) and the effect of entertainment media on political attitudes. She is the author of "Competitive Elections and Democracy in America: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" (Routledge), which explores both the positive and negative side-effects of increasing competitiveness in congressional elections. Her edited volumes, "Community Engagement Findings Across the Disciplines: Applying Course Concepts to Community Needs" and "Community Engagement Best Practices Across the Disciplines: Applying Course Concepts to Community Needs" were published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2017 and 2018 and examine service learning experiences across the various disciplines. Heather is also the host of "Red, White, and Confused," which airs weekly on WEHC 90.7 FM (also available by podcast). Our next CCDS talk will be from Anders Olof Larsson, Friday Nov 19th, 12 PM. Areas of research and teaching may include, but are not limited to: Racial bias and unintended racist consequences in data, algorithms, and technologies that enable health care; Point-of-care informatics interventions to reduce healthcare providers’ implicit racial biases and enhance their structural competence; and Community-driven, technology-enabled models of healthcare delivery that address racism as a social determinant of health and empower racialized communities in service/intervention design. We especially welcome scholars who have demonstrated expertise in anti-racist research methods, interdisciplinary scholarship experience, and a commitment to translating research into practice. This position is part of a new faculty cluster focused on “Racial Justice in Healthcare: Informatics and Data-Driven Approaches.” This cluster hire of five faculty (one within each of five units) will focus on using informatics and data science methods to detect, understand, and reduce structural racism within healthcare, and racial healthcare disparities. Faculty will he hired in the following units: (1) the School of Information; (2) College of Pharmacy, Department of Clinical Pharmacy; (3) University of Michigan Medical School, Department of Learning Health Sciences; (4) School of Nursing, Department of Health Behavior and Biological Sciences; and (5) School of Public Health, Department of Health Management and Policy. There will be additional support for cross-school collaborations within the cluster, and the School of Information is also involved in a second cluster hire focused on Anti-Racist Data Justice. Both clusters are part of a university-wide faculty hiring initiative in anti-racism. Over the next three years, the university will hire at least 20 faculty members with scholarly expertise in racial inequality and structural racism. The successful candidate should demonstrate potential for or experience with publication and research funding, for collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives, and for working with students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates are expected to have a completed Ph.D. in information science, health or biomedical informatics, computer science, or a related field. The call appears below, and here: https://academic.oup.com/joc/pages/cfp-si-social-media-gbu The team of guest editors - which has a strong AoIR representation - is very keen to encourage submissions from a wide range of conceptual and methodological approaches. (This is a lightly coded way of letting qualitative researchers know to have a go at this one.) *** Journal of Communication Special Issue Social Media: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly The study of social media is pervasive not only within the field of communication (and its many subfields), but across the humanities and social-behavioral sciences. The who, what, where, when, why and how of social media are being approached from a wide range of theoretical angles grounded in diverse epistemologies. The resulting knowledge indicates social media represent the best and the worst of our own humanity. Our still fledgling, but ever evolving social media environments can generate inspiration, enlightenment, and empowerment and – at the same time – be coarse, jagged, unproductive and/or counterproductive spaces that prove difficult to navigate and manage. The title for the 1966 film “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” helps establish the theme for this special issue in that social media can be viewed as a mixture of all three of these characteristics. This film is set in a tense time defined by its hyper-polarization (i.e., American Civil War). Unfortunately, the same can be said for today’s real-world and virtual environments and not only in the US. This special issue is not seeking to resolve whether the social media platforms we have created should be viewed as the good, the bad, or the ugly. Instead, it seeks to bring together a series of insights that will allow scholars, practitioners, and the general public to develop a more nuanced understanding of the mediated communication environments that are becoming further integrated into our day-to-day lives. The guest editors are not defining what is deemed to be the good, the bad or the ugly of social media. Instead, it will be up to the submitting authors to indicate whether their proposals speak to one or a combination of these characteristics as studied in a wide variety of contexts. The special issue is open to all communication subfields, as well as work generated by scholars nested across the humanities and social-behavioral sciences. Proposed works can offer empirical data (qualitative or quantitative; within the latter we invite research that makes causal claims or tests directional hypotheses as well as that representing descriptive social science). We also welcome submissions that are adopting a critical studies, cultural studies, historical, rhetorical, or policy perspective. Submissions can utilize a wide variety of methods, from big data mining to meta- analysis to critical discourse analysis (to name but a few), as applied to a wide variety of datasets (e.g., large scale online behavioral data from social media platforms, existing macro-level data combined with aggregate statistics on social media use, small sample qualitative data from specific users or online communities, among others). Extended abstracts are due by December 1, 2021 (AoE). Submitters should cover the following in a main text maximum of two pages (double spaced, 1”/2.54cm margins, 12-point Times New Roman Font): (1) what communication phenomena will be the focus of the proposed work and how do these phenomena speak to social media being representative of the good, the bad and/or the ugly; (2) what work will be undertaken by the full manuscript deadline (along with any details concerning the feasibility of the endeavor); and, (3) an argument for why this work is important in terms of its theoretical, methodological, and social significance. Tables, figures, appendices and references do not count against the two-page main text limit. Hugh Davies is a research fellow at RMIT in Melbourne. He studies games and digital culture in the Asia Pacific Region. Hugh sits on the board of the Chinese Digital Games and Research Association.

Social good is typically defined as something that provides a benefit to the general public. #AoIR2021 Student Paper Award

We are happy to recognize Nomy Bitman for the #AoIR2021 Virtual Conference Student Paper Award. Her paper, “Rethinking Visibility, Personalization and Representation: Disability Activism in Social Media,” was reviewed amongst the 75 accepted student papers and is regarded the most outstanding paper of those submissions for this year. Specifically, we selected this paper because of its focus on the decision-making thought processes of disability social media activists who have concealable communicative disabilities. Through 31 in-depth interviews with people in this community, Nomy’s paper identified stages of activist performance of disabled identity while further revealing ableist assumptions behind forms of social media activism. We thought Nomy’s paper was methodologically rigorous, comprehensive and engaging with respect to the existing literature, and attentive to the voices of these marginalized communities.
