Dear colleagues, The TikTok Cultures Research Network is pleased to announce a virtual event TikTok Methodologies <http://tiktokcultures.com/tiktok-methodologies> on 19 July 2021 organized by founding members Associate Professor Crystal Abidin, Professor Patrik Wikström, and Dr D. Bondy Valdovinos Kaye. The field of digital media research is rapidly expanding to include innovative and exciting TikTok research. As one of the most widely used digital short video platforms around the world, TikTok is a key social arena to study global youth culture, creativity, professionalization, and activism. This event is a critical forum for discussion on TikTok research frameworks and methodologies from emerging voices in the field. This two-hour virtual event will take place via Zoom on 19 July 2021 at 0900-1100 (GMT+8) and will feature two panel discussions with a diverse array of TikTok researchers. Call for Applications Two Associate Editors Officially Assuming Duties July 21 2021; Overseeing 2021-2024 Volumes The Journal of Communication Technology in association with the Communication Technology division of AEJMC is seeking applications for Associate Editors. The appointed Associate Editors will begin processing manuscripts Summer 2021, officially assuming duties July 21 202 and overseeing volumes for 2021-2024. Description of the Journal The Journal of Communication Technology is the official journal of the Communication Technology division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. We are a fast-growing journal seeking to expand our editorial staff as our number of monthly submissions continue to skyrocket. We are on track to publish four issues this year, the third of which will come out sometime in late July or early August. The expressed aim of this journal is to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Since communication technologies themselves have now come to fulfill a central, social role in virtually all forms of mediated communication, JoCTEC welcomes scholarship from a broad area of inquiry provided that the focus pertains to communication technologies. This includes but is not limited to studies of social media, advertising, science, networks, health, politics, history, policy, public relations, management, economics, ethics, minorities, and visual communication. Requirements and Responsibilities The Associate Editors must be a member or become a member of AEJMC Communication Technology division and must maintain membership in the division throughout the editorial term. Looking for a fully funded PhD

Hi everyone, I am a writer from Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. I have an eclectic interest in subjects such as the intersections of marginalised communities, gender studies, development studies, mythology, neuroscience, equity, redesigning work, vulnerability, emotions, cultural and biological evolution and its history, and ethical implications of AI. I am a journalist. Interviewing people, connecting with them and accurately documenting their life is my strongest skill. Historical research is my second. One transferable skill is the ability to sit with experts and understand their work enough to explain it to laypeople. The ability to explain a complex topic simply and accurately for mass public consumption is a skill I can contribute to any research team. I have an MSc in Gender and Development Studies and a BA in Literatures in English. My MSc research was an investigation into queer identities in literature. My BA research paper was on Caribbean Folklore. I would like to do a PhD to have five years to read, write to produce books. I am curious about many topics and working in any disciple or intersectional team can allow me the time and information to wrangle with questions that have been bothering me for years such as: how to address rage online? Is there a necessity of battle in discourse? How to restructure the world into an equitable space where many people's needs are met? How to overcome the negativity bias in media, particularly social media which is a designed rage machine? And explore the body both scientifically and socially. I religiously listen to Alan Watts every morning, Brene Brown and Helen Fisher are my two favourite living scholars and I am curious about Daniel Dennett's work. Humankind by Rutger Bregman and Factfulness by Hans Rosling, Ola Rossling and Anna Rosling Rönnlund are two books I've used to help form my world opinion. I'm very excited to share this CFP for the 34th issue of inVisible Culture focused on memes and memetics. iVC is a peer-reviewed, grad-student run, interdisciplinary journal housed at the University of Rochester. For our 34th issue, Invisible Culture seeks scholarly articles and creative works that approach internet memes as aesthetic, cultural, and political objects of study. Memes have been discussed largely in their communicative and participatory capacities, particularly in the fields of communications, political science, and other social sciences. There are fewer examples of humanistic work approaching memes and memetics as world-building practices and as cultural objects that foreground meaningful sense-making. The last major journal issue devoted to the topic was a 2014 special issue of The Journal of Visual Culture.1<https://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-issue-34-invisible-memes-for-cultural-tee…> Memes have since moved from diversion to discourse, from formally simplistic to kaleidoscopically complex, from niche to mainstream. Memes draw endlessly from the ever-growing