With the lab, I will continue my research agenda developed at the HIIG, and built a team to do research and teaching at the intersection of governance, technology and communication in close collaboration with international partners and continue to collaborate closely with the HIIG and the global network of centres. A portion of the position description from the job posting is copied below: "The University of Oregon's School of Journalism and Communication seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a research and teaching emphasis in the area of Digital Platforms and Ethics. We seek to hire a colleague who will conduct research on and teach ethics in the context of mass media, communication, and digital media technologies-including internet platforms, software, algorithms, and technical infrastructure. Apps, algorithms, and digital platforms dominate much of our economy, politics, culture, and everyday lives, with consequences for communication, mass media, democracy, and public life. For example, the ascendancy of Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Microsoft requires assessment of issues ranging from bias built into software to monopolization of online markets and even their role in the rise and spread of misinformation around COVID-19, climate change, and recent elections. The hire would bring the following key contributions to our faculty: 1) Expertise in theories and concepts pertinent to media ethics generally and digital media ethics specifically, including issues of free speech, privacy, surveillance, transparency, content moderation, platform power, trust, misinformation, and/or human rights; 2) A related specialty, such as the study of algorithms, software, platforms and infrastructures, and/or critical approaches to programming; and 3) A capacity to teach our required Media Ethics course, other core courses (such as Media and Society and courses within our four undergraduate and graduate sequences as related to their area(s) of expertise), as well as develop innovative courses across the SOJC. This person must have a Ph.D. in communication, media studies, journalism, information science/studies, philosophy, or another related field in hand by time of appointment; demonstrated potential for teaching excellence; ability to execute independent and/or collaborative research that advances theory and bridges knowledge and practice; and a record or promise of scholarly accomplishment that includes publication of peer-reviewed articles and publication in academic journals in communication, media studies, journalism, information studies, surveillance studies, and/or related fields. This faculty hire will join our Media Studies area, which focuses on three key areas: Media Technologies and Public Life, Media Structures and Regulation, and Culture and Power in the Media. Further, they should contribute to making the SOJC a destination for graduate and undergraduate students to engage with and understand the ethical, social, and cultural implications of digital technologies. This hire would ideally strengthen SOJC's ties to other units on campus, including existing collaborations with CAS (e.g., the annual Data|Media|Digital Graduate Symposium), the campus-wide New Media and Culture Certificate program for graduate students, the ethics minor in philosophy, and UO's Data Sciences Initiative, through a practical orientation to ethical issues in society. It will introduce strategies and techniques to create usable, meaningful, and empowering designs to engage cultural differences in a globalized world at a divisive time. Conference Notions of Jihad Reconsidered

Dear colleagues, I am delighted to share the program of the 2021 conference Notions of Jihad Reconsidered: Perspectives on Media, Materiality, and Political Violence [1] (Online/Mainz/Mannheim 08 - 10 October 2021). The conference is organized by the Junior Research Group _Jihadism on the Internet_ [2]_: Images and Videos, their Appropriation and Dissemination_ at the Department of Anthropology and African Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Topic The symposium explores how different notions of jihad and political violence have entered and been shaped by discursive formations in academia, media, and the arts. It takes the aesthetic dimensions of images and sounds that have emerged over the last 20 years in the engagement with 9/11 and its aftermath as a starting point to rethink the various notions of jihad and its relation to political violence. Bringing together international scholars, artists, and curators, the symposium critically examines the ways in which the concept of jihad has been studied, covered, and resisted by different actors. It discusses how notions of jihad are conditioned by and manifest in practices of knowledge production of a wide range of social actors around the world. The symposium includes a joint visit of the special exhibition MINDBOMBS and an Artist Talk at the Kunsthalle Mannheim, a keynote lecture as well as four thematic panels. During the four thematic panels, renowned scholars and artists explore the visual and sonic aesthetics that have helped manifest perceptions of jihad. They critically reflect on the practices of knowledge production in different social spheres that have conditioned notions of Jihad and political violence, debating the canonization and archiving of mediations and imaginations of Jihad, as well as ethnographic case studies that show how notions, media, and materialities of Jihad are entangled with local and global structures of power. The Manifesto has been signed by around 1,000 endorsers, including Jürgen Habermas, Noam Chomsky, International Federation of Journalists, European Federation of Journalists, International Association for Media and Communication Research, European Communication Research and Education Association. It can be signed at http://bit.ly/signPSManifesto The Internet and the media landscape are broken. The dominant commercial Internet platforms endanger democracy. They have created a communications landscape overwhelmed by surveillance, advertising, fake news, hate speech, conspiracy theories, and algorithmic politics. Commercial Internet platforms have harmed citizens, users, everyday life, and society. Democracy and digital democracy require Public Service Media. A democracy-enhancing Internet requires Public Service Media becoming Public Service Internet platforms – an Internet of the public, by the public, and for the public; an Internet that advances instead of threatens democracy and the public sphere. The Public Service Internet is based on Internet platforms operated by a variety of Public Service Media, taking the public service remit into the digital age. The Public Service Internet provides opportunities for public debate, participation, and the advancement of social cohesion.
