The candidate’s research activities will advance the aims of the Datafied Living project regarding empirical (data-driven) methods for studying digital tracking and datafication; datafication and work; infrastructures for datafication; or citizen engagement with tracking and data. Datafied Living is a collective and interdisciplinary research project that combines infrastructural and user-centered studies of digital tracking of individuals across personal, work and institutional domains in Denmark. The project combines data-driven studies with qualitative fieldwork to undertake systematic empirical research on the technological underpinnings, ordinary experiences and social consequences of datafied life in the Danish welfare state. By leveraging an empirical knowledge base on the datafication of human existence, the project aims to advance citizen science perspectives and policy-oriented impact regarding the use of personal data across domains of everyday life to the benefit of people and society. As postdoc in Datafied Living you will be expected to, independently and in collaboration with other researchers in the team, contribute to advancing empirical datafication research along one or more of the following lines: * Developing and implementing digital and data-driven methodologies for studying datafication, using e.g. mobile data and data visualizations. * Developing organizational studies of datafication, e.g. studying digital tracking in the context of the workplace. * Developing new approaches to study and enhance citizen’s data literacy, using e.g. participatory methods. You will be expected to publish scientific articles within the context of the project and to participate in the organization of activities and research events within the project. Depending on the pandemic situation, the chosen candidate will have an opportunity for a short research stay with one of the project’s international collaborators. As postdoc at the Department of Communication you will be part of an internationally-oriented interdisciplinary environment focused on advancing theoretical, methodological and empirical research about digital society. As postdoc you will have teaching and supervision obligations, corresponding to 20 % of the appointment in the Department of Communication’s BA or MA programs. The author argues that the men of the manosphere present contradictory thoughts, desires and fantasies about women which include but also go beyond misogyny. They are in a state of dis/inhibition: torn between (un)conscious forces and fantasies which erupt and are defended against. Dis/inhibition shows itself in self-victimization and defensive apathy as well as toxic agency and symbolic power and expresses itself in desire for and hatred of other bodies. The text draws on the psychoanalytic thinkers Klaus Theweleit, Elisabeth Young-Bruehl, Jessica Benjamin and Wilhelm Reich to present detailed analyses of the communities within the so-called manosphere, including incels, Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), alt-right YouTubers and NoFap users. Drawing on wider discussions about the status of sexuality in contemporary neoliberal technoculture since the sexual revolution of the late 1960s, it illuminates how sexuality, racism and images of the white male body shape the fantasies and affects of many men on the internet and beyond. While female candidates are more likely to discuss certain types of issues (like education and healthcare) in their campaigns, some research has shown that as more women are added to a congressional race, less attention is paid to those "women's issues." Given the steady increase in the number of women running for office and the increasing saliency of "women's issues" in American politics over the past few years, are female candidates continuing to market themselves differently than their male competitors in U.S. House races on Twitter? Heather K. Evans is the John Morton Beaty Professor of Political Science at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Her primary research interests are political engagement, competitive congressional elections, social media (Twitter) and the effect of entertainment media on political attitudes. She is the author of "Competitive Elections and Democracy in America: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" (Routledge), which explores both the positive and negative side-effects of increasing competitiveness in congressional elections. Her edited volumes, "Community Engagement Findings Across the Disciplines: Applying Course Concepts to Community Needs" and "Community Engagement Best Practices Across the Disciplines: Applying Course Concepts to Community Needs" were published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2017 and 2018 and examine service learning experiences across the various disciplines. With apologies for crossposting Dear Colleagues, We are excited to announce that we are seeking contributions for The Chiptune Studies Reader, an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed and edited volume on chiptune - or 'chipmusic' and 'micromusic' as it is also known - which we intend to publish through Oxford University Press. Rooted in the emergence of video game audio technology, and subsequently re-routed through the subversive musicality of an underground participatory culture, chiptune is a form of electronic music that has blossomed into a global phenomenon over the course of nearly four decades. Today, the umbrella term 'chiptune' subsumes an ever-growing plethora of (sub)genres, practices, and a heterogeneous worldwide following, whose musical output is as creatively playful and diverse as it is distinct by way of its mediation. Chiptune's technologies, timbral palettes, and associated iconography have grown rapidly in their accessibility, playability, and ubiquity, and have become woven into pop-cultural