*** First Call for Contributions *** ACM International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good (GoodIT 2022) 7–9 September, 2022, 5* St. Raphael Resort & Marina, Limassol, Cyprus https://cyprusconferences.org/goodit2022/ Scope The ACM GoodIT conference seeks papers describing significant research contributions related to the application of information technologies (IT) to social good. Social good is typically defined as something that provides a benefit to the general public. In this context, clean air and water, Internet connection, education, and healthcare are all good examples of social goods. However, new media innovations and the explosion of online communities have added new meaning to the term. Social good is now about global citizens uniting to unlock the potential of individuals, technology, and collaboration to create a positive societal impact. GoodIT solicits papers that address important research challenges related to, but not limited to: • Citizen science • Civic intelligence • Decentralized approaches to IT • Digital solutions for Cultural Heritage • Environmental monitoring • Ethical computing • Frugal solutions for IT • Game, entertainment, and multimedia applications • Health and social care • IT for automotive • IT for development • IT for education • IT for smart living • Privacy, trust and ethical issues in ICT solutions • Smart governance and e-administration • Social informatics • Socially responsible IT solutions • Sustainable cities and transportation • Sustainable IT • Technology addressing the digital divide Main Track Paper Submission The papers should not exceed six (6) pages (US letter size) double-column, including figures, tables, and references in standard ACM format (https://cyprusconferences.org/goodit2022/index.php/authors/) They must be original works and must not have been previously published. At least one of the authors of all accepted papers must register and present the work at the conference; otherwise, the paper will not be published in the proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings published in the ACM Digital Library. Special journal issues will be organised where the best accepted papers will be invited to submit extended versions. Separate call-for-papers will be announced for the special tracks (more information will be available on the conference web site). Work-in-Progress and PhD Track Inside ACM GoodIT, the Work-in-Progress and PhD Track provides an opportunity to showcase interesting new work that is still at an early stage. We encourage practitioners and researchers to submit to the Work-in-Progress venue as it provides a unique opportunity for sharing valuable ideas, eliciting feedback on early-stage work, and fostering discussions and collaborations among colleagues. Moreover, this track provides a platform for PhD students to present and receive feedback on their ongoing research. Students at different stages of their research will have the opportunity to present and discuss their research questions, goals, methods and results. This is an opportunity to obtain guidance on various aspects of their research from established researchers and other PhD students working in research areas related to technologies for social good. #AoIR2021 Student Paper Award

We are happy to recognize Nomy Bitman for the #AoIR2021 Virtual Conference Student Paper Award. Her paper, “Rethinking Visibility, Personalization and Representation: Disability Activism in Social Media,” was reviewed amongst the 75 accepted student papers and is regarded the most outstanding paper of those submissions for this year. Specifically, we selected this paper because of its focus on the decision-making thought processes of disability social media activists who have concealable communicative disabilities. Through 31 in-depth interviews with people in this community, Nomy’s paper identified stages of activist performance of disabled identity while further revealing ableist assumptions behind forms of social media activism. We thought Nomy’s paper was methodologically rigorous, comprehensive and engaging with respect to the existing literature, and attentive to the voices of these marginalized communities. Call for Papers Lippmann’s ‘Public Opinion’ at 100: The yesterday and tomorrow of post-truth, disinformation and fake news Guest Editor: Frank Durham (The University of Iowa) Disillusioned with his experience as propagandist for the Wilson government during the First World War, the then journalist Walter Lippmann shut himself in his Summer cottage to write a book about the limits of popular self-government in contemporary complex societies. Given that journalism was unable to provide an accurate and comprehensive picture of events to a mostly inattentive audience, it was time to acknowledge that a group of insiders should pre-cook the choices for the outsiders at large. Published in 1922, Public Opinion would become an instant success. The ‘manufacture of consent’ enabled by propaganda and the mass media, the ‘stereotypes’ we use as cognitive short-cuts to make decisions about politics, the ‘pseudo-environment’ that we build with the ‘pictures in our heads’, coming from the vicarious experience of foreign events provided by the news media… These ideas espoused by Lippmann in the book served to remind us that we live in Plato’s cave, doomed to passively stare at the shadows that we take for reality, and therefore incapable of governing ourselves as fully-competent citizens. Historian Ronald Steel, the definitive biographer of Lippmann, noted that the legendary journalist evolved from a mechanic concern (how to report events objectively, de-contaminated of bias and prejudice) to an organic conundrum: What if people do not want to know the truth? This evolution, traceable from Liberty and the News (1920) to The Phantom Public (1925), the prequel and sequel, respectively, of Public Opinion, still puzzles us today: What if all the fact-checking is useless? What if democracy cannot escape from the limits of confirmation bias and selective exposure? As Steel recalls, Lippmann was well ahead of his time in advancing some of the most recent findings in political psychology: facts won’t change our minds. The International Journal of Media & Cultural Politics would like to invite submissions for a special issue celebrating the centennial of the publication of Lippmann’s landmark book, Public Opinion. The topics likely to be covered will include: • The reception and influence of Public Opinion, both in the USA and internationally. • Current research addressing Lippmann’s original concerns: distorted reporting and the distorted perception of public affairs. • The connection of Lippmann’s early insights with today’s phenomena of affective polarization, self-exposure, echo-chambers and post-truth politics. • Accuracy in reporting, fact-checking inside and outside news organizations. • Pitfalls in the coverage of international crises, echoing Lippmann’s and Mertz’s essay on the reporting of the Russian Revolution by the New York Times in A test of the news (1920). • The professionalization of journalism: education, trade associations and ethical codes. • The professional politician in the age of populism. • The role of experts in government: scientific management, technocracy and intelligence offices. Submissions will be considered in a two-step fashion: first, interested authors should submit an abstract by December 10, 2021. Those authors whose abstracts are deemed appropriate for the special issue will be notified by the end of January 2022 and will be invited to submit a full paper by July 31, 2022. Christian Fuchs takes this anniversary as an occasion to outline some foundations of an empirically grounded critical theory of the public sphere in 21st-century society. He will discuss theoretical foundations and present the results of empirical research on the digital public sphere. He will give special attention to digital capitalism, COVID-19, public service media, and the Internet as aspects of the 21st-century transformation of the public sphere. The talk will give particular attention to the power of the digital giants such as Google and Facebook, digital advertising, influencer capitalism, labor in the COVID-19 pandemic, digital authoritarianism and digital fascism, the spread of “fake news” and anti-vaccination conspiracy theories in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This special issue of the journal seeks contributions from students at master's and doctoral level as well as from early career academics, who prioritise an interdisciplinary perspective in their research projects. With the desire to make space for reflections on plurilingual diversity and the challenges arising therefrom for translation, this issue is intended to constitute a collection of articles in which knowledge and ideas are shared for the purpose of improving practices of reading, writing, teaching, and translating. Our hope is to incorporate thought-provoking contributions addressing the possible effects of plurality in linguistic, conceptual, and cultural translation. Suggested areas of focus might include, but not be limited to, the following aspects: * Choices and strategies to translate plurilingual texts * Philosophical and theoretical approaches for translating the effects of more than two languages * Plurilingual writers, thinkers, and translators, their histories and identities * Teaching bilingual texts in a plurilingual classroom * Teaching plurilingual text in a bilingual classroom * Translating one concept into multiple languages To be considered as a contributor for this issue, please submit a 300-word abstract, accompanied by your name and institutional affiliation via email to Melissa Pawelski, melissa.pawelski(a)warwick.ac.uk<mailto:melissa.pawelski@warwick.ac.uk> by Monday 1st November 2021.