dustbin of popular visual culture, returning modified images that are, in turn, instantly modifiable. Memes are as much, if not more, a part of most people’s daily cultural exposure as television, film, or radio. Savvy creators of “legacy” media anticipate memification (one need only think of Lil Nas X sliding down the stripper pole to Hell) and marketing professionals “in on the joke” leverage the authorless form for free advertising. The bulk of anglophone meme research since 2015 has focused on the role of memes in the spread of extremist ideologies as a means of “[weaponizing] irony to attract and radicalize potential supporters, challenge progressive ideologies and institutions, redpill normies, and create a toxic counterpublic.”2<https://ivc.lib.rochester.edu/cfp-issue-34-invisible-memes-for-cultural-tee…> This attention is both necessary and appropriate. However, we hope to address memetics more broadly and to emphasize areas that haven’t received the same attention. Memes are hardly unique to any one age group, race, class, or indeed any region of the world; nor are they exclusively in the domain of humor. Memes spread and develop online and can never be fully untethered from the exigencies of platform, algorithm, location, and law. Yet vernacular meme cultures are as varied as the panoply of human experience. Memes move across and within ethnic and national identifications, expressions of gender and sexuality, political ideology, and language family. In this issue we seek work that speaks to that capacious view of memes, from part to elusive whole; whether focusing on the deeply contextual particularities of a specific meme or community, the subversive or revolutionary potential of particular imagery, discussing the practice of meme artists or reckoning with memetics as a worldwide phenomenon. We hope for submissions of scholarly and creative work across disciplines, methodologies, communities, and positionalities. Therefore, the “trails” users leave behind while using OSNEM can be mined, via big data analytics and AI, to characterize individual and social human behaviours at an unprecedented scale. Moreover, the speed at which events can be detected via OSNEM data analysis makes OSNEM a prime way to monitor the evolution of human behaviours and nowcast their development and consequences in both the physical and virtual worlds. For example, OSNEM can be used to shed light, through big data analysis, on the diffusion of COVID-19 in the real world. Robertson (The Open University, UK) & Patrick Burkart (Texas A&M University, USA) June 21, 2021 The aim of this special issue is to explore how a multiplicity of competing epistemologies interact and compete in the "post-Truth" marketplace of ideas in online popular communication. We invite contributions to a special issue on the intersections of popular communication, disinformation, and misinformation. We are especially interested in how popular communication can challenge and even upend traditional and inherited belief systems and knowledge regimes in religion, politics, fandom, and other institutions. As traditional ideologies and other thought regimes collapse and new ones arise, recent scholarship has examined the contributions of digitalization and datafication of popular communication that contest older communitarian worldviews (e.g. Fuller, 2020). The internet has augmented collective understandings of the world but also undermined a broader sense of belonging, while enabling a new scope of contestation over "epistemic capital" (Robertson, 2016, 2021). In popular communication, especially, the social construction of meaning and worldviews is more manipulable than ever through disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda. We welcome submissions exploring epistemic contestations through conceptual, methodological, and empirical approaches. Possible topic areas include (but are not limited to): * conspiracy theories * terrorism * fandom * science communication * propaganda * identity politics * nationalism * affect * new religions / "cults" * New Atheism * the "Intellectual Dark Web" The special issue will invite individual submissions on the basis of approved abstracts. These challenges are driven by the limited stability of social, political and economical structures. These constraints can make it hard to take part in dominant innovation patterns in digital transformation seen in more developed regions. However, the global south also brings opportunities for innovation including digital transformation for local communities and organisations. A potential problem is that stereotypes of people in these regions fail to understand their experiences, life perspectives and contexts. Therefore, there is a need to document new information technology research and design thinking methods for creating alternative innovation patterns in the digital and knowledge-based economies that include people, communities and organisations in the global south. Dissemination of local knowledge of digital innovations and experiences in implementing them will benefit communities and organisations to engage in sustainable digital transformation initiatives. This publication aims to: Explore accounts of innovative design practices of digital development and applications in the global south; Produce and share knowledge concerning digital transformation and its implications in human development and society; Review the development of innovative practices for digital transformation in the digital and knowledge-based economies in the global south.