imaginaries far beyond their own humble beginnings in the music of video games' past. When compared to other fields of research into music and multimedia (sub)cultures, however, chiptune has received limited scholarly attention. Typically, this attention focuses on tracing the roots and routes of chiptune's rich techno-cultural history, and the documentation of the kinds of discourses that circulate among its practitioners and their affiliated chipscenes. Our proposed volume sets out to broaden the scope of chiptune scholarship by providing a range of analytical perspectives on the subject. Proposals for chapters that explore chiptune's rich history and its various discourses are still welcome, but we are especially keen for scholarship that explores chiptune in-situ of performance, play, and listening: the in-betweens of chiptune's roots and routes, and the interactivity between humans, technologies and timbres in the process. To that end, we are looking for contributions that explore chiptune's musical performativity, embodiment and immersion, creative processes, and the relationship between chip-musicality and its diverse (sub)cultures. Chapters might address - but are not limited to - the following themes: . (Ludo)musicological analyses of chiptune (particularly with a focus on the factor of play) . Critical analyses of the relationship between chiptune and identity (for instance: themes of belonging, community, embodiment, gender, politics, ethnicity, nationality, and sexuality) . (Auto)ethnographic explorations of chiptune's musical performativity, embodiment and immersion, its chipscenes, and its discourses . Chiptune and accessibility/disability studies . The relationship between chiptune and nostalgia . Historical accounts of chiptune . Chiptune composition techniques . Chiptune, context, (sub)genre, and intertextuality . Chiptune and literacy, education, and pedagogy . The political economy of chiptune, anti-capitalist sentiment, netlabels, intellectual property, and commodification . How chiptune discourses shape its musical practices and performativity (for instance: themes of 'authenticity' and 'originality') . The networking of (g)local and global chipscenes . Chiptune and dance culture . The life/death/resurrection of online chiptune communities and places of activity . The materiality of chiptune and/or chiptune as material culture (for instance: fetishization of hardware/software, continuities of chipmusic-making objects) . Statements from chiptune practitioners and fans (shorter contributions than articles) The invitation to submit an abstract is open to scholars in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, as well as chiptune practitioners and fans. Dear colleagues, We are looking for three researchers in the Global South to join our research project, ‘Digital Self-Determination for the South? Legitimacy in the Regional Internet Registries,’ funded by the Swedish Research Council. The project is based at the University of Gothenburg and led by Dr. Hortense Jongen (University of Gothenburg/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), with co-researcher Prof. Jan Aart Scholte (University of Gothenburg/Leiden University). This three-year project investigates legitimacy and legitimation in the three Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) for the Global South. These bodies – the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), the Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), and the Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC) – perform a crucial role in digital development, by overseeing the distribution of Internet numbers (IP addresses) and handling associated questions about accessible technology, content control, data protection, and cybersecurity. This project investigates how participants in these regional multistakeholder governance bodies evaluate them, mainly using mixed-methods interviews. We invite applications for three researchers to work as part-time consultants on this project. One based in Africa will focus on AFRINIC. A second based in Asia-Pacific will focus on APNIC. A third based in Latin America-Caribbean will focus on LACNIC. Job tasks include: * To help consolidate the final research design of the study. * To help design and implement the mixed-methods survey questionnaire. * To conduct survey interviews online (via Microsoft Teams/Skype/Zoom etc.) and in person at conferences of the RIRs. * To contribute to analysing the interview data. * To co-author academic publications and policy papers. Essential qualifications for the job include: * You hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field. We particularly encourage PhD candidates and other early-career academic researchers to apply. * You have a good command of English. The researcher working on AFRINIC must also have a good command of French. The researcher working on LACNIC must also have a good command of Spanish (and ideally Portuguese as well). * You are normally resident in the region of the RIR that you will be working on, though you might be temporarily living overseas, say, for studies. Applicants from low-income and lower-middle-income countries are especially welcome. * You are able to travel internationally to two conferences held by the RIRs in order to conduct interviews (in 2022 and/or 2023). Additional desirable qualifications for the job include: * You have experience researching Internet governance and knowledge of the RIRs. * You have experience with academic field research, ideally also survey methods. * You have strong oral and written communication skills. * You are a team player with enthusiasm to work on an international research team. The positions will be held part-time from 1st February 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 31st August 2024. Remuneration is by consultancy fee of around €25,000, paid in instalments.
